The Complete Idiot's Guide to "Creating an HTML 4 Web Page" talks about the first step is to enter text and save. It says, "not to format the document in any way (such as adding italics or centering paragraphs). Not only do you run the risk of having a browser choke on these extra formatting codes, but every Web browser on the face of the earth will completely ignore you efforts."

Are they saying the first step is to type the text without formatting>Save and then go ahead and add the formatting? They give the impression of each time an addition is made, it must be Saved. And not to do too much work without constantly Saving as you go.

I ask because I have the text in, but when the title is added it is not recognized on the browser (IE).

I think this author is more concerned with telling jokes than actual helping. The more I read this book, the more I am confused.

Hmm...sounds like a bunch of bull to me. What HTML editor are you using? I have only used Notepad and it has served me well. There are a lot of good sites online to learn how to make web pages. I really don't understand why you wouldn't format your text as you construct your page. I do save my work quite often, never know when you might have a crash or freeze. Do you have your web page uploaded so we could take a look and see what is going on?

Thanks for the reply Jean, I am using WordPad. No I am in the preliminary stages so far. I did 2 pages a year ago that were OK, but then decided not to use it as a business site and deleted. Can you imagine I can forget how to do this in a year? I am going back to "HTML Visually", the book I had success with. My garden site is "aided" for $7.95/mo. I want to do one completely from scratch, let me get into the "HTML Visually" book and see what is what. Thanks!

It really is the whole chicken/egg story all over again. When you say site built, do you mean site sanded and finished? When I sold hardwood, *we* preferred to go in after cabinets but before toekicks. This was mainly to protect the floor from the cabinets getting installed. In new home builds it was usually careless trades coming in after us that damaged the floors. Floors first, pros; --you can change base cabinets easier at a later date --the cabinets won't get dinged by the flooring install (and finishing equipment in site finished floors) --you don't have to deal with the sanding dust in your new cupboards (site finished) cons; --the floor is likely to get some damage with cabinet installation. You can do the final site finishing after the cabinets to hedge your bets. --you're using extra square footage of wood --you can't easily change your mind on the floor after the cabinets are in things to consider: if you install your cupboards first and run the hardwood just under the toekicks, you'll need to remember the 3/4" thickness of the wood when installing your cabinets. some people install their base and wall cabinets, do hardwood and THEN install the island. With small/midsized non-plumbed islands you can just lift and move them slightly to install underneath *if* you don't have multiple electrical coming up form the floor. HTH!

A network switch really isn't much different than one of these: Yes, it's grossly oversimplified but the concept pretty much holds true. You're just splitting the signal just likes one of these adapters splits the power. It probably don't much matter which switch you buy and frankly you might be do better with a router. A router is basically an advanced switch but you can use it as a switch too. They're far more common and therefore generally cheaper. You might look a eBay or Craigslist for used ones. As for cables, buy the cheapest you can find. Local brick and mortar stores are generally the most expensive places to buy cables. Online at Monoprice or Amazon is far more economical. I'll restate to make sure we're on the same page: You have an existing stud framed wall with the studs exposed. You want to add a new 2x4 wall perpendicular to the existing wall, but the new wall will butt into the existing wall in the middle of a stud bay. Correct? If you're asking about LAYOUT and where to locate the partition wall, do take into consideration all that will go into the shower: 1) the rough size of the shower pan itself. If a manufactured pan, look on the manufacturer's website to find rough opening requirements. 2) wall covering requirements? Cement board thicknes? Drywall thickness? the thickness of whatever you'll be covering the wall with. 3) Finish material: thinset plus tile for in the shower. Or prefab wall panel thickness is going a prefb route. Or wainscot thickness for outside the shower. etc, etc. Are you asking HOW to frame it? If so, I recommend adding a vertical 2x6 into the framing of the existing wall, cut it to fit between the existing wall's cap and sole plates, so it'll be the same length as the studs in your existing wall. Toe nail or toe screw the 2x6 in to the existing wall. With the 2x6 in place, frame your new 2x4 wall and butt it up against the 2x6. With the 2x6 being 5-1/2" wide and your 2x4 being 3-1/2" wide, you'll have 1" of 2x6 showing on each side of your new wall. That 1" of lumber can be used as a nailer for drywall of cement board, etc. Lemme get a drawing...the one below is from Rob Thallon's "Graphic Guide to Frame Construction". I described "Option B". I learned that lesson the hard way also lol!! Also, when I DID get samples the next time, I didn't paint a big enough space apparently and once the whole room was done it looks sooo much lighter than the sample had looked once it was everywhere and I wish I had went with the color up :(

WordPad is your problem. Use NotePad or another editor rather than a word processor. I'm surprised the book didn't tell you that! It's OK to format with spaces, but don't use the fancier things you've already mentioned within your HTML file.

Just to be perfectly clear here - this is all about the format of your HTML, not the format of your finished web page.

A word processor adds characters for formatting that are not visible to you, but can be seen by the browser.

Susan, as you stated, "to be perfectly clear here - this is all about the format of your HTML, not the format of your finished web page." Now I am really confused. What you stated I would imagine has something to do with the body appearing, but not the title. I am ready for the sofa for a long chat, or to give up. Can you recommend any online sites to help explain some of this? I have no idea how I managed this before?

Hi Jean, I have been going to IE> File > Open > Browse > index.html to see the results. The title of the page is not showing up. Plus the color I selected (FFFF99) is not correct. Is there another way to see the results? I think I know the HTML well enough, but getting started is hard.

I'm still not sure what you mean by "title". Do you mean it's not showing on the title bar in IE or on the page itself?

Sometimes each of us use different terminalogy trying to explain something. Not so easy to convey what we mean through the written word. :)

When you speak of the color, is that the color for your page background? It shows in my graphic software as a pale yellow. {{gwi:1540816}}

If you have a site to upload the page, it would give us a chance to look at the source and see what is going on.

Hope I'm not adding to the confusion... *LOL*

FFFF99 is appearing a very bright, medium-dark green. The title is my actual title for the web page. Only the body is showing on IE. The title is not included. I think I may have to go out back and chop wood for a few days until I am ready for more of this.

I'm not sure that this is good info or not but I downloaded Note Tab Light some time ago with the idea that I would learn to make web pages. I haven't learned yet -- but the software claims several awards and an HTML editor and as a good replacement for Microsoft's Note Pad. It is available from Fookes Software (Swiss), I think for $4.95. Its other versions cost more but have more features.
