Hi Alanis, I'm in zone 6b but we seem to have had one of the worst winters for daylilies in quite a while. The weather went from hot to very cold during later winter - back and forth - with some extra wetness too I believe. There wasn't too much complete death of daylilies but a good bit of loss of the large fan on the crown with subsequent smaller tiny fans coming out around the sides of that same crown. Hopefully that is what will happen with your plant. Presuming you planted it at the correct depth originally, you should leave it alone and watch it for a while. I think your cat should see an eye specialist - I am sure your vet could make the referral/appointment for you. We have been to the one in Toronto, Ontario so hopefully there is one located in your area. Our cat came down with primary glaucoma - very fast - and we got him to the vet's fast. Eyes are somewhat specialized (my husband has just been to heck and back with his) - so I would really suggest an expert's opinion. If you have other pets, they may not be able to have access to your cat when meds have been applied. You will need to ask for the best/worst case scenarios. Hope all goes well.

The sensors are a safety feature. The unit is designed not to allow the door to close automatically unless the photo circuit is complete (i.e. sensor transmitter is connecting with the sensor receiver). As you probably know the door will fully close using the wall switch as long as you hold the button until the door is completely closed. The logic for this system is embedded in the program on the logic board and is specifically designed not to be easily bypassed. In fact I'm not aware of any site where a procedure to bypass the sensors is available. Short answer is: Yes, the system will only work with the eyes connected. You need to get some replacement sensors and restore the system for your remotes to work properly. Hope this helps.

That is an example of why diabetes is the leading cause of blindness. Keep that sugar level in check! What happens is the very tiny blood vessels in the eye burst or leak due to the sugar levels and the blood in the vitreous part of the eye makes it not clear but clouded with blood, if it happens to much it can cause blindness. Blood gets very thick when the numbers are high much like syrup and it just can't flow through the tiny vessels in the eyes and brain. You were extremely lucky if you don't have permanent damage. Diabetic retinopathy is definitely something to try hard to avoid. Having a medical eye exam should be performed at least yearly for diabetics.
