They have only recently found out that sometimes steroids can cause cataracts. I had them and I will always wonder if it was because I had to take prednisone for asthma. The surgery is a breeze. Of course, things can go wrong even in getting a even a toe nail removed, but this is really considered very low risk surgery. It should be done in a hospital or clinic Operating room that has been specially set up for eye surgery. It takes only a few minutes. Your total time in the hospital will probably be less that 2 hours. I didn't even have to take off my clothes or shoes. You will be put into a very slight "sleep." You will need someone to drive you home and since you will be very sleepy, it's a good idea idea to have someone with you. You will need eye drops every few hours for about a week. If you can do it yourself, fine, if not, someone will have to do it for you. As far as your eyesight afterwards, it will be as good as it was before the catatracts developed. You may not even need glasses. You are going to be suprised at how much improvement you have.

The surgery is really simple, isn't it? As I mentioned above, I had both my eyes done last December. I have monovision -- one eye for distance and the other for closer. I've had a hard time adjusting to it and if I were to do it again, I would go for the very best distance vision and wear readers at the computer or when reading. I had to get glasses to help "even out" my distance vision. I was hoping I would not have to wear glasses after the surgery, other than readers. The glasses I got are bifocals. I can actually get by okay without the glasses, but I do feel a little eyestrain and slightly off balance. I also have to have the YAG laser procedure as there is some clouding resulting from the surgery. That will happen in May. Almost everyone I know who got simple monofocal lenses for distance is very happy with their result. I wish I were one of them. I would NEVER get the Restor multifocals. Too much risk. My night vision is greatly improved and I am happy with that.

HU - I had my right eye done at the end of Jan 2018 (the left done last April). I still see some flares in the right from my outside flood light (that I turn on when I take the dog out). I go in next month for a 6 month check up and plan to ask the doctor about it. I quit most night driving numerous yrs back. I decided I didn't need to do that anymore and with the crazoid drivers here in AZ and I just plan around it. I do sometimes go to the W down the road in the evening and it's dark out when I come home - but I stay on my back roads and off of the HWY where the nuts are...I have no problems with that. I have no restrictions on driving tho - just my own preference not to get into the craziness at night. I did hear or read recently that there are glasses available now that do away with the flare / glare of lights from other cars, street lights etc. Don't know who makes them or how much they are tho. something to look into if the streams/flares continue. And be sure to let your doctor know about them. To others who might be interested, I found the pre-op preparation the worst. that was me knowing I wouldn't drive for a few days, shouldn't bend or lift either so I prepared things around the house so I wouldn't need to. Turned my gal water jugs into half gal and sat them up higher (for ease of filling my counter water filter). Same with dog food - put into a few smaller containers to use those few days and prepared some meals to have in the fridge / freezer so I wouldn't need to do that either. I normally slept on my left side, so that part worried me some, but I had no problem sleeping on the right side for a few nights. I find now that I more often sleep on the right side since that time. I'm now a bi-side sleeper! and I can even sleep on my back. I just took it easy for a few days after each surgery and all was fine. but I am so glad it is over! I do have glasses I wear while on the computer or reading, but don't need them for TV anymore and can read print on the screen (like news prog or shopping channels).

It's me again..... I had the cataract surgery a week ago on ONE eye! Couldn't believe how the pre- surgery prep that morning took longer than the 10min. surgery itself & I was home in 3 hrs.! No, I didn't have the eye covered at all but did use the plastic eye covering while sleeping for a few nights to protect the eye in case I tried to rub it while asleep. I was surprised (& a bit disappointed! ) though that I didn't immediately see the drastic change as I walked out of surgery that so many had described- but guess my vision wasn't as impaired by the cataract as others had. Yes, the two different drops are not fun and they decrease gradually over the course of a month- & then I will have it to do over again for the other eye ... and then, go for a regular eye exam to be fitted for glasses to correct for the regular vision problem I had before the cataracts! I do want to wear the glasses all the time & not have to fiddle looking for them when I want to read something! My brother-in-law couldn't put the drops in his eye after surgery.. as each time he got close to the eye, it would involuntarily SHUT!!! .... so his wife had to administer the drops to his eye as he held it open! I read that as generations now live longer, that it is almost a 100% chance that everyone will develop cataracts, & in the sunny southwest: pterigiums, as Nature tries to protect the eye from the sun's rays. Thanks for all of your thoughts & encouragements ... the first surgery was a 'breeze' & glad I decided out of the cheaper ('two for the price of one' by my insurance) but ?riskier surgery (I have had herpes eye infections in the past!! ) -Vieja
