Proton Pump Inhibitors, Nexium, etc.

Can anyone here take those indigestion drugs without itching? I have not met anyone who is NOT allergic to them. I tried Protonex, Nexium, and Prilasec, makes my head itch. I have all kinds of left over pills, what a waste.

I have no problem at all. I am just so glad to have the acid reflux stopped. It took me months to get a prescription from my HMO. Every time I read about someone's Acid reflux progressing to esophageal cancer I get mad at my HMO all over again.

gandbb, I have gone off all indigestion meds except for one Zantac a day and 3 or 4 Tums. Tums are just calcium so not dangerous. I think the meds were rebounding, because I am so much better without them.

Make sure to take ALL the antibiotics they give you! Drink plenty of fluids, too...that helps with the reflux. I had a bout where I had a sore throat, then my throat closed up. I could breathe, but not swallow, it was miserable! Turned out that I'd had reflux, that caused an inflamation in my throat. They gave me what they called a GI cocktail, it was something with an anesthesia to ease the pain, and Maalox to reduce the acid. I was finally able to swallow, but boy, was that miserable. I get occasional reflux, and I up my quanitity of fluids. Some foods, not spicy, however, tend to be bigger triggers for me than others.

Or possibly what is already in the gut. Often it is what is consumed earlier, like fats...cheese, bacon. Or some commercial breads, the gluten. Often our daily intake follows a pattern, often convenient or just comfort...'i'll have that burger from so-and-so because it is just what i want today'...then that sits with a later meal of pasta and just does not 'sit/mix' so well. Fats like cheese before acids, like tomato, can cause some to be sensitive. Pasta with sauce AND cheese, and a dairy like a cream tomato sauce with lots of fresh herbs can balance the gut. Even better a good dollop of active yogurt. Sometimes a food can solve another foods issue without medications. A healthy active vinegar, a specific seltzer, a kiefer, fermented foods that seem can only be disruptive can often balance the erratic gut disturbances....at least that is some modern thinking rather than the thinking that they are THE disruptive acids causing the problem. I drink seltzer with fresh ginger. Not had a commercial soda in 30 yrs. I can't tell you how many people think plain seltzer is horrible for the gut...not sure who started that one. But then again, i have it just once or twice a week, sometimes a few times a day....my body tells me. The past few weeks it has been a giant glass of water bedside...filled a few times...probably the cold weather outside and the forced air heat inside.

Thank you for the kind words Linelle, we are unfortunately part of a club that no one should have to be in and my heart really does go out to you. You are right. I love your perspective and have learned something from it, thank you. My husband is currently in remission which is the best we can hope for right? The lesson I personally walked away with from this entire experience is that we, as patients (and advocates) need to be involved with our care and not just accept what a doctor says as gospel. ETA: I also am in a lot of clinics for work and chat with a lot of doctors. They really do want us to be involved and proactive too.

The Nissen Fundoplication is usually a last resort for uncontrolled GERD. As you know, the biggest downside is the inability to vomit. Another problem is that if the esophagus has lost much of its elasticity due to the acid, it can keep the food from moving on to the stomach, causing a blockage. Then surgery must be done to both remove the blockage and usually to reverse the Fundoplication. My gastroenterologist said it's a very tricky surgery. There are other new minimally invasive surgeries out there. Cleveland Clinic is the place to go - they are doing the most research on this issue. Unfortunately, I'm not a candidate for either the minimally invasive surgery or the Fundoplication. We have tried two drugs - the first caused such vertigo I could not take it. I haven't been that dizzy since I drank way too much bourbon while in college! It was awful! I'm now on a drug for anxiety (which I do NOT have) but which is used off-label for GERD. I think it is helping some. I'm VERY careful about my diet. It killed me this past winter not to be able to eat a bowl of tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich on a cold winter's night! No Italian food for me, either. No citrus fruits, cranberries, rhubarb, chocolate - the list goes on and on... I really try to follow these restrictions as I tend to aspirate stomach contents and end up with infection and pneumonia. It really has made my pulmonary problems far worse. I need a full renovation of my esophagus!

I am delighted to hear that is working for you. I am very glad not to be drinking Maalox in the middle of the night anymore. Waking up unable to breath because your stomach contents are in your throat is a frightening experience. I haven't been willing to try life without nexium, but I suppose I should find out if my stomach has healed to the point that I can. Continued good luck to you.

I was told your stomach should be healed in 8 to 12 weeks. It has not been tested for any longer than a year. You may not like this comment..I did stick to the Nexium for 4 months, itching head and all, but it quit working. My neighbor said it quit for her also. We were right back where we started. That is why I am trying so hard to watch what/how much I eat. I would do alright without my husband because I would eat when hungry and small meals. I would NOT go to pizza parlors, buffets, etc.. :o(

hmmm, sounds like I need to try getting off the stuff. I hate to because I will have to go back to being much more circumspect about what I eat. Even with the nexium I was up all night after eating pumpkin pie.
