My son's 35th birthday on Saturday

Hi everyone i haven't been here for a while still reading the posts which give so much comfort. It would of been my only son's birthday on Saturday and it was not a very good day for me. I lay in bed at night and ask why do these things happen. It will be the first anniversay of his death on the 27th of this month and i am not looking forward to it. I sometimes wonder how i got though this year and i just know it's because of all the prayers we are getting from the people that know us. My son's 2 boys came to visit this summer and it was so nice having them but difficult at the same time because he was not with them. Now I don't think so much of how he died but of the good memories of him ,but I still miss him so. Thank You everyone for listening and for all your encouraging posts. I remember when i found this site last year my body and heart were so numb but reading everyone's story was such a help knowing you knew exactly how I felt. Thank you again and take care Darlene

Hey, Darlene! Thanks for checking in with us. I'm glad that you were able to visit with your two grandsons this summer, but I can only imagine how sad it must have been to not have your son with them. I wish so very much that we had a little piece of Christin walking around amongst us. In that way, you are so very fortunate.
I will mark Darryl's anniversary on the 27th on my calendar and you will be in my prayers. I know that anticipation of all of the "firsts" is a frightening thought, but they are only as bad as you let them be. Try to do something positive like a memorial service or friends to come over or plant a tree donate something in his memory (even blood) or whatever you can think of that will give you comfort... something positive.
Don't go away. Keep in touch and let us know how you faired the first anniversary.

I agree...you are so fortunate to have your boys' children to love, even though their presence must be such a painful reminder that he is not there. I so wish I had my son's child to play with, but she died with him. My only other grandchild was born to our second son 2 weeks before the accident, and she has helped somewhat to fill the void., although there will always be a huge hole without our boy and his baby girl. I also agree that anniversaries are awful. I've tried to find something positive to do on their birthdays. I give books to the library at Millie's school on her birthday, and I gave money to Dave's high school on his birthday. This year, I'm giving money to our zoo to "adopt" a turtle. He loved the zoo, and turtles were his favorite animals, so we're donating money for a turtle's upkeep this year. I found it also helps to talk to Dave's friends who miss him, too. Talking about him with people who cared for him keeps his memory alive. My prayers are with you...you have a hard road to walk, and I know because I'm walking it with you.

it sounds like you're both feeling her absence (I've noticed that guys, simply because they don't have girlfriends to cry to, tend to respond to pain by being short-tempered) and no, after being on good behavior for two straight days and making sure I didn't rain on anyone else's parade- I'd have fallen over, dragged myself under the couch, and sat there in the dark, crying with the cats. hopefully, things will improve over the next few weeks. doing something 'for her' helps - work with a reading program 'for' my nanna (who left me her library) and garden 'for' my aunt, who was dreadfully talented with paints, but couldn't keep a spider plant alive. it does help.and staying busy yourself will help chase off the sharks with stethescopes.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. I have been going non-stop since I posted this, with 2 soccer games, a baby shower and a kid's birthday party on Saturday, and my son's First Communion and ensuing party on Sunday. Thankfully, my in-laws made the ham and a fantastic lasagna, along with eggplant fritters for the party yesterday. I made a ceaser salad with homemade ceaser dressing, Sol's honey rolls, shrimp cocktail, pineapple upside down cake and Amish Friendship bread. My mom made insalata caprese and a blackberry cobbler. And I purchased frozen Torta Stella from Costco as an additional appetizer. We had 17 adults and 4 kids. Everything turned out so tasty. Nothing quite like a homemade lasagna from an Italian mother-in-law. And when I get her recipe for those eggplant fritters, I'll be sure to share. They were inhaled! Nancy

Breezy - the toilet alcove is just a smidge shy of 31 inches wide. The narrowest code would allow in my area. It doesn't feel too cramped - but it's open at the end. If it were at the end of a long "tunnel" it probably would feel cramped. The niches. well, I love them. especially the lower one - helps with shaving!!! :-) originally we weren't going to have that tall metal tension shelf in there - products/soap in niches and along the "shelf/ledge" on the half wall. When the glass was installed, wiping it down was such a pain that we put the tension unit in there.

Thank you for your and your Mom's thoughtfulness in sending the heartfelt message of your Dad's passing from this world to the next, Andy. We send good thoughts and prayers for you and your Mom and the others in your family, plus others who cared deeply for your Dad, at this difficult time. May your hours together during the coming days, when you remember your father with gratitude and praise, build an even deeper feeling of love and trust among you. If there may have been some differences between some family emmbers, I hope that, rather than being exacerbated by the raw emotions of this time, that they may find healing. When we honour and respect someone who held an important place in our lives, one of the greatest tributes that we can offer is to choose to live various aspects of our lives in a similar fashion. Perhaps interpreted in different ways, relating to changes in the modern world ... I had never travelled over 30 miles from home until I was 17, just after World War II, when tires and gas were rationed. My farmer Dad, having bronchitis and asthma problems, moved about 1,600 miles from this area to farm on the Prairies, where he enjoyed 40 years of healthy living. While I went to University and seminary, and travelled by ship for 18 days out of sight of land, travelling to Korea to help clean up the mess after the Korean War, including helping some of hundreds of thousands of refugees get their lives back in some semblance of order. When I told Dad that I was considering such, and he said that it seemed so far away, I referred Dad to his credo that when our neighbour was having trouble, we went to help, which partly motivated me. I have often heard family members say, at a gathering when someone had passed away, that it seemed as though the only time that the family got together was when someone married, or died. On Saturday I attended the 110th reunion of my father's family, with about 100 present and within a couple of weeks travel to Saskatchewan where my retired farmer brother will host a reunion of upward of 100 of Mom's family on what was Dad's farm. And I'm hoping to visit a few KT members along the route through MI, WI, MN and ND. Again, the hearts of many here at the KT, as you have seen above, go out to all of you in your family at this time, while you remember your Dad's life with thankfulness, and mourn your loss, together. My mother's first anniversary is September 18. I am going on a trip to Greece, leaving tomorrow and returning on the 18th. Not that I will NOT be thinking of her, but I wanted to try to associate that awful time with some pleasant memories to look back on. And plus my mom would want me to go, of that I am certain. So in a way I feel like I'm honoring her by continuing to live my life and do the things that make me happy.

My mom's birthday is the 21st of this month. I'm not really sure how I'm going to get through that day and I'm dreading it. This is the first "first" since she died. Meaning that this is the first real date of significance and I'm hating the thought of it.
Please know that I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers as the 27th approaches.
