Wowser...sounds like a successful cycle already. I never got more than a couple to even transfer much less extras. (3 cycles total for me) That's fantastic! Saying extra prayers and sending sticky thoughts to your little embryos to settle in nicely in Mama's tummy! Good Luck again!
Wow! Twenty!! We had six. I hope it works! Sending pregnant thoughts your way. This is always so exciting for me. I feel like the grandmother of this process. LOL! There were only a couple babies born when we participated in IVF.
Don't know how long DSL will be up so I'll make it brief (for once!). I lost track of the 2WW, only a few days now and you'll know! You fertile mama you - I only had 2 good embies (did PGD) each time, but it only takes 1! Take it easy - are you on progesterone? Can't wait to check in on the 9th. Got everything crossed for you x-)
Gold you're a pioneer of baby making :oP Heh heh I can't imagine the process back then! What a cool thing to be in the forefront of! Even if it didn't work, and I'm sure that was heartbreaking, now, so many years later, do you feel it was worth the try? In the 80's to me, IVF was like space ships and mars :) Way beyond my reach.
Amazing how many here have done it now. Aj is I assume the result of your trys ajsmom? PGD is amazing, and well worth the added costs. We expect to loose a lot more embies due to the PGD but only lost a few. They think the long bake (I was stimming for 3 weeks extra) made the difference, but still, no one expected such a strong outcome...heck I didn't want one LOL aside from the fact that we figured the more the merrier because we were told to expect (at my advanced age) to lose 75% of them to the results.
So today is day 6 after transfer, and we're not supposed to know until day 9....but we actually found out today :) Our trip was successful. They've moved my blood tests up to tomorrow and wednesday because we had the positive home pregnancy test. Tomorrow is to check a base line of hcg then you need it to more than double on the next one to be sure it's a viable pregnancy. They expect because of all the "stuff" we did that it will be, but we'll be glad to know by wednesday! Then the next hurdle....how many took? Am I octomom? (Ok we couldn't have more than 4 tops but thgat would mean two natural twinnings...not likely...so we expect one or two).
We have only one name per sex LOL
Oceanna....you're coming over for coffee when we move to WA!!!
It was disappointing, igloo, but not heartbreaking. We decided to try it once and then move on toward adoption. I just felt in my heart that my family was meant to be built another way. It *is* exciting when others get pregnant through IVF. I seriously feel like a grandmother of the procedure. It was absurdly controversial back then. "What will you tell the children?, Blah, blah, blah."
They used this horrible gas for egg retrieval that was very painful later. Embryos weren't graded and all 6 embryos were implanted (no freezers back then). I always felt that if I had two implanted at a time, maybe it would have worked. I remember waking up in the middle of the night cramping. Maybe too many stuck and my body freaked out. LOL!
That said, I have given birth and raised a biological child so it's not like I don't know what it is like so in that way, I'm different than many who never know what it feels like to be pregnant, etc.
I seriously hope we get to celebrate another successful IVF with you. I get all happy just thinking about it. There is no sadness or regrets here. My destiny included adoption. :+)
I'm so glad you get more than once chance. Twenty eggs is a population explosion! :+)
Darn DSL - though now I think it's the (new) modem. I uncrossed my eyes long enough to see you've got a ++++ HPT. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Be sure to post the HCG levels when you get them!
Yes AJ#2 (girl - DS is an AJ too - makes hand me downs easier LOL) is result of 2 IVFs after 2 MCs (one blighted ovum and one baby girl lost to Edwards). No IUIs here - went right to IVF when I wasn't pg 10 mos after corrective surgery (to remove scar tissue due to multiple D&Cs with the 2 MCs - 3 total - long story). I was 39 and knew time was running out, though RE said he saw no reason why I wasn't getting pg. Had about a dozen eggs each time, but only 2 each time were normal embies.
That's awesome news Igloo! I hope your numbers continue to rise for you!!
I did not have success with IVF but we had two of us with medical issues to overcome. The Doctors thought that my chances of becoming pregnant were worse than winning the lottery. (we had been trying for over 6 years) We adopted our first daughter who is the light of our lives. Then, I perpetuated the age old myth that as soon as you adopt, you'll become pregnant. Sure enough....daughter #2 was born a year later. Guess I should have bought that lottery ticket after all! ;c)
Iggy, oh thank you, I would love to! I would love to meet you, see your new home, and see that little cutie of yours. Are you getting that Victorian place you posted the pictures of over on the Penninsula? Or are you going to be over here on the mainland?
Good thing you are buying that big house with lots of bedrooms! heh heh. Hope things keep going well for you and your family! Think about you and your guys often. Oh and the chicken and the moose too. Sue
I'm such an idiot. I didn't even finish reading your post. I always finish reading but I got distracted and just came back to great news! I missed where you said the most important thing! Positive pregnancy test! Woo!
That is wonderful news, igloo. May the baby/babies stick like glue. Let us know about the test. Twins, maybe? Woo hoo!
What wonderful news, Igloo! I originally got involved with GW (on a now defunct infertility forum) waaaay back when my DDIL and DS were in fertility treatment -- I wanted to understand more about what they were going through, both medically and emotionally. Thanks to IVF, they now have a 6-year-old and 3-year-old twins -- we were actually at their house watching the numbers soar when the twins were "starting!" Very exciting stuff. They had hoped for a large family, 6 frozen embies, but unfortunately, none of those stuck.
So I'll be joining you with crossed fingers and "sticky thoughts!" Best of luck to you.
:) We had our first beta hcg...remember now, no one gets tested this early LOL (I'm officially 13 days pregnant and most don't even know until after 31) the only reason I got a beta today was the doc is a close friend. So my number was 34. That's a high normal for a single and a low normal for a twin pregnancy, but hcg levels vary so much it's totally inconclusive aside from verifying a pregnancy. Wednesday I go back and do another to be sure they're doubling (which means "viable") and then on the 22nd we get the real answer on how many took.
Because there were two there is of course the chance that they both took. But they don't always start producing hcg this early (ie number one could have implanted a day or two before number two so it would be producing more) so it's just a really really inconclusive thing til we see an ultrasound. DH and I are actually embracing the twin idea but anything is great. We won't do another full pregnancy to have three kids, so if we're lucky and two take now, what the heck :) Two isn't much different than 3 :oP
(I can say that after having number one be so horrible...not even twins are as bad as a very sick child!)
DS is not getting this thing at all. We keep asking if he'd like to be a big brother (NO!!!) and then we ask if he wants a little sister like Rosie (his favorite cartoon) and he says NOOOOO!!!!!! We've agreed that we will name a girl Rosie if he's nice for 48 hours (unlikely thank goodness) and we have tossed around naming the children after his favorite cartoon characthers (so Lightening McQueen Roary will be our boy...and Rosie Purple Car will be our girl). I think the new babies should be happy he's over the telletubbies fascination or their name could be twinkie pooh :oP
I'm not allowed to lift anything over 10lbs for six weeks....GAD do you know how little that is? Sheesh my home improvement days are over (but no vacuumming as well...I'm so sad about that LOL)
Oh let's see Oceanna....we are going to have a home in Port Townsend for sure. We like the schools and it's close to grandma :) We also love the town. We had many wishes in a perfect town and it meets almost all (no college was the only downfall). We hope for that to be in our lovely Victorian, but we'll have to see if we can get the gal to actually want to sell it (eyes rolling). If we don't, another house will call and we'll wait her out :) Someday it will be ours :oP We're kind of driven like that LOL HOpefully by October, but we'll just have to see.
I am soooo excited for you. I'm just now catching up on this thread, but I totally understand! My ds was IVF try #3 (now 8 yrs old) and my dd was try #4 (now 6 yrs old). My dd had a disappearing twin, so I understand about that as well. Lots of sticky thoughts coming your way :-) Congratulations!!
Congratulations! I hope everything continues to go well and you have two beautiful babies to go with your adorable moppet of a son. Good luck. Take it easy. Is your DS's favorite cartoon Caillou (younger sis named Rosie) My 3 yr old DS adores everything caillou-you should hear his imaginary conversations with rosie, its hilarious!
Congrats on the good news- here's a poem that might describe your future days in WA. I must give credit to the poet- Oak Boesky- whose poem captures the mood so perfectly.
I'll have to embroider that poem on a pillow :oP But I'm from WA and used to the weather, though PT is actually in a rain shadow (not nearly as much as seattle for instance) which is nice.
LOL Ya'll voting for twins. I'm already having morning sickness (which lasts all day for me) so I hope they can live off my fat because crackers are all they're eating now a days (and I'm only 15 days preggers sheesh)
vinudev LMAO Yes of course you got the show right. We must get our sons together. Mine actually repeats episodes verbatum, we do the Jason and Jeffry arguing over a toy which ends in "Sharing and taking turns, blah blah" as well as The scene where Caillu breaks gives his mother the new mug he made to replace the old one "Dooooo yoooouuuu wannnnttt some coooofffeeeee????" God forbid anyone who answers that question incorrectly (the correct answer is "No thank you".
I often hate that little bald kid :oP (Jesse learned the stomp and say no fit from him) but I also love it because he learned "sharing and taking turns" LOL
I wonder what he'll have moved onto when the new baby/ies are watching Caillu...
Yes, barfing is a good sign - though I hope it doesn't last the whole 9 months! I forget when it started with DD - but it was multiple x per day, tapering to once a day, ending about 30 min b4 she was born. Woke up 5AM, barfed, didn't even realize I was in labor for another 30 min (and 2 contrax) b/c I was so used to starting my day that way. She was born 8:16AM (5 min after they broke my water).
igloo - sorry about the morning sickness, but it is a good sign. Boy do I know what it is like to not be allowed to carry anything heavier than 10 lbs and how hard it is to not do it. I couldn't do that for the whole pregnancy along with no vaccuming (which I used to do a lot) and a bunch of other restrictions to not do anything. Along with P17 shots it kept my girl in until 36 weeks without full bedrest so I'm not complaining and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
lyfia, I'll probably be following in your footsteps...we're doing estrogen in pills and progesterone shots every day (DH loves to do those shots LOL)
They wanted my beta to come close to doubling or be close to 60 (it doubles about every 72 hours and it's been 48). It trippled to 103 so they want to do another test on friday to see if it's high on the normal day I would have had my first test.
What exactly are you saying? Triplets? Maybe an embryo split? What? Say this again. I don't want to be reading anything in that you aren't saying. I'm saving my twins/triplets IVF celebration dorky dance until I hear from you again. LOL!
Back in the day, I didn't have anything (progesterone or estrogen) *after* the embryos were implanted. Go medical technology!
DH loved giving me pergonal. (Do they still use that drug?) I'm out of touch with today's IVF procedure but curious.
Igloo - I'm so happy for you and I hope your restrictions won't be too bad and you won't have to do bedrest. Mine was basically sit on my ... for the whole pg so it could have been worse. My DH hated doing the shots at first, and then he'd joke around about them after he got the hang of it. They did keep me from going into labor because as soon as we stopped she came.
Your numbers sound great!!! When is the u/s to confirm how many?
lyfia and igloo- I'm with you on the progesterone shots. Mine were mixed with peanut oil. Boy is that thick stuff! My dh also did the shots and didn't have any problems doing them (he was used to giving our horses shots). He was also joking about them, lol. Luckily, I only needed them for about 4 weeks.
igloo---- your number look fantastic! Twins are looking good!
I do have a funny story to tell about the shots from the cycle that we conceived my son. We did the embryo transfer on 6/30/00. On the 4th of July that year, we spent the day on a friend's house boat. When it was time for the progesterone shot, we asked the owner of the boat where would be a good place to do "it". (My dh explained that we were trying to conceive without giving too many details about the IVF procedure). Anyhow, we were only gone about 5 minutes and thought no one really knew what was going on. Well.... we found out last year that this friend didn't realize that were were doing a shot of medication (and not "it") and spread the rumor that we conceived our son on his boat that evening! We all got a good laugh out of that one. I have a few other stories about giving the shots, too. You get some pretty strange looks in public bathrooms when you're doing them.
Yeah on the big numbers! Twins??? Too soon to tell, but can't wait to see tomorrow's number! When's the u/s?
So funny about shots - that boat story! I did get some strange looks in rest rooms (esp. 1 fancy restaurant) when taking the stimming shots. I had big old horse pills for the progesterone though (and didn't take them orally - good thing b/c I have horrible sensitive gag reflex). I hear the peanut oil is the worst!
Congratulations, what an exciting time for you & your family.
I don't know anything about these procedures & shots so I have a few questions.
Do the shots have to be given at a specific time so that people are in places other than their own home? Why does the partner give the shot, because of where it is injected (meaning your posterior not the public restroom)? Does the stuff come in peanut oil or do you have to make up this bizarre, but oh-so-necessary, concoction? I'm making myself light-headed just asking these questions, I can't imagine how you all had the guts to do it.
When you have morning, or all day sickness, what color green is your complexion? Does it clash with your lovely golden walls at home?
hhireno - I was taking the P17 to prevent pre-term labor and we were told to always do it at the same time and not let it laps, but it was just a weekly shot. I started it at 16 weeks and had the last at 35 weeks.
The shot has to be given by somebody else as it goes into a muscle and the best spot is the "rear end" (from a car nut).
I don't know what mine was mixed with, but it was really thick and it is done by a compounding pharmacy that mixes their own medicines.
Until pregnancy I'd never heard of that. I have since then and after giving birth used compounded meds. They have an awesome cream for Breast feeding mothers with sore and damaged nipples.
LOL On the boat story :) My worst "catch" was giving a stim shot to myself in a restaurant bathroom. I was taking menopur and follistem. Follistem is one shot and menopur is in a vial and has to be mixed with sterile water (it's actually five vials for my dose). So there I was, alcaholing down the counter in the bathroom, then spreading out all of my drugs, getting the shots ready (you just can't do this while sitting on a toilet). Some young gal walks in and says "Oh my god" and runs out. They left the restaurant LOL What a dork...I wasn't snorting coke.
The progesterone and estrogen are supportive to the pregnancy and reduce a significant number of pregnancy losses. You start taking them to build up your lining first, and then once the eggs are retrieved you start the progesterone to make the lining the right texture (something like that LOL) It also helps relax the uturus and keeps cramping down, which can lead to early pregnancy loss.
And yes you do the shots at a pretty specific time (progesterone is within a one hour window). They want to keep the levels fairly even in your system for the best chances of success. And because it's in the bumm (large muscle down under that fat somewhere) I would have a hard time doing it myself (though I'm going to have to when he travels...I hear it's no fun). I do them daily for three months. The stim meds were the same, within that hour window, but they are given in the stomach so I did them myself. The last round was four shots a day! Yikes never again LOL My progesterone is not in peanut oil...but it's still in oil that's just a little thinner. They used to tell you to refridgerate it which really makes it bad to take. Now it's kept at room temp which helps, but the shots do cause lasting hip pain and if I don't sit on a heating pad afterwards they leave welts.
Ok no they don't think tripplets, just twins (we had two embryo's transfered). Because we did PGD and a 5 day transfer, twin (natural splitting) from one egg are pretty rare (actually they're just a little bit lower than the normal rate without drugs). Everyone has decided if there are twins that's ok, but that I can't carry tripplets. We'd have to reduce and we really don't want to do that so let's hope my odds are just twice as good this month verses three times :oP
We do one more blood test tomorrow to see if the "trend" is continuing (doubling to trippling in the 48 hour period) then an ultra sound on the 22 will confirm the number and the viability of the pregnancy. Given the constant nausea I'm told they're pretty good so far :) (Sad when you wish to feel like crap all of the time LOL) I'll keep ya'll posted. (Gold if I have three you have to carry one of them LOL)
LOL! No, I won't carry one but I swear I will send you daily affirmations for the rest of your life if it's triplets. Hehehe. Twins is a good thing but triplets wouldn't be that bad... At least you have the ability to hire some help.
Well, you will have your work cut out for you with DS. He doesn't even want *one*. LOL! (I swear, I'm laughing *with* you.)
That's great news about the HCG, Igloo! Hope everything continues to go well. About the nausea-I don't know if you like candied ginger. You should be able to get some from oriental grocery stores(oops, do you have those up there near the North pole :-)) or Whole Foods etc. That was the only thing that helped with my nausea-and lying down all the time-with DH running around! ha! those were the times! Now I have a 3 yr old to run after.. About our 3yr olds, isn't it amazing how much they absorb from those half an hr shows? Thankfully, Caillou isn't one of those heavily marketed shows(at least here in the US)..otherwise I would be shelling big bucks every time we went to the store!
Great news! So glad you are feeling barfy! had to have progesterone too and remember my doc being ecstatic that I was so sick. So sorry you can't vacuum, perhaps you can take your mind off that loss by shopping on line for fabric. I know thats not the same as vacuuming, but man up! And if somehow you end up having more children than bedrooms in the PT house, we can do a reality show involving igloos in the tundra so its all good. Take care
