Let's make virtual CF 'Poopy Stew'..What would you add?

Let's make a stew, virtually, from everything that you hate.

I will start with making the soup base. I am poaching a dozen of the blue gills that DH caught yesterday. Now that they are done, I will set aside the meat and use it for a seafodd and fish chowder, so back to the "Poopy Stew".

I now have a fish base to which I am adding one cup of lima a beans.

What will you add? Let's not add any seasonings until the vegetables are cooked.

Diane, that is brilliant. They really are not good for anything else. They will add color, AND some acidity. I still am not sure Nancy put enough meat in it. Anybody got any meat that they hate they want to throw in? I was thinking lamb, myself, but I have none to put in. Then we might want to start adding spices.

The new super soil is not as good as the old mix was, but it is not a bad mix, but the old one was better. The sell it at a Store called Friedman's in Petluma which is near Santa Rosa. I think they made it themselves at acres of orchards and there is no way you ever find something that good quality again. One would have to make it themselves, which is going be much harder with a disablity. One need a earth mover to create the same soil or hire some very strong men to turn it a lot. It would not be possible, but not realistic. Someone else can maybe say, how to make something like this. The best one you can buy at home depot is called Black Magic and its peat, and coir. Happy Frog Farm is the most expensive soil and its good, but I never buy it, as I need a lot of soil, but money was no object I would buy that brand of soil. I have not tested out Happy Frog Farms, but I am fairly sure its good. I always look at the ingredients list on the back of the bag.

Ok I'll stick my neck out but upfront is a BIG disclaimer that in no way is this tested, approved or even recommended. And add all that stuff the fast talking lawyers say on the adds on TV, ok? ;) The BBB Boston Baked Beans is the closest to your recipe posted above. 1 qt. dried navy beans (about 2 lbs.) 1/2 lb. salt pork cut into pieces 3 large onions, sliced 2/3 c brown sugar 2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. dry mustard 2/3 cup molasses Since you will be using the Bush canned beans I won't include the part in the recipe about pre-soaking/rehydrating the dried beans. Pour beans into a baking dish or bean pot. Add pork and onions. Combine remaining ingredients and 4 cups of the reserved bean liquid and add water to make 4 cups if necessary. (I would measure the juice from the Bush cans and bring it up to 4 cups with extra water, maybe even add a can of tomato sauce to it.) Ladle sauce over the beans, cover and bake at 350 degrees for about 3 1/2 hours. Add water if necessary as beans should be soupy. Pack hot beans and sauce into hot jars leaving 1 inch headspace.** Remove air bubbles. Adjust 2 piece caps. Process pints 1 hours and 20 mins, quarts 1 hour and 35 mins at 10 lbs. (depending on altitude). Now for the deviations: I see no problems with adding the pineapple as it is acid, HOWEVER it will change the density so finely chop it (not chunks) and add the pineapple juice too. Your recipe calls for less onions so use its lesser amount and the ketchup in your recipe to help compensate for the change in density the pineapple causes. This gets you everything EXCEPT the peppers and you will have to use dried, not fresh, for those - either dried pepper flakes of some kind or dried peppers that have first been rehydrated in vinegar, not water. Follow me? Just too much pH effect otherwise. Of course you can always add them after you open the jars at serving time too. **When it comes to filling the jars you MUST have this be SOUPY and thinner than normal, much soupyier than you wish. The other baked bean recipes say "fill the jar only 3/4 full and the rest of the jar with liquid, remove air bubbles and add more liquid If you have to add more water to the cooking liquid to have enough - do it. Better too thin than too thick. You can thicken it up at serving time by cooking it down or adding a bit of corn starch or flour. OK? Dave ~ ducking from the hail of stones ;)

ella - what a lovely space you created! To help keep the soil in good shape you'll need to add organic matter yearly. Compost spread as mulch in late fall topped with irregular wood chips has worked well for our beds. I reach into the beds in spring using whatever tool is handy to be sure the mulch is pulled back from the plants, but don't dare step into the beds because the soil is just too soft & wet. Slug control is 3 pronged - sluggo type bait, hunt & remove when soil is moist, & also spray with ammonia water... Repeat. Repeat. Especially vigilant late summer to get all the adults possible and in early spring spray often with the ammonia water to get in & around emerging hostas to prevent damage. You're right that Burgundy Glow ajuga spreads less vigorously than Bronze Beauty, but in my 9 month wet climate still spreads fairly well. --3 Burg. Glow bareroot starts from a plant swap this April -- poor soil mulched with coarse wood chips around stepping stones across a low area in part shade became 30+ by now in August spreading out 3 feet square! --spring planted Bronze Beauty 12" apart on center by the next spring was solid around stepping stones, hose reel, etc. That patch is easily 4 feet x 6 feet up & over each other so that not all even rooted just runners spread. Easy care for that area when stepped upon & an easy source of countless starts for other gardens. In another area about 10 runners removed & planted became 3 feet x 6 feet in a year's time growing over pathway rocks toward stepping stones in the middle of the path. If you keep an eye on it & remove the excess runners your hosta will be safe. Otherwise the ajuga will over run & shoot runners between stems & even into the crown. Since the biggest growth spurt is in late spring I just snip the runners in early summer before they root. I am running out of new garden space and friends who don't have their own ajuga patch.

Grainlady, sorry, I seem to have chosen my words poorly with my statement of you living your life around the laundry. I did not mean for it to sound negative as it appears you may have taken it, instead, it was actually a compliment to how well you plan your tasks. And a slave to laundry is exactly what that LG was going to do to me. Fortunately, it went back to the store today, and a different unit comes tomorrow! Gslgal, I still don't think I was over using soap, as I was also testing an HE - the Kirkland Free & Clear liquid HE, at 1/2 the max line. My water is 7.6pH (slightly alkaline) and 20 gpg, extremely hard. As I posted elsewhere, what I found interesting before they took the LG FL away today, was that with the amount of water that LG would use, there was little to no sudsing. When I added water manually, the more water, the more sudsing I would see. This happened in both the wash and the rinse cycles. I found this very strange, as I had thought that I was diluting the soap, and thereby diluting its ability to suds. Instead, the more water helped it to froth up. Oh, the soap brand did not seem to matter. It did this with Ariel (2 tbls), FAB (3 tbls) and also Kirkland Free & Clear HE (1/2 of max line). I like the FAB the best so far, as even though it does suds a small amount, it seems to rinse out much better unlike the other soaps. What else is strange is that the harder the water, the more detergent that has always been recommended, yet I am using the same or in the case of FAB, less than, others, who state having softer water, have posted. The problem you had with the removal of the dog hair is because it is an insoluble that requires water to remove. I was nearly floored the other day at Lowes when I read in their catalog on F&P products where F&P was saying that one of their units allowed the user to increase the water to remove the insoluble items such as hair, sand and lint that would not otherwise be removed. They actually admitted that it would not otherwise be removed! I wonder how long that will remain in the literature..... Suburbanmd, I must have been lucky with my prior W&D set. My dryer is gas (I'm keeping my old, working unit - can you say I'm cheap?). The only time I would have a backup at the dryer was when I was drying the load of towels. I compensated for this by having worked out what was washed in what order so that towels were being dried while the small load of dark undies were being washed. When they were finished, they were place on top of the dryer while I next washed the small load of whites. When the whites were done, out came the towels and in went the two small loads that had finished, making a more decent sized load anyhow for the dryer to run and being more efficient with the gas. With this method, I had a constant throughput with no backups at either machine. SeattleMike, I definitely agree with you that going from TL to FL is a major change. Also a major change is going from a non-water saver to a water saver model. I'm still trying - that's why I bought another water saver - just less of a saver. Hopefully it works well for me when it arrives tomorrow, as I really like the tub size of 4.5 cf. I already have sorted out my test loads! Thanks to all for all the great input!!! Schutzhund

Surely someone has some frozen doves from dove season??? Be warned that when they are cooked they smellllll to high heaven! It can really put you off ever eating them (or cooking them) again!

I bet Nancy of the North could get those kids of hers to wrestle up some varmints to add to this stew. Get those rug rats out there and have 'em shoot us some more possum and squirrel!

I have some lamb chops in the freezer that are very freezer burned. You may have them. I also have some fish heads and shrimp shells in there, while we're at it.

Stacie, thank you for removing the real poopy. The Kim Chee was a nice addition. Mystery packs are also. proudmama, the fish head and shells are great, but would you mind putting them in cheesecloth so we can remove the inedible parts when the stew is done?
OK. I am adding spice now. Since I absolutely detest curry powder (yes, even Penzey's fresh) I will put in a 1/2 tsp of that. Or do you think it needs more?

Tarragon will complement the fish base, and the lamb as well. I almost forgot the cheesecloth, Sherry, thanks for the reminder. I just bought some too!

This sounds like it will be wonderful!

I'm sending the older kids out hunting and the younger ones are checking the roadways right now.

It's a little too early here for wild leeks and ramps...but let's throw in some dried hot peppers.

Tell those kids to look out for fiddlehead ferns while they are out there. I always thought those things looked kinda creepy and slimey when cooked.

Collards and rotabagas would make the whole house smell good!

When the soup is done, add some limburger and raclette to the top before serving.

I think you are putting too much "Good" stuff in that stew...
Never had stewed eggplant but I like it fried, roasted and baked...and with goat cheese as well...
How about if I pick all the kidneys out of my steak and kidney pie and add them?....and you can have any Rocky Mountain Oysters anyone might offer to me as well.

WELL - nobody has mentioned stinky cheese yet so let's add 250 grams of limburger to the stew, whatsay?

My maternal grandfather, hailing from Indiana, used to keep the stuff in the unheated stairwell of his house and also bring it to ours. I never got past the stench of it as a child, and have never sought it out as an adult.

You can add the sour box of chicken stock that I finally found was the source of the smell in my refrigerator but I have to tell you if it has goat cheese I would probably eat this stew no matter what else is in it!

OK, I have some olives to add to it, along with a jar of caviar that someone gave me, icky little salty fishy eggs. That ought to go well in the fish stock.

Add some beef short ribs, make it good and greasy, then some blue cheese and some lamb....

And limberger...I love limberger...and Liederkrantz which is no longer made and biercase...and most stinky cheeses...
How about if I made a real sacrifice and add some tofu? And then perhaps thicken it with a slurry of soy flour and soy milk....but since there is no glutin it probably wouldn't work.

I'll toss in the can of Spam someone gifted me with, now there is a bit more protein. Oh wait, more protein, I have some really gross vegetarian meatballs in the freezer. They don't taste like vegetables or meat so I'm not sure what they are other than low fat, high fiber and inedible! MMMM! Those should go really good with the tripe, brussel sprouts, and curry powder!

Is it too late for me to offer some Sea Cucumber to the mix? I don't see that we have anything the texture of bicycle tires yet.

Adding some SeiTan (textured vegetable protein that looks like dried cat doo) would be considerate for the vegetarians who might drop in.

Being that some of the ingredients aren't of the freshest nature, I suggest a good dose of MSG to "freshen up" the flavors.

Teresa, if your kids find the fiddleheads, I want them! I haven't had them since I was a kid (can't get them around here, though bracken fern shoots can be found) and I loved them. They taste like furry asparagus.

I have a few of those mystery leftovers in my fridge. The plastic containers aren't completely clear, so it's hard to tell without opening them (a risky business until next Tuesday when our trash is picked up), but one of them looks like it might be garbanzo bean curry...however, it can't be. I haven't made that in weeks

I was gonna say goat cheese and beets but Diana beat me to the goat "cheese". That stuff isn't cheese. I can't believe no one said beets. If you put goat cheese on a beet I would starve before I would eat it and I'll eat darn near anything. Toss the beets in Sherry.

At first I thought this was my MILs recipe....

I have a few leftovers from my Macrobiotic days I'd like to add:

miso
tempeh
natto

I also think a dash of Umeboshi (plums - dried and pickeled for over one year with sea salt) would add a salty "something".

Since I add flaxmeal to many things, that should also be included for the likity-split factor.

This thread is hysterical.

I'll take your goat cheeses and beets, add a white truffle oil viniagrette and some greens and have myself a nice lunch.

Seagrass I think Epoisses (sp?) trumps Limburger in stinkiness. My DS #1 tried some and he is about as scarred for life as after he saw some other non-food pictures here.

I see see proudmama got to the tarragon first, I'll add sage and lavender.

Grainlady I forgot about natto! Reminds me that this soup can have my uni!

Sherry, the kids didn't have much luck when they went hunting last night. But we just got back from doing a little dumpster diving behind the grocery store. It's Thursday and I find it's one of the best days to go snooping.

Here's what we found to add to the Poopy Stew:

~2 rutabaga's, just have to cut the soft spots out and remove some leaves
~3 bunches of parsley, probably equals 1 bunch by the time we remove the black stems
~partial bottle of oyster sauce
~several heads of garlic, they are rather dried up but will add some flavor
~ a bag of rice, might have some soy sauce that seeped in but that won't hurt
~2 really nice zucchini, only the ends are damaged
~unsold rotisserie chicken, I'll throw in 2 and keep the other two for another meal.
~3 containers of raw oysters, they smell a little off but you won't notice once they are added.

How long you going to let this stew cook? We may head over to the other side of town later and check the dumpsters there.

Oh wait, doesn't someone have some Jello? And a can or two of that really cheap store brand cream of whatever soup? That would add some "gravy" and the Jello would thicken it up a bit, add that lovely gelatinous goo texture that I so look forward to...

Cilantro, forgot the cilantro! I only keep it in the house to feed to my bunny who loves it, although apparently many people eat it, yuck! Um, I also found a block of salt pork in the back of my meat bin this morning, it's a bit slimey though.

Ok, how about some of my most hated foods to just stir in at the end (perhaps served as a garnish at the table?) -- ketchup and mustard! ICK!!!! Hate them but really wish I didn't...

If the stew needs depth & texture, perhaps some pork chitterlings would help. I think I would fry them crispy before adding - or maybe serve them on top as a garnish. They're especially good with curry, cumin, & overcooked green beens or dried black eye peas.
