BR-111 Triangulo vs Thin Wear Layer

Hello everyone! I'm currently getting BR-111 Brazilian Cherry Engineered wood put into my Condo. I'm debating on whether or not I should fork out an additional $2000 for the Triagulo or go with the "cheaper" thin wear layer 5/16" version. I know the Triangulo will likely ding and dent a lot less easily, but won't both still scratch and show discoloration similarly? Thanks for any advice and insight anyone can give me!

I debated myself between the Triangulo and the 5/16" thin wear -- when you look at both samples, the difference is quite clear. The thinner version is really just a very thin veneer -- if you got a really good gouge in it, it's possible that you could see the underlying (non-Brazilian cherry) wood. In addition, with the Triangulo, the wood layer is thick enough that you could get 1 or 2 refinishings out of it. That for me was the deciding factor.

As far as sratches and dings -- we don't really have any "dings", and this is after 4 years of living with it. We do have a handful of scratches (from moving very heavy furniture...whoops). I've found that using one of those wood-colored pens covers up the scratches well enough...you'd have to look pretty closely to notice them.

If you're looking to save money, you could always install the floor yourself. We did a floating install, and it was really quite easy.

The thinner wear layer is a sliced cut while the thicker wear layer will look richer and more like a solid wood floors since it is a sawn cut. I decided it was worth paying more for the Triangulo for the look of real wood and to be able to finish it in the future if I ever sell my townhouse and the floor was needed to be refinished.

I am choosing a painter right now and then my BR-111 Triangulo Brazilian Cherry floors will be installed by my installer who called today. I wish I could do the floors myself but I am alone with no one to help me and I hurt my neck, arms, and back in a car accident about 2 years ago that are still having problems.

Thank you rivkadr for the samples of the BR-111 Triangulo which made me fall in love and stop worrying about the color change.

Please note, our unfortunate experience with Br-111 just happened this past year 2013-current. We purchased expensive custom made wide plank engineered wood and paid over $12 sq ft from the current BR-111 (direct). At first, they tried to blame the problems on the wood being exotic, but after sending a video of the cracking that occurred on 100 % of the floor, they agreed it was a manufacturer defect and promised a full refund. This was back in January. It's now May and no refund. Very sad that the owner(s) of this company value money more than integrity. In life, I have witnessed what goes around comes around, and the individuals who have made the decision to withhold money will pay this money out one way or another. Perhaps not to myself, or yourself or even all at once, but rest be assured that any time dishonest money is earned, it washes out like water. It seems heartless that these people with families of their own (who happen to post all their wonderful Facebook events and news) do not have compassion on the customers who like them, only want the best for their families. We were planning on donating the refund to charity if we received it. Both my husband and I both agreed it would be right to do, so now they have not stolen money from a customer, they have stolen it from those who could have used it much more than us. Shame is just not powerful enough a word to put on this company.

We installed the Triangulo Engineered Amendoim on our slab foundation in June and we're very happy. I love the finish...it reflects light without being shiny. It's also very easy to care for and keep clean. Well, I think it's clean. It doesn't really show any dirt (light or dark), so it may just well be the perfect floor!

JFCWood, thank you for your input. I know that is what is bothering me about the Valenza that is is so expensive and despite samples from 2009 being so difficult to stratch or dent, I know that Armstrong is now manufacturing the product in Chinese/Tiawanese countries I was told when I called Armstrong up so I wonder if the quality control will not be so great. I have a home office so I wanted the commercial grade floor but now I am wondering if all wood floors scratch and to save my money and go with the 3.25" Triangulo. I have the 5" wide now that BR-111 was selling that got damaged by the pipe exploding on my water heater. I ended up not liking the long boards and the wider boards as it gave me less color variation in my home office. I just wish the 3.25" wide Brazilian Cherry Floors would be thicker as they are only 3/8th inch thick while the 5" wide are 4/8th inch thick. I love the sample I have of the Valenza as it is 5/8th thick with 4 MM of sawn cut wood on top. Maybe too much wood on top will act like a wood floor and expand and contract too much?

Annz, I am not sure how much longer I will be here. I bought this townhouse thinking I would live here for about 6 years but it has been 12 years and I could be here for many years. I just decided to get outside storage since buying a bigger place is not in my budget due to the cost of living in the location of my home that is where most of my clients are. The location is excellent and the office area and the fact clients do not have to walk into the rest of my home are step directly into my office is ideal. Since I chose tile in two small foyer areas where the doors leading to outside are, I don't whave to worry about the floor being too high in the living room, diving room and family room. My porcelain tile is 3/8th thick so going with that thickness for the wood will make the floors the same height but a 9/16th or 5/8th inch thickness will not be that much higher. Is it more comfortable walking on a thicker piece of wood due to the plywood?

The thin layer vs the triangulo - you can actually see a difference? I know the triangulo will likely be stronger/harder (as the br-111 site indicates), but is there really a difference in aesthetic or feel? I don't plan on being in my condo for more than 5-7 years, so I'm wondering if I should pay the premium for Triangulo or not. Thanks!

I definitely can see the difference in the sample displays in the stores and in my neighbor's home that has the cheaper thinner BR-11 floor that is not the Triangulo. But maybe it would not bother you but the difference took away the beauty of the wood to me. If you move and there are major scratched on the floor, it would be easier to fix on the thicker wear layer. Also I like the 3.25" & 5" widths better than the 3" & 6.25" width as well as the thicker board. I bought mine online from TrueHardwoods.com and I am having it installed either next week or the week after since I first have to paint and I have to make a decision on my painter in two days from the many I interviewed. It is amazing who calls themselves a painter.
