Need advice on replacing our HVAC system
Comments (24)Here are some features I think are important: - ability to set at least 4 temperature time periods per day - 7 day programing - temporary temperature override - true 2-stage control (if getting a 2-stage furnace/AC) - AC powered with battery back up - dehumidify on demand (if getting a variable speed furnace) I have the Infinity controller, here are some features which may not be present in other thermostats - static pressure reading - filter change alert - outside temperaure display - fault code display and logging - fan RPM display - maintenance reminder - installer diagnostic settings I believe the Trane TCONT900 is a good thermostat from what I have read. I don't see it listed on the Trane web site so I don't know if it is an older model. The XL900 seems to have the features you would want if you are getting a 2-stage furnace and AC. If you are getting the Infinity furnace then you need to get the Infinity controller. I own Carrier equipment and have been pleased so far with the comfort and performance. The Trane equipment is a good alternative....See MoreAdvice needed for replacement of HVAC System
Comments (16)please block out your name and address. I thought that 80% gas furnaces were not being sold in the north anymore. savings to upgrade to 90%+ offset costs to make this change in efficiency. not sure what date this goes into effect, but when the hvac industry makes this kind of change..its a big deal. doesn't often happen that they change the minimum efficiency that the law allows. the minimum efficiency for a/c for example changed from 10 SEER to 13 SEER because of the difference in efficiency. as energy raters we saw every rating the savings between 10 & 13 SEER. when the hvac industry makes this kind of minimum standard change..there is a good savings. use the rebate to offset costs between losing 20% of your heating costs to losing only 10% or less. with 96% your loss drops to 4%. has any company done a load calculation to correctly size the unit? has any company tested or even inspected duct work for duct loss? if you air seal the ducts and returns and invest in air sealing the house.. then the unit will perform better and your comfort will improve. utility costs will also be lowered. check with Resnet for an energy rater in your area to blower door test house & test ductwork. make repairs, test again. reducing air/duct leakage has a fast payback plus other benefits. best of luck....See MoreHVAC system advice, repair or replace
Comments (26)My current system has the Carrier thermidistat, that can monitor temp and humidity, as well control the HP and Furnace, or at least I think it can. I am not sure where the programming for switch points and such are in my current system, I was a lot more trusting back then. As far as the duct work I know the supply duct work was redone with the last system and increased in size greatly. The one contractor did check under the house to take a quick look at the ducts. The reason I was given for the high install price of just the HP and coil was that they would have to uninstall and re-install the furnace to perform the installation. Then it just became the cost of the new furnace while doing the work. I thought it was very high but the quote have all been what I thought to be very high. I know that I have been concerned about the sizing, as it seemed quite large. I have asked the one contractor about the furnace size and he is going to look at that. He did tell me that they usually just match the furnace to the HP, at the same size since the cooling is more critical here. Also, the furnace can modulate down to a lower capacity to save energy and keep the comfort at a certain level. I have a feeling that the contractor is frustrated with my asking lots of questions, but I try to be an educated consumer and this is turning out being a larger purchase that expected. I know that I have tried contacting 3 more contractors and they have not returned the emails or calls, it has been 2-3 days now. I am not sure how far out I should look for a contractor, Raleigh is about an hour away from me and not sure how many would be willing to travel for the job, or how responsive could they be if a problem arose. I appreciate everyone's insight and advice....See MoreIs my HVAC high limit switch working or not? Two HVAC pros said it is.
Comments (25)WHAT IS A HIGH LIMIT SWITCH? https://www.newcentralairconditioner.com/ The high limit switch in your gas furnace is a small part with two very important jobs. This switch plays a role in the normal operation of your furnace. Turning the fan motor on and off is the high limit switch’s main job. This is the role it plays in every cycle of your furnace’s normal operation. But that’s not the only thing that the high limit switch does. It’s also safety device that helps prevent your furnace from overheating. The high limit switch consists of a long temperature-sensing probe attached to a metal mounting plate. From the mounting plate, the switch is wired to the blower fan motor and to the gas valve. The switch is generally located just past the heat exchanger. This is so that it can detect the temperature of the supply air. In other words, the air that’s about to be blown into your home....See MoreDeb
