Have you ever had Arrabbiata Sauce?

I bought a expensive jar of this sauce made in Italy to have as something different when we next had pasta. I had no clue what it was until we started eating last night. We nearly died! The rest goes down the drain. Why didn't they put Hot or Spicy on the label? I don't buy Hot Salsa, we stick with Mild, and appreciate the label warning.

It might depend on the brand. I have bought Cento Arrabiata Sauce for years and mostly use in in recipes like chicken cacciatore. To my taste, it's spicy but not as hot as a regular salsa.

Clare, thanks for the warning, I sure won't buy any, I do not like extremely hot and spicy, I'm a wimp!

Thirty was happy for me. We were able to adopt our DS after six years of marriage and surgery that left me unable to conceive. This year has been an uneasy one because my mother died at this age -- in October. It was an awful year for her, slowing dying of leukemia, and for me as her only child. DH had mixed feelings when he reached the age at which his father had died of a heart attack. Because DH had never been told he was adopted, and because all of his father's brothers also died of strokes, he'd been allowed to assume he would have the same fate. (Another example of his adoptive mother's nature.) Now DH has lived 25 years longer than his father did. And ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead.

Hello Mike, That is an impressive plant. If it were a truly unique mutant, then in my opinion you would be justified in bringing it indoors, possibly with some credible indoor lighting, for an indefinite extension of its lifetime. But you can probably grow it again from commercial seeds. However, as an amateur zinnia breeder, I have had some zinnia flower forms that were uniquely different from what is available commercially, like this one for example. You can click the photo to see a larger version. So, on a few occasions, I have brought an outdoor zinnia indoors for continued growth under fluorescent lighting, along with zinnias that I was already growing indoors, but almost every time I came to regret it. The last time I did that, I inadvertently brought in some thrips from outdoors on the zinnia plant. The thrips had natural enemies that kept them under control outdoors, but indoors without enemies, they had a population explosion that nearly wiped out my indoor project. On another similar occasion, it was spider mites, and on a previous occasion, it was aphids. I won the battle with the aphids and the thrips, but lost it dramatically with the spider mites. So now the only thing I bring in from my zinnia garden is saved seeds. I would caution against possible similar problems with any plant you bring indoors from outdoors. I am not saying not to do it under any circumstance, but if you do, be prepared for a possible fight. ZM

I've never had a wild turkey for Thanksgiving but I've eaten at least a couple dozen over my lifetime. We always eat them fresh within a day or 2 of the kill and the seasons here are in April and October. My favorite ways to prepare is either grilled or cut the breast in thick slabs, bread or batter, and fry in peanut oil. Sometimes we soak the meat in buttermilk for several hours if time permits. I've never had one taste gamey at all. Best turkeys I've ever had were all wild.

I had a lot of predictive dreams when I was a teenager and in my 20s, and I also had very strong premonitions that came true. The strongest predictive dream I had was the day before I left for university, and this was a campus that I had never visited before - a recruiter from the university came to my high school, and that's how I filled out my application. Anyway, in my dream, I was walking toward the residential college, and I entered the building at a corner where there was a stairwell with stairs that went up half a flight and then down half a flight and then exited into a courtyard/quadrangle. In the dream, I thought that the half stairwell was very odd, and I had never seen anything like that, but the next day I entered the stairwell that I had seen in my dream and then exited into the exact courtyard that I had seen. This gave me an extreme déjà vu feeling, and I walked around for an hours as if I were in a trance. I sort of felt like I was hypnotized. Predictive dreams are supposedly quite common and up to 50% of people have them at some time in their lifetimes. I think they are most common earlier in life - at least for me. I used to go to UFO Expo West at the Airport Hilton at LAX in the 1990s, and at one of them I saw and met Al Bielek (of The Philadelphia Experiment fame), who talked about time travel, multiple dimensions, parallel universes, etc, and he said that time travel can happen when one enters a vortex, such as the one in October 1943, which opens up every 20 or 40 years (I forget which), and then one can travel through a wormhole to a different time or a distant planet. He also said that the past continues to exist, but it changes, and if you travel to the past, you go to the past as it is now - not as it was before, and if you travel to the future, then you travel to a probable future, as the future is always changing. One explanation for predictive dreams is that while dreaming, one can visit a probable future and see future events. The closer one is to that future, the more accurate it will be, but if you travel to a distant future, it will still be changing to much that it will be less accurate. Michio Kaku has written about multiple dimensions, wormholes, and parallel universes some of his books, notably the book Hyperspace, in which he says that Einstein's unified field theory predicts that there are 10 or 11 dimensions but that we are not able to perceive them most of the time. Perhaps we can get glimpses while dreaming.

The company should label it hot. But I guess they just assumed that you would know that Arrabbiata sauce was hot and spicy. It is one of my favourite quick to make sauces.

Cooks in no time at all and if you make it from scratch you can adjust the heat to suit your own taste.

Basically just olive oil, tomatoes, garlic, hot red pepper flakes, and parsley. Sometimes you will find it with a little pancetta added and fresh basil.

Rather than throw it out, why not mix it with plain sauce, and thus, you've got double the amount, with 1/2 the spice? I love hot and spicy anything, but YMMV.

I understand your distress, but I really don't think everything needs a warning label.

Well - I am another fan of Arrbiata and have found there is a huge difference in heat level depending on the brand. Sorry the one you got was too spicy for you, and I probably would try to dilute it down with another sauce or freeze it in small containers to add to a mild sauce whenever you have it again.

Never had it, never heard of it, but I want some!

A bit of trivia from Wiki:

All'arrabbiata means "angry style", named as such due to the heat of the peppers.

(Actually, I always give my serving of pasta & sauce a healthy shake of crushed red peppers so maybe I've been eating it all along & didn't know it!)

Ci_lantro, you'd probably love it, then. :)

The heat can vary by brand, but the very nature of the sauce is spicy. I guess they don't label like salsa it because all arrabbiata sauce is spicy whereas "salsa' is a word like "soup" in that it loosely defines the form of the food but not the ingredients or flavor.

Ah......penne all'arrabbiata ! I make my own, and it's not nearly as hot as the stuff you buy.

I don't mind a little heat but I think they threw in the whole jar of hot pepper flakes, not just a tablespoon or two. I like hot pepper flakes, just in very small doses, and have even put some on my pasta or pizza.

I tried diluting it with a large can of tomatoes after we found it was so hot, but it just made the tomatoes hot rather then the other way around.

I love a spicy hot pasta sauce. Of course, I love spicy hot anything.

A warning label is problematical. How do you define hot? I have eaten things I thought fairly bland, only to have a friend sputter and complain. Likewise, I've eaten dishes others said were just a bit spicy, and had tears running down my face as I ate! Reading ingredients on an unfamiliar product is probably your best bet, although even that can be chancy as just the inclusion of red peppers, for example, doesn't tell you how many!

One Indian restaurant I used to frequent brought new diners a single, fried samosa type turnover, spiced to what the chef considered "medium-hot" to help their customers determine how spicy to order their food. It was a good system.

I agree, spicy foods should be labeled, at least with the spicy ingredients displayed prominently on the label.

I don't like things very spicy, for me, it ruins the taste of perfectly good food. I just bought two packages of New England Country Soup. They looked good and I eat soup at work every day. Well......the white bean soup was so spicy it was inedible, even with the addition of three large spoonfuls of sour cream. Turns out, there are jalapeno peppers in the soup, but that info is buried in the ingredients, in a tiny, tiny font.

I would love to have known that and not wasted $5. Looks like the chicken corn chowder has cayenne pepper, hopefully, not too much.

Arrabbiata ids a favourite of mine too but I love spicy! The resident wimp doesn't do heat of any type so I have it rarely, usually when we go out for dinner.

However when I can my tomato sauce I always do one small arribbiata batch for those times I'm on my own. I use fresh hot peppers in it and trust me it has a kick!

As for labelinjg, I think extra spicy would clue most in 'cause very hot is not to most peoples palate and Arribbiata is not a term many my be familiar with

Loosely translated, penne all' arrabbiata means "angry penne". So they did warn you -- just not in English. :)

Seriously, I understand that you're upset it wasn't what you expected or like, but I don't think there was any intention to deceive. Out of curiosity, I checked several seriously hot items in my pantry. Not a warning label in sight. Take cajun spice mixtures, for example. I use them liberally, and you undoubtedly use them in very moderate amounts since you can't tolerate much heat. But we both know this simply because of familiarity -- not because Tony or Emeril 'warned' us. In the same way, arrabbiata is (by definition) a highly-spiced sauce. I think the manufacturer just assumed you would know...

I have a wonderful recipe if anyone would like it. It's sooo quick and easy. I think your family would love it, aptosca, if you cut the pepper flakes way, way down...say from 'mad as hell' to 'just slightly miffed'. :) The bonus is it's *real* cheap when you make it yourself.
