Text in IE vs Netscape

I have a website for seniors who write little stories. I have put up a number of these and the one I'm working on now is giving me a problem.

I am using jester for the font and 4 and 3 for font size.

The font is not being read in either IE or Netscape and the text size is not being read in Netscape.

If any of you can explain this and tell me how to correct it, I would appreciate it.

TIA,

Sue

When you specify a font for a web page you have to remember that people who look at your site MUST have the specified font installed on their computer, otherwise default font for the browser (user may be able to specify a default font). So when you use a font like Jester, I doubt that many people will have the font, so most people will see it in Times New Roman.

I assume that when you say Netscape, you are referring to version 4.x or lower, not version 6 or higher (totally different browser, only name is the same). As for the size, I suspect that it is honoring it, but it may appear that it is not. This is one of the problems with trying to format web pages for different browsers. Size 3 may mean one size in IE and another in Netscape 4.x and another in Netscape 6. Also size 3 may be different on Mac verses PC.

Good thing about your page is that font is changeable by the user (I hate going to sites which uses tiny fonts with bad contrasting background and can't change the font size using view/text size), so just think of size being relative size to each other on the same page and not worry about with it actually renders on a users browser. However since this site is for seniors, I suggest that you increase the size to 5 for header and 4 for main text. Better yet, use h1 tags for the heading and leave off the font size for the body of the text or use +1.

"I am using jester for the font and 4 and 3 for font size."

Do not specify font OR text size in HTML code. That gives the visitor's browser a chance to display the page with the fonts they prefer, and the size they need for legibility. When I hit a page like yours, my browser takes my already large fonts and makes them even bigger! .

"The font is not being read in either IE or Netscape and the text size is not being read in Netscape."
"Jester"? Unless I have that installed on my system, I'm not going to see it.

The hard part of making pages for the web is giving up the desire to make the pages have a certain "look". Unless you have a truly captive audience, you have no idea what their settings and installed fonts will be ... so don't even bother.

Not always. C:\Temp and C:\Windows\Temp are often used for temporary files used by programs that are running. C:\Temp is a holdover from DOS/Win 3.x days and it's unlikely to find a program still using this folder. "Well behaved programs" clean up after themselves and delete their temporary files from the temporary directory. If a program crashes (even a well behaved one) it will leave files in the temp directory. Some programs are like those coworkers who use the microwave and don't wipe it out afterward--they don't bother cleaning up after themselves. At any rate, you end up with a mixture of abandoned files in the temp directory. You can usually delete any that are from before your last reboot, but you can't just delete everything, because some of the files may still be in use, even if they aren't currently open and stopping you from deleting them. Deleting a file that is still needed by a program would be unfortunate.

There are a few ways to do this, but they are ALWAYS a bad idea on the web. The web is not a printed publishing medium where you control the final output. There are a million variables including browser, user's eyesight, computer, operating system, location, etc... If you fix the size of the font, then a user with a high resolution display can't easily make it bigger, and will leave. To best get your message out there, it's essential that you don't try to limit your audience; not everyone uses Internet Explorer on Windows. Think _very_ carefully before ever fixing a type size, or really using any other display tricks that will harm the user experience. If you must choose a size, then specify it using relative units so your reader can easily change the size if it ends up too small for them to read.

Form's text box size wrong in Netscape? help?

People at other forums sent me the following. Perhaps this will help for someone: I found thet following explanation at http://www.saila.com/usage/tips/?print#textfield. He has some other good tips too. Here's what he says: Unfortunately, both Netscape and Internet Explorer display form fields using different criteria. Because, Netscape uses the browser's monospaced font to render text in a text field, and IE uses a variable font  generally sans-serif typeface  it's best to optimize the box for Netscape first. Once you've done that, use a style declaration (which older Netscapes will ignore) to stretch the box for Internet Explorer. Here are three examples. RIGHT CLICK WITH YOUR MOUSE AND CHOOSE "VIEW SOURCE" TO SEE THE SOURCE CODE FOR THE THREE BOXES. A plain Netscape 4.7 text input box: An IE 5.5 text input box, styled to match the size of the Netscape box (the padding helps vertically align the text): An IE 5.5 text input box, styled to match the size and look of the Netscape box (the border and font simulate Netscape's): -------------------------- Another guy suggested this not great solution: "I decrease the NS size by using the style "font-family: new courier" for input boxes. But it doesn't decrease them as much as I'd like." -------------------------- Another guy says: "I have the same problem with text input fields in Netscape 6. Text fields are inside table cells and Netscape makes them approximately 1/3 too long no matter what the cell widths are. I use a self-declared css class in which I have declared the font sizes and types. The field size can't be delared in stylesheet because the html for input fields is generated by an xsl-template which should be able to be used for different-sized fields. It's a big problem because I have a very limited space in the frame." -------------------------- In my own case, I took a not-great dummy approach. The problem with over-sized NS 4.7 boxes only occurred when I was using Styles. Without styles, the box behaved in NS. So I stopped using styles for that page. It made some other stuff look not so hot, but I was willing to sacrifice to get those NS boxes the right size. Here is a link that might be useful: tip on text box size and other tips

Oy!!! Windows Vista and IE 7

Cynic- I was searching forums to read what people were saying. I've since read more. A number of people were saying their system crashes all the time with Opera. Then others agreed and advised against mixing the too. The funny thing or frustrating thing, mine is freezing up constantly with IE7. I've only been using it for three days now, but was also having that problem recently before the switch. I have DSL and, as of three days ago, have a brand new and MUCH faster desk top. So I'm not really sure what the problem is. My connection seems fine. Of all the reading I've done (which really isn't all that much) there really seems to be an equal number of people that either prefer Opera or FF. With a scattered few that still really like IE7 (compared to IE6). I'll keep doing my homework. Thanks :o)

While you are deleting the FONT and SIZE tags ... delete the font COLOR tags too.

If this site is for seniors, they need all the help you can give them.
The highest legibility for most people comes from black or dark blue text on white or a pale yellow background - others like white text on a blue background. If you force the font color toblue, the browser shows blue text oin blue background and it becomes invisible.

center font face=ÂJESTER color=Â#0099ff size=Â4Â

If that was a title, use the right tags : Heading tags (H1, etc).

And whatever tool you are using is NOT putting in proper paragraph marks ... It's one giant paragraph with forced line breaks.

You can embed the font in the HTML, and then it doesn't matter whether the client computer has the font or not.

Here's a tutorial that I found:

That still doesn't help the issue of the page "designer" forcing their idea of what is readable onto an audience who may have vision problems.

Are you presenting information to as wide an audience as possible, or being artsy for those without visual impairments who happen to use the same browser and defaults as you.

Pixels are NOT paper! Don't try to use them as if they were.

Dan,
lazygardens,
I am aware of some of the vagaries of the different browsers. These stories are given to me by a group of ladies, some of whom are trying to learn HTML. The one in question has errors which I will take care of. They want to see the stories in a variety of fonts and colors.
My quandary is, since I have 80 some stories on this site, that this is the only one that I have had this problem with.

Toothpick,
I have bookmarked the tutorial and in the next day or two will read over it and see if that will be feasible for me.

lazygardens,
Love your pic of the baby hummingbird!
Thanks to each of you for your input.
