Hi Betty,

We don't seem to be able to keep the diabetes thing together do we. I was just thinking of writing. I just found out that I have stage 3 kidney disease in addition to the diabetes. I don't know why it was just discovered. I would have thought my doctor would be watching for something like this. The food for kidney disease is the exact opposite of what you can eat with diabetes, so finding something to eat has gotten really tough. I'm going to try the link that socks provided.

Hello, What kind of diet are you following? Im type 2 and use a low carb diet to control my sugars and stay off as many meds as I can. If your following the ADA diet then im afraid I have no suggestions other than to do some research and rethink things. My Doctor supports me, but many dont even with proven results. Hi everyone. I was recently diagnosed with Type II and frankly am mortified. I guess I shouldn't be because that won't help me to control it. I've been reading some of the posts here and some of it is pretty frightening. However, I'm glad you all are here, it's encouraging. I think I need a little hand-holding because although I have a lot of resource info (beforehand), I'm not sure how to manage my eating and lifestyle. I haven't seen a nutritionist yet - that's coming soon, but I'm trying to watch my eating habits. I know that I need to increase my exercising. I've learned from before. I actually think my previous excercise routine kept the diabetes from starting earlier. Now I don't feel like doing anything. I have an exercise bike and a rowing machine here at home. They don't collect dust all the time, however, I do need to increase using them. Now that I've vented, I guess I'd like to know more details on managing my sugar levels. I'm supposed to take the metfomin - once in the PM, with food. I took it once and thought I would die!! I was so sluggish and couldn't tell if I was sleepy or tired or what. Emotionally, I was a wreck - grumpy and irratable, and I felt so frustrated. I finally took a nap because I couldn't do anything else. After that, I felt better, but still had the emotional thing going on. The other thing - after I took it, even into the next day, my hands, feet and arms were so hot - like prickly heat, only worse. My skin was on fire - very red and burning. I also swelled up so much, like I was retaining more fluid. I know it was the meds because nothing else changed and it hasn't happened since I stopped taking it. I called my Dr., but haven't heard back yet. Anyone else have those symptoms? Also, what is the difference in the timing for taking it. Some people have said with meals, others before and in the AM. Not sure about that. Sorry for the long post, but right now I feel pretty clueless. Thanks for listening - any info is much appreciated!! gng

I like the cooking forums ....I found this one www.justapinch.com.and Garden Webs cooking forums, KT, American Test Kitchen. As for computer information... I love the Computer Forum here and also Worldstart.com...great computer helpers...I learn so much from them. I like Facebook too. Enjoy your retirement...My DH and I are retired and love it...not enough hours in the day for us....we are always doing something...travel, gardening, computing, golf, tennis, biking, and our three grandchildren...LOL....I could on and on...I thank my blessings...keep busy...

Saintpfla, I can imagine that with diabetes, the metabolic issues make things different- particularly the constant hunger. As you probably know from experience, our issues are on the end of lack of appetite. I'm curious if your kitty does pretty well during the day otherwise? It is so tough to end up on one of these roller coaster rides. For our kitty we have been doing sub-q's regularly for 3.5 years and have tried various acid reducers as recommended by the vet. Sometimes increasing sub-q frequency helps with the vomiting, sometimes not; we haven't had particular luck with the acid reducers decreasing the vomiting. They have helped settle her stomach to eat at times though. What made her a good eater for a while in her illness was that she would eat competitively with her litter-mate. If she thought the food was out for him, she would gobble it down! He passed away from cancer in January, and her weight has dropped by a couple of pounds since then (from 9 to 7, I think)- greif and no one to compete against. Our vet encouraged us to consider getting another cat to get her to eat a little better, and we had an opportunity to take a kitten of a stray that my mother took in recently. We just got him on Wednesday (he's already been checked and is very healthy and safe for her), so we are hoping this might help her more than anything. I'm surprised at how quickly she's already taken to him after just a couple of days. She is eating better already too. Just a thought if you are interested, but there is a book (I had a copy for years) titled The New Natural Cat. She has some ideas about diabetes in there, particularly in regard to homemade meals that are better for the pancreas. I don't know enough about diabetes to give you much other information, but wonder if your cat would benefit from something like that? I'd bet there are recipes along the same lines on the internet- that is how I found the initial homemade kidney diet our cat ate for a while. FWIW, I've found that the premium carpet and upholstery cleaner that you can buy at Home Depot is great for cleaning up cat puke and is very economical. I mix it in an old carpet cleaner spray bottle (22oz?) and it takes just under 2 ounces of that concentrate to mix up a full bottle. A gallon goes a long way that way. Earlier on we were going broke buying bottles of ready mixed carpet cleaner. Best of luck and thanks for the ideas on our old girl.

So sorry to hear about the kidney disease. What symtoms did you have before you knew? What have your BS readings been before? I have a terrible time to keep mine down. Someimes I eat the wrong things. Not that much that I would think would hurt, but it does.Sometimes I just take another metformin. Not sure if that is ok.
Let us know how you are doing and what the doctor's are doing for you. We must keep you in our prayers.

Hi Betty, I didn't have any symptoms. I have labs done every 3 months because of the diabetes and the BUN and Creatnine levels are always part of the panel of tests. My doctor kept saying that my kidney function wasn't what is should be, but it was probably because I was dehydrated from fasting overnight. This last time my numbers were worse so he sent me for more blood work and had me do a 24 hour urine collection. Even though it came up that I had level 3 kidney disease, my doctor didn't call me. I asked my husband to ask about it when he was in for something and they gave him a copy of my labs with a scrawled note to call for an appointment with a nephrologist. I can't get in to a nephrologist until January. Meanwhile I am reading everything I can on the internet medical sites like John Hopkins and the Mayo clinic. They scare me. I don't know why I am developing complication of diabetes so rapidly. I was only diagnosed 3 years ago and I keep tight control. My A1c was up to 6.1 the last time, but even that is pretty good. My first number of the day is between 95 and 110. I try to stay under 140 all day and I never go to bed unless my blood sugar is under 120. I have an exercise bike so I can bring my sugar down whenever I need to. I exercise most days for 1 - 2 hours and sometimes more. I am pretty frightened about this kidney thing and I do appreciate your prayers.
