Soooo Whatcha doing for Paddys Day???

Family is coming for Corned Beef, Cabbage w/onions and bacon potatos soda bread and Shepherds Pie....Should be fun we will listen to Irish Music the girl will do some step dancing... but I do like when this holiday falls on a weekend!

I'm making green deviled eggs for Kim to take to work for the potluck there. Boiled dinner and maybe Irish Soda bread.

To be specific... today I am doing as little as possible due to the heat and my now premature old age, thanks to gardening. After ambitiously creating all new big flower beds around our house and yards, moving MANY tons of compost and mulch into these beautiful sweeping mounded beds, I realize too late that I was a short-sighted fool, since each summer my wife goes away for a month to visit her So California family. I realize too late that NOW I won't be able to go to my lake and drink beer with my brother, because all this beautiful new flora needs watering every day in this oppressive summer heat. Good bye Old Milwaukee and fishing. Hello hostas and coneflowers, plus hundreds of other perennials. I can ostensibly hide soaker hoses under the mulch and use those watering timers I bought last year... but it seems a bit risky to rush into another project when it's 95 degrees. Now when I go to our little neighborhood grocery store, all the nice ladies working there gather to make fun of me, and (baiting me) ask how my wife has been treating me through all my insanely ambitious garden and home projects that I have underway? I tell them that I pretend to be working but that I'm doing nothing more than softly singing negro spirituals and avoiding her. Now don't get me wrong about my wife of 37 years. We started dating when 16 years old, and I love her in a way that's sound as any forever bond or steely weld. I just wish she'd retire before 60 like me. She's a too organized 2nd grade teacher, and I'm a very bad boy it seems. As a result, she keeps putting my name on the refrigerator. Women... I swear they are fussier than an orchid at times, and meaner than a weed. Our yards now look fantastic and have commercial landscape lights... but Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen. jim Palmer

Wow! I got my box this morning and it sure brightened my day! Carol-what a fun box!! I loved it! Got up sick today and this brightened my morning! I got a green makeup bag with travel size brush, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and lotion in it! Perfect as always going to grandbabies and back for a night or so! 3 pair of earrings -I LOVE Them!! A large black cherry candle in a jar! Perfect! A green lizard "Iggy"-the beanie baby one! Go with my others. Shamrock body jewelry=very cool! St. Patricks Day armband with leprechaun on it. Bag of Almond Roca toffee, ton of mini Twix bars (one of my FAVS!!!!), a box of Liberty Orchards fruit and nut delights! YUM, YUM! Didn't you know I needed to start a diet-maybe next week! LOL! Green And Gold Bead necklaces with gold bell. Green M&M lady stationery-cool! And a pair of sip and wear glasses! If I can get some one to take my pic in them I will send it to you Carol and you can post! Haven't figured that out yet! So cute!And last but not least a ton of seeds! I really enjoyed the box. Marlene, I bought my stacked cake plates thru Target ONLINE (not in any stores) some time ago. Tho one time I did see them in a Ross or TJ Maxx. I added the sundae cup to the top, it was a dollar at Walmart. I discovered all this when I first joined our Forum many years ago, thru a gal named Judith who was an amazing decorator. Wish she was still here, maybe someday she'll come back. Some of her things are in our various holiday albums at least. I'm sure its not hard to find stuff to make your own stacked plates from scratch at thrift shops or yard sales. I saw somewhere online, a lady had put a small cloche on the top plate!! I may try that for Easter. I really liked the idea. I use to tell my kids if they ever drug me, kicking and screaming, into a nursing home...they darn well better bring my stacked plates and a cloche for me to decorate. Those things don't take up much room and give you a LOT of bang for your buck I think. Thanks for all the kind words, Gang. I wish my heart would get back into decorating, this felt kind of thrown together thanks to Lil Paddy pushing me to do it. But I have a feeling my BF is going to make sure I get all the Easter stuff out no matter what. LOL. hugs, Karen

Day After Thanksgiving . . . Whatcha Doing???

We camped. It was GREAT! We haven't been in a while. We hosted Thanksgiving, but ate early (noon) as my brother and SIL were going back to her parents to eat again that evening. Worked out well as we left late afternoon. We're within an hour of The Great Smoky Mts. national park and Cades Cove is one of our most favorite placess. Hubby had taken the camper up on Wednesday, so it was all set up. We took Thanksgiving dinner leftovers and had it all again Friday night. Took breakfast foods and snack type stuff (cheese/crackers, fruit, sliced ham, etc.) so other than warming everything Friday evening, I did no cooking. Temps were 60's in the daytime but quite chilly at night. Stars were amazing. We have heat in the camper and I had a set of flannel sheets and a warm blanket - so we were snug. We took lots of long walks/hikes,so hopefully worked off the extra calories. It was so nice to relax and enjoy the beautiful outdoors after a week of prepping and also dealing with a situation with my grandmother and her assisted living. Her roommate passed away and is has caused a bit of regression on her part. But anyway, it was just what we needed. Came home today and I'm in my jammies, taking it easy. House is clean, laundry is going and I'm just enjoying! We will decorate later in the week. Had thought to maybe put out the wreaths, greenery, etc. outside this afternoon but it rained earlier and still damp. Ann - I know you will enjoy tomorrow - have fun!! tina

Thanks okay, I know grammer doesn't count here, I just min-interpreted it. Actually, Cooking potatoes in bacon fat then crumbling it over the cooked taters sound pretty good! Maybe I'll make that for breakfast on St Paddys Day

I was going to make green bread but the idea was not very well accepted by my two boys! :-( Oh well, we don't do much for St. Patrick's Day so probably will just use avocado to make green tuna sandwich for little man's bento box.

We usually make Dublin Coddle.

DH won't be here, and I'm trying to decide if I'll make it for myself or just wait until next time he's home. I mean I LIKE it, but not enouogh to eat it for a week!

St Patrick's Day falls on my bunco night this year. So the hostess is making corned beef and cabbage etc for us all.

Did anyone see Desperate Housewives last night re: Leprechauns?? Very cute.

I made Dublin COddle a few years ago and though everyone ate it, they all said they would prefer the Corned Beef route so there you have it. They way I made it was Sausage, Ham, potatoes, cabbage, etc all sort of cooked together.

So this year we are back to the traditional CB & C, with parsnips, carrots, onions... Irish Soda Bread on the side, probably a few Black & Tans, a tot of Bushmills for me and Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes for dessert. I made those last year for the first time and they were a huge hit! Of course, the kids only get 1 LOLOLOLOL!

Just some Jameson or Red Breast for me.

It's Lulu's 5th birthday, so we'll have green cake and whatever she would like for dinner. I'm guessing chicken nuggets and french fries. Or perhaps macaroni and cheese.

My husband (who is 1/2 Irish) said he would just get an Amy's frozen dinner if I wanted to do corned beef. This is a guy who loves home-made corned beef hash. Go figure!

I decided to just make my corned beef and cabbage on Sat so I can babysit it. When I stopped to order my onion rye I got to sample the Publix Irish soda bread. Yum! They put white icing on theirs. One bite is all I get though.

I hate dieting!

I'm hosting my sewing group that day for lunch. I'm serving beef'n barley soup (might throw in some cabbage) with Grainlady's Oat Farls, plus some green hummous. Fresh fruit for dessert.

There's probably as many recipes for it as for soup, but the way we make Dublin Coddle is to bake sliced onions, sliced potatos, bacon, and broth with a few links of garlic sausage cooked into it. No cabbage in ours, which is just as well since DH can't eat that. We're not big corned beef fans.

I've seen that episode a number of times over the years.

It only became associated with the Irish when they moved to the United States.

I'm probably going to do a small corned beef tonight. That way I'll have cold corned beef tomorrow for Reuben Sandwiches!
