My lenses were over and above what my insurance would pay, too, in order to correct for severe astigmatism as well as my very serious myopia. My doctor was genius.....he corrected one eye just a wee bit less than perfect, which allows me to see near and far; I can read all but the tiniest print without readers and even apply my makeup! There is no way that I could be happier with the results. Even after two years, I still find myself groping for my glasses when I wake up in the morning, lol. The surgery was such a blessing for me. One thing that I had to deal with, especially for the first several months, was uncomfortable dryness. I was encouraged to use a gloppy gel at night, and a couple of different kinds of drops during the day. I still use lubricating drops a couple of times a day.

Thanks all for your feedback, it's great to hear real life experiences. I tried monovision contacts in 2007 and was not able to tolerate them per my paper chart and ophthalmologist yesterday. I do not remember this but he read his note to me. I have worn multi focal contact lenses for many years and realize the trade offs that are made with them. Either distance vision is good or close up--take your pick. I also know that the prescription that the doctor thinks will be the best fit isn't always the one that the vision is best with. So that scares me in having something implanted that may not be the exact correct lens. It was good to hear that so many of you opted for a single vision lens. If I did not work basically 13 hour shifts in a very dry hospital environment I would be able to wear my contacts the majority of my waking hours. On my off days I am able to wear them for 6-12 hours. I do have one eye cauterized and a tear duct plug in the other for the dry eyes. My glaucoma drops irritate the eyes as a side effect also. I would love to be able to get a pair of glasses that did not have thick expensive lenses in them. I have always looked younger than my age and the younger RN's think I'm lying when I tell them how old I am, it also helps I was mid 30' s when I had my daughters. I was legally blind with immeasurable eyesight, so about 30 years ago, I had RK done to both eyes and within 7 minutes and 9 little slits in each eye, I was able to see better than 20/20...no glasses and I was thrilled! Being rid of those “pop bottle” eye glasses was the best money I have ever spent! When I developed cataracts, I did go to a specialist who was very familiar with RK eyes to have them removed because the cataracts grew into the slits. They did do a lens exchange in one eye since sight was not 20/20, but it was a simple surgery. If I have a good light, I do not need any glasses to read but keep readers handy. I do not drive at night anymore because I have the starting of MG and Glaucoma and oncoming lights cause a halo effect. But at 78, that is a minor problem .

I had mine done last month. I requested having it done without sedation anesthesia at all. He compromised with my request by having an having a line set for an IV just in case something went sideways. I didn't need it. I wanted to not have to have that possible extra day of tiredness or fogginess after sedation. I was able to drive myself back the next day for my checkup and I was back on my horse the next. I wore close fitting sunglasses to ride until I was done with the drops to avoid dust and debris but other than that it went great. Got to agree you need to be prepared for all the weirdness of lights and sensation that go on during the surgery but I focused on "how interesting'' so I wouldn't get anxious. Glad your surgery went well. The scratchiness will get better soon. Having to fit the drops into a busy schedule is a bit bothersome but no biggie. If you have floaters you will see more of them and at least for me the lights were a bit to bright and bluish for the first week or so. Now all I deal with is great vision and those pesky tiny floaters I didn't notice so much before. LOL I chose the lens that gives me distance and moderate vision. I need to see distance for trail riding and moderate for my phone, rigging and day to day fiddling with stuff. Still need readers for really close up vision or small print. But I can read my phone easily and I can count the leaves on trees at a distance. I love it. My other eye doesn't need the surgery yet but I will get the same lens for it. Never had Lasik on that one so the risk of side effects or a less desired outcome is even lower.. I was warned about possible halos, especially since I had previous Lasik done on that eye. But other than a little bit more light sensitivity it turned out great. No noticeable glare or halos other than the ones that some newer lighting types have a bit for almost everybody if they bother to notice.
