Well, almost favorite, LOL. Passover is right around the corner.

Three significant days follow each other - opportunities for culinary tie-ins.

Tomorrow I think we'll have pizza 'pi' and apple or strawberry 'pi'. I did buy a 'woot' tshirt just for this day.

Tuesday we'll have Italian, with Caesar salad, of course,

And corned beef and cabbage for days on end while the sales are good on the 17th!

So....what'll you eat Wednesday?
How about some clay pot cookery in honor of Cassius....or is that too much of a stretch?

Wednesday? March 16th, the day after? I can't connect Cassius Clay to the Ides LOL...but it is The Beast Blake Griffin's bday...I'll watch a Clippers game.

Fall has always has been my favorite time of the year also. Except last year, MN did a number on me. I have five huge maple trees in my yard and as long as I can get the leaves collected and shredded before they get to wet I am ok. Not last year though, I think the first raindrop hit the ground before the first leaf and it never stopped until the leaves were down. I am still composting those leaves. On the road home, after a great week. On the food front, and especially on the drink front, our group seemed to be a bit ''lite'' this year. Not as Bacchannalian as in some prior years. That was okay, I actually stuck to my diet. How? More in a sec. For dinners, there were a couple of curries, one evening of Zachary's deep dish pizza, and one night out at a Basque restaurant in Nevada. Grill night was some perfectly grilled kabobs (W____). There were various pastas, including a lemon linguine and a spaghetti carbonara (SWMBO). T_____ won the ''simplest tasty'' award with an entire salmon fillet poached in salt, pepper, onion and vermouth. We had chicken thighs stuffed and trussed, different variations: gorgonzola & walnut, brie & apple, roast veg & salami, jalapeno & jack cheese (one of the N____'s). There was chicken in a cream, corn, and capers sauce, and a boeuf bourguignon. We had a risotto, lots of salads and salsa, roast veg, gallons of Peet's coffee, quinoa salad, fried chicken skins, tiramisu, crumbles, ice cream, lots of peaches and plums, cheese, bread, etc. And only 12 bottles of wine for the week, part of a fifth of scotch, two cigars, and some tequila. Weird - normally we go through a couple cases of wine at least. Like I said, everyone was watching their health, at least a little. I guess that's part of getting older. As is long talks about raising teen girls (how do you decide which parties they may go to?) and the aging and passing of our parents. Much of each has been going on in our group this year (my parents are fine, thanks). So, I know the mystery is, how do you stick to a diet on a vacation week centered around friends and food? Partly by cooking a lot, since the more I cook, the less I eat. Also partly by cheating with exercise. I didn't really stick to 1200 cal/day. Instead, if I did X cal of activity that day, I ate 1200 + X. Turns out that if one hikes 4 hours, or kayaks 3 hours, well, that is a significant ''X''. Now, that's exercise I enjoy. Paddling on a glass lake at dawn, walking through a high mountain meadow filled with wildflowers - lots better than a treadmill in a smelly gym. Alas, I don't live in the High Sierra.

I have had this for about five of its twelve years. I have raised the caudex slightly. Gave it a slight hair cut when I got it. Blooms every spring for a month. I still prune for more branching on the back side. I usually water once a week with 1/2 dose Pro-tek & KLN. Rick just suggested to water twice a week this time with just water. It has been so hot. The plants are under 85% shade awning. All 20 of my plants love it. I am not an expert. As Dain pointed out two I pruned are ugly. I hope they fill in. I use a adaptation of Als Gritty mix. I could not find all products listed. I use Happy Cat zeolight kitty mix, small Grow stone, pine fines, small clay beads. Had to add a little potting soil to keep it more moist. We were 18% humidity today. I have a love hate relation. With heavy fabric pots. Great in summer when they can quickly free drain. But winter in Ca I use no heat or lights. Water every couple weeks to month with drain pans. The fabric pots tell me the roots and caudex are growing by the way the sides bulge. I don't touch the roots for a few years. Like narly roots.

This post (and all the comments) cracked me up! I know my husband is looking forward to corned beef and cabbage. He "told" me by buying some corned beef and putting it at eye level in the fridge. You know - so I wouldn't forget. ;)

I ended up making pizza
and 'Mark Anthony & Cheese' - using orecchiette pasta, grin. That generated eye roll #1. I took Stacie's idea and told my family, no knives, and that was eye roll #2. FTW!

Helene you are having so much fun with this, you can help me find April 20th ideas. Brownies OK, German/Austrian food is not. It will be Passover so I will have a few restrictions!

I can't think of anything more appropriate than brownies. Alice B. Toklas recipe, to be precise. That's more food-friendly than Look Alike Day or Volunteer Recognition Day. Yeah, and Hitler's birthday.

Go for the brownies. Which is probably what your kids were hinting for in the first place!

Oh, wait, you can celebrate the cuisine of Magnolia Thunderpussy. Way back when, way WAY back, you could order delivery from her place, and the brownies were the biggest sellers, I guess.

Well, April 20 is George Takei's birthday, so maybe some out-of-this-world Japanese food.

As far as the wine selection, go with Montepulciano: April 20 is the feast day of St. Agnes of Montepulciano.
