Another Gift Idea

Like Merrygardener and Polly (and many others here,from the sounds of it!)I got very tired of the money wasted on kids' birthday gifts. Mine had more than they needed and when invited to their friend's birthday parties, I knew that at least half the gifts would end up stuffed in a closet, no longer used after the first week or so.

One day, after spotting some cute plastic popcorn cups in Target's dollar section, I hit on a gift idea that I've been using with great success ever since. I add yellow crinkle confetti to one of these popcorn containers, add a gift pass/certificate for 2 to our local movie theater for the movie of their choice and throw in a couple candy bars and a bag of microwave popcorn. This way, they can take their parent or a friend, depending on the age, to a movie they want to see, at their convenience. I've also added a dvd instead of movie passes.

BTW, this gift is great for teens and adults, too!

I love that I haven't wasted my money and parents love the very usable gift. Afterwards, most parents recycle the plastic popcorn container, either using it to hold popcorn or passing it along as a movie gift to someone else.

That's a great idea! I always buy movie tickets at Costco, they're only about $15 for two, and throw those in the gifts I give my adult kids & their SOs. They love it and use them to go to those movies they wouldn't normally pay to see. Most recently my eldest DD and her BF went to see Toy Story 3 (they're 27 years old!) because I'd given him some tix.

Now I'll borrow your idea and spank up the gift a little!

I won just such a gift at a recent baby shower. It was a gift certificate for Blockbuster instead of movie tickets but the microwave popcorn and candy bars were included.

If he's into Veggie gardening, I would go for a subscription to Organic Gardening or maybe a copy of the Old Farmer's Almanac. Another idea would be to hit the sale at Gardeners Supply Company and get him some things for his Veggie garden--red plastic mulch for the tomatoes, bamboo to build a trellis for beans, cages, stakes, or various other garden implements and tools. LOL, Melati--I WISH!!! We'll probably have to make that direction a whole *nuther plan*--maybe next-year's anniversary! Dave--thank you so much, too!! I'm definitely going to have to have 'a plan'!! Now, tell me this *you guys* with the extensive collections you already have--what in the world do I bring you, that you DO NOT ALREADY HAVE??? I'm getting nervous!!! My 'picken's are such 'small potatoes' compared with anyone you've suggested visiting, including yourselves!! LOL btw--do NOT fear--I would NEVER ask you for a piece of your hosta! I only tease on the forum, with such boldness, (and with those I've already 'traded' with) but in 'real life' I'd be horrified to do that!! Just not the way I wuz brought up--southern roots, ya know--well, maybe you don't but trust me--they're still in 'there'!!! :o) And, if I go over a certain one you have--I AM NOT hinting for you to bring out the shovel, okay? I'm just enthusiastic about ANYTHING I see that I think is awesome, admirable, or beautiful, and for the life-of-me, I cannot refrain from letting my appreciation be known!!! :o/ So--DO NOT--DO NOT let my enthusiasm make you squirm nor compelled to dig up a perfectly beautiful clump, destroying it's symmetry for the rest of the season, JUST to give me a piece of it, cause I'm excited by it's maturity and beauty!!! We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

That's a wonderful suggestion. I'll have to ask my son if there is a specific one near to her heart. She went to school in California, Philippines, India & Boston & also worked in Seattle & Beijing so I'll have to ask him what he thinks. I'm sure there's something.

My nephew received a gift similar to the idea lynne posted at one of his b-day parties. It was perfect. I've recently seen those popcorn things in the local Target. Think I may pick some up to use for a kids gift.

We have 2yr old bday party on Saturday. The little guy is apparently into the Thomas the Tank stuff. That whole product line is extremely pricey even in Target. I ended up buying him one thing that represents what we do for a living so he will at least be able to connect the gift with the giver.

Thanks for reminding me of that gift idea lynne!

That popcorn/candy/movie tickets idea was one of my favorites for a teacher gift when my kids were younger. I used to buy the tub with the microwave popcorn at Blockbuster and then fill it with the goodies. I was just thinking today that it would be a great item for my secret pal at work!

That is a cute idea Lynn, I rarely go to Target and I don't know why. I guess Walmarts is closer.

My younger sister (55) and my niece (41) came from Michigan and Tennessee to visit me (60). We have a drive In movie in my town that they have wanted to go to for years. So, we all piled in the car a couple of weeks ago (with treats) and FINALLY went to the drive In and they loved it, since they haven't been since they were kids. Toy Story was showing (I know) but we went anyways and enjoyed it so much that I bought them a big baby key chain (for spare keys) so they will always remember it.

The screen was a old big sign I think and the train practically came right in the drive In. They all laughed saying "I bet the conductor thinks this is Small Town USA", it is very Mayberry.

I love my big baby key chain!
