Advice on repair or replace HVAC system

I live in Jacksonville Florida. I have a 12 year old Carrier system, that has a refridgerant leak on the coils inside the air handler. The leak is at one of the factory joints of the cooper tubing, and the tech says it is possible to repair for about $300, but would not recommend because it will not be relaiable. A replacement of the entire coil unit (the thing that looks like a car radiator) would be about $1100. He doesn't recommend this either as the entire system is so old. He says my best bet is to go with an etirely new outside and inside system, and that would be much more energy effient. So, my questions: 1) is the $300 leak fix a waste of good money? 2)would the $1100 replacement of the coils be a waste? 3) What brands have the best reliability...I see a lot of complaints about them ALL when I look around the internet. 4) What should I know that I will wish I knew?
