Proton Pump Inhibitors, Nexium, etc.

Can anyone here take those indigestion drugs without itching? I have not met anyone who is NOT allergic to them. I tried Protonex, Nexium, and Prilasec, makes my head itch. I have all kinds of left over pills, what a waste.

I have no problem at all. I am just so glad to have the acid reflux stopped. It took me months to get a prescription from my HMO. Every time I read about someone's Acid reflux progressing to esophageal cancer I get mad at my HMO all over again.

gandbb, I have gone off all indigestion meds except for one Zantac a day and 3 or 4 Tums. Tums are just calcium so not dangerous. I think the meds were rebounding, because I am so much better without them.

Make sure to take ALL the antibiotics they give you! Drink plenty of fluids, too...that helps with the reflux. I had a bout where I had a sore throat, then my throat closed up. I could breathe, but not swallow, it was miserable! Turned out that I'd had reflux, that caused an inflamation in my throat. They gave me what they called a GI cocktail, it was something with an anesthesia to ease the pain, and Maalox to reduce the acid. I was finally able to swallow, but boy, was that miserable. I get occasional reflux, and I up my quanitity of fluids. Some foods, not spicy, however, tend to be bigger triggers for me than others.

I agree that many people tend to want a magic RX pill for everything. and often don't want to be active in managing their health with healthier lifestyle changes. However seeking out woo remedies or believing in the concept of good foods, bad foods super food pretty much the same type of thinking. There is one and only one cure for the common cold. Time. The vinegar is not magic. The magic is the hot drink (or really the steam from it) if you happen to like hot drinks. Honey is no more magical for soothing a throat than a lifesaver. It's sweet, it temporarily coats. So does a popsicle. I don't care for hot liquids as a rule so my body tends to crave spicy food when I'm ill. Maybe it helps to clear the sinuses or maybe I like it because my taste buds are dulled too much for bland foods. I don't overthink it. Unless I develope an infection the illness will go away in X number of day no matter what I do or don't do other than rest and stay hydrated. I'm sure not going to tell everyone that the spicy chili verde cured my cold. LOL

Thank you for the kind words Linelle, we are unfortunately part of a club that no one should have to be in and my heart really does go out to you. You are right. I love your perspective and have learned something from it, thank you. My husband is currently in remission which is the best we can hope for right? The lesson I personally walked away with from this entire experience is that we, as patients (and advocates) need to be involved with our care and not just accept what a doctor says as gospel. ETA: I also am in a lot of clinics for work and chat with a lot of doctors. They really do want us to be involved and proactive too.

My Mom had acid reflux and esophageal spasms. Her doctor prescribed just 10 mg famotidine (Pepcid), one in the morning and one at night. (the 10mg meant I couldn't buy them at Costco, their generic are 20mg) A gastroenterologist had suggested Prilosec and her PC changed it immediately, felt the famotidine would be easier on kidneys - and she already had osteoporosis, did not need another risk there. Aren't Nexium and Prilosec the same chemical makeup - omeprazole? The famotidine worked and stopped the heart burn and spasms (that she'd had for years). I take one only occasionally so I can't speak to the continued use other than knowing it worked for my Mom without side effects showing up in regular blood testing.

I am delighted to hear that is working for you. I am very glad not to be drinking Maalox in the middle of the night anymore. Waking up unable to breath because your stomach contents are in your throat is a frightening experience. I haven't been willing to try life without nexium, but I suppose I should find out if my stomach has healed to the point that I can. Continued good luck to you.

I was told your stomach should be healed in 8 to 12 weeks. It has not been tested for any longer than a year. You may not like this comment..I did stick to the Nexium for 4 months, itching head and all, but it quit working. My neighbor said it quit for her also. We were right back where we started. That is why I am trying so hard to watch what/how much I eat. I would do alright without my husband because I would eat when hungry and small meals. I would NOT go to pizza parlors, buffets, etc.. :o(

hmmm, sounds like I need to try getting off the stuff. I hate to because I will have to go back to being much more circumspect about what I eat. Even with the nexium I was up all night after eating pumpkin pie.
