Goodman vs. Rheem 4T AH/HP - Same installer

I'm about to order a new 4T HP + AH. The price is about the same and both AH's have an acceptable footprint. The distributers are also the same as is the INSTALLER. (ie yours truly).

Short of flipping a coin are there any other considerations in making a decision? (ie coil quality control, cabinets, etc)

I understand Goodman is pretty good these days but also I don't see too many people bad mouth Rheem either.

Go with the Rheem, Goodman still has a long way to go quality wise. Rheem is a proven performer. Check Consumer Reports, always ranked in top two for customer satisaction, or you can ask anyone who repairs them.Just my humble opinion.

Rheem no question. RPNE 13 SEER has Copeland scroll, TXV metering device, charge compensator, high & low pressure switches, demand defrost... Impressive unit. If Goodman were $600 less, then it would be up to the budget but not for the same buck.

Another note for those who are worried. Get 4 bids on the same ton unit and hopefully references. Call your local air condition parts supplier and ask for a couple of installers names. Or call a couple of builders and they may tell you who NOT to use. Beware of quid pro quo deals among the business. Make sure all parts are listed with labor and tax. If going from a R22 unit to a 410a unit ask if the copper from the outside unit to the attic unit will be re-used or replaced. If reused make double dog sure the flush it correctly. Beware of contractors that send trainees to do the job. Respectfully insist on them being there to supervise the entire operation. Educate yourself and make sure you are off that day. Ask questions politely if a red light appears in your mind. Lastly treat installers with respect and maybe throw in a pizza for being a pain!

Thanks for the response fellas, My #2 Proposal says only 10 yr manufacs warranty (estimator says most warranties across the board are pretty equal these days). The proposal also states there is a 5 yr warranty on parts and labor - I assume this is the installers own warranty on the work. I'll ask the estimator("Nate") about the other Rheem series that you all recommend - I did explain to him that in my current circumstances I was trying to keep the price down - may explain the plain jane system. My #1 proposal came back with the following: "...Mike the model number of the heat pumps I gave you are Payne heat pump PH14NA030T00 Payne air handler PF14NA03000G this also has 10 year on compressor and coils 5 on parts the second system was carrier heat pump 25HNA624A003 carrier air handler FE4ANF002T00 this is 10 year all around heat pump two stage conpressor qualify $1500.00 plus $1,100 mail in rebate I talked to my sales rep from carrier and for the first option we can doit for $5,000.00 even second option we can doit $7,500.00 and you will get you rebate and tax credit My prices for trane are the same as carrier and Goodman I do not do much businnes with them there for payne are better prices..." My only thing about the tax credit is that I may not get any value out of it given my current lack of income. The lack of income also speaks to trying to keep the up-front cost down. edward I will not say whether it will fit or not. I will give you the measurements. On the Rheem, you were provided information in your previous post from BaldLoonie who isa Rheem expert. That was air handler RHBL-FR36T. measurements given were 21D x 24W x 36H. AHRI number below. 3799142 Active Systems RHEEM 14AJM SERIES RHEEM MANUFACTURING COMPANY 14AJM30 RHBL-FR36T 28800 13.00 16.00 on the Trane,I believe you meant the XR15 model-you need to recheck the condenser mdl number. On the 4TEE3F40B, the measurements are 21D x 26W x 52H. AHRI matching number below. 3430037 Active Systems XR15 TRANE 4TTR5030E1 4TEE3F40B1 29400 13.00 16.00 these are AC systems only, not HP systems. I assume you might need a small heat strip on those rare times for heat. IMO

In my opinion, a new system is not worth a penny no matter what brand if you have duct issues. I put more into the checking ducts making sure they look good and marking down what I think can be improved if anything. Brand of equipment, manual j, whatever you name it, Checking the duct in my opinion is top priority if it is accessible. I went into 3 attics today. 2 had small issues and 1 was ok. The small issues will be fixed and the cost is minimal when the new system goes in if they choose us. I will say the Trane XR15 is a more close comparison to a goodman 16 which the XR15 cost less than the XL15i. You may want to ask about the XR15 if you are considering comparing a trane model that is a more budgeted A/C It is my opinion the most important part of buying an air conditioning system is the contractor who installs it. With that, a Professional who believes in what they sell will more than likely install it better than a company who will sell you anything that you want. I am not a big fan of companies that sell many different brands.

Yeah the Rheem i definitely the better deal. Thats a quality unit, I didnt know it had that many features. I've never had a Rheem unit give major problems.

This past summer, i just replaced a Rheem that was from 1968 and was still running. They are a great middle of the road unit. I have seen alot of brand new Goodman units pop run capacitors or start burning wires to the compressors. The paint seems to chip off in large chunks and they always seem to have a vibration problem.

Get the Rheem/Ruud/Weatherking.

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered a Rheem 4T RPNE/RHLA R-22 system.

My goals were to get a good quality basic system that's been proven to be a good performer in the field. I didn't want fancy filters, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, variable speed compressors or any other worthless gimicks.

I hope this system meets my goals.

Just order a Rheem 3.5Ton unit OIl burner with Straight A/C for same reasosns you had. Installer tells me that Variable Speed fan will be on this unit. Like you I wanted something proven ; not experimental and I am the beta tester for the next 10 years... homey don't play that.

I assume you know but I will still mention that Rheem and Ruud are identical units in all respects. Just different letters on the units. I think also, that different contractors rep for each, so it might expand your search.

Just so that you don't get blindsighted, all new brands have capacitor problems including Rheem, TRANE, Carrier, Goodman, and all others. In my climate, it is a given that the newer caps will fail.

I will never recommend a Rudd nor a Rheem. I have two repairs to do on two Rheems. Both are RRKA/RRMA series. Each approximately 10 years old. The heat exchanger and control board on one. It took the longest time to get the old heat exchanger out.

And, the second needs a coil among other things. The distributor/parts house have to order the coil and it will take two weeks for delivery.

I looked at another failed system on Friday. It was a 13 year old Rheem, model RPGB. This one will be replaced.

I will chose a Goodman 9 times out of 10 over any other brand. Goodman's parts are readily available. They are easy to work on. And, the warranty is excellent.

For the record, my least favorite is Lennox.
