Please recommend search engine for very simple pages, non-commercial. Have found two free and naturally they don't list with the major engine services. Cost is a factor and may not be worth it to me as I did this for fun. Thanks for any input.

I gather you want to list your web site (pages) on a search engine. Is that a correct assumption?

If so, what you want to do is to get listed on dmoz. However to get listed your site probably needs to be informative and useful to others. If it gets listed there, then it will eventually get picked up by other commercial search engines like, AOL, Google, Hotbot, etc since they use dmoz database.

Take a look at the link below on how to add site to Open Directory Project (dmoz).

Hi dan4985. The more I learn, the less I know I know. Went to the suggested site and it is wonderful. The difficulty I have is in chosing a category because my pages cover a variety of subjects; i.e, crafts, computer help and sites pertaining to outer space. Also, using JamesS code for clickable links won't work in Earthlink's ClicknBuild program, it changed the format of the page instead. LOL I would love a critique from both of you but I am not posting the address here. My email is posted if either of you feel so inclined. Thanks ever so much.

poohbear please follow up, for additional clean up measures. note Drive C: : 232.88 Gb Total Space : 44.83 Gb Free Space : 19.25% Space Free : Partition Type: NTFS You're running out of free space! Windows needs 20% or more to run efficently. Please run OTL again. Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom paste in the following text between the stars ********************************************************* :otl FF - prefs.js..extensions.enabledAddons: download_YouTube_ghribi@gmail.com:1.0.0 @Alternate Data Stream - 182 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:408F95E5 @Alternate Data Stream - 122 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:C8B8CEBD @Alternate Data Stream - 121 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:C31F31E6 :Files ipconfig /flushdns /c :commands [CreateRestorePoint] [emptytemp] [purity] ************************************************************ Then click the Run Fix button at the top Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. I just typed the word "search" into the current engine, and this thread did not turn up on the first page of results. I also knew a basic no-earlier-than date, and that the original post contained the terms "garden*" (didn't know if it was "gardenweb" or "garden web"), and that one of the followup posts contained "google". I couldn't recall the posters name, but if available, I would have entered "gw*" in the field for original posters name. How about: 1. Search by title (any phrase or blank, wildcard would be helpful, ands and ors within the search) and 2. Search by individual post content (any phrase or blank, wildcard would be helpful, ands and ors within the search) and 3. Search by entire thread content. and 4. Search by thread originator (any phrase or blank, meaning it may not be the posters exact, complete name) and 5. Search by contributor (any phrase or blank, meaning it may not be the posters exact, complete name) 6. Return results by mm/dd/yy hh:mm of original post or time of last contribution by anyone or time of last contribution by above-searched contributor and 7. Choose recently started posts first or reverse or 8. Instead of sorting by post origination date, sort by contribution date. 9. Return titles only or return text like today Is it possible to search posts older than a certain date? I am not sure, because I do not have patience for the current search, but I believe that posts older than a certain date are unavailable?

I do not have any default browsers. They use up a ribbon across the top of my window and most of the time, I want that space for other things. When Bing sneaked in on a software update, I promptly uninstalled it. What I do is keep a list of addresses to popular search engines in my bookmark list. I put them all under one folder and named that folder something I could remember such as "Search Engines". I have a wide screen monitor so I keep the bookmark window open all the time. Anytime I want to search, I'll open a new blank window and click on the URL of the search engine I wish to use. Soon, the connection is made and I can conduct searches without closing my prime job. The search engine screen sits on top of my work window. I can toggle back and forth between the two windows. When I'm done with the search, I close that window. Currently, I have 10 search engines bookmarked. Two of those are my favorites.

I have sent you an e-mail, becca5, as I would love to see your website. I also used the link that Dan gave to list one of my websites. It will be interesting to see if they accept mine. They had quite a few pages similar to mine already listed.

Oh, MaryAnn, I'm sorry, I took the pages down. To explain, I used Earthlink's ClicknBuild and it is quite limited in what you can do, also, my pages were all links to other places (my favorites) and I was not able to make them clickable. In addition, because it was mostly links I didn't think the search engines would pick it up. Dan directed me to a Evrsoft program called lst Page 2000 which will give me a wide range of choices for my page, so it's back to the drawing board. becca
