Form's text box size wrong in Netscape? help?

I've got a site built that works great on IE, but has problems in Netscape. One of the most frustrating problems is that in Forms my text input box in Netscape does not pay attention to the size setting. For example suppose I write within my form text field:

input type="text" name="occupation_comment" size="35" value"engineer"

In IE this works nicely and the input text box is 35 characters long. In Netscape the box is approximately 65 characters long and destroys my layout. Any ideas how to make Netscape behave itself? Thanks very much, Rob Peters.

hmmm,.. that is strange. Never heard of the input-tag not properly displayed by Netscape. Which browser-version of NN are you using? Do you use style-sheets for the style of the input-tag (that can be a problem in NN and MSIE). Is the input-tag placed inside a table-cel?

Perhaps you can post back the link to the site the shows the problem.

I have the same problem with text input fields in Netscape 6. Text fields are inside table cells and Netscape makes them approximately 1/3 too long no matter what the cell widths are. I use a self-declared css class in which I have declared the font sizes and types. The field size can't be delared in stylesheet because the html for input fields is generated by an xsl-template which should be able to be used for different-sized fields. It's a big problem because I have a very limited space in the frame..

Re houseplants: most spoiled foliage is caused by physiological issues, over/under-watering, oedema, nutritional toxicities/ deficiencies, light levels, ...... with subsequent populations of fungi acting as opportunists as opposed to acting as causal agents. In this thread, oedema, a physiological disorder, is the main actor. Dead animals don't cause vultures, but they do provide a reason for vultures to congregate. IOW, lesions caused by physiological disorder often provide the consistently moist conditions for a period lasting long enough to ensure incubation and germination of fungal spores. This isn't to say that fungal conditions do not commonly appear in plants as pioneer pathogens, only that evidence of physiological disorder is far more common than direct evidence of pioneer populations of fungi. Plant pathologists often describe the disease process using a 4-sided figure called the disease tetrahedron (think “pyramid – 3 sides + the bottom/ base”). Each side of the tetrahedron represents an essential part of the infection process. There must simultaneously be a virulent pathogen (capable of infecting the plant) that is genetically capable of recognizing its host. Either the environment must be conducive to the development of the pathogen, or the pathogen must be able to stress/weaken the plant. The 4th requirement is the time required for diseases to develop and spread. Whenever conditions are such that any one (or more) of the 4 requirements is missing from the equation, there is no immediate threat. Since the best medicines are prophylactic, the grower who makes sure plants are healthy and not stressed is ahead of the game. Biotic diseases are better able to overcome the natural defenses of plants weakened by stress that occurs when the plant is forced to deal with cultural conditions near, at, or beyond the limits the plant is genetically programmed to deal with. Water uptake and therefore nutrient uptake is energy driven, i.e. it takes energy to absorb water and nutrients, and the roots need oxygen to turn the carbs the plant makes (its food) into energy - just like you do. When your plants wilt while the soil is still damp and the problem persists more than a day or 2, you can be almost 100% certain it's a root problem - probably related to excess water retention and the dearth of oxygen that comes along with it. Roots are opportunists - they don't/can't "go looking" for water, air, and nutrients, they simply grow where conditions are favorable ...... and don't grow where they aren't. In your case, the roots are probably growing deeper into the pot when the water supply is at its lowest, then dying back again when you water. The cycle of death and regeneration of roots not only impairs root function, it's very expensive in terms of energy outlay as well. What it takes to regenerate roots killed by a lack of air might have been spent on things more productive - like an increase in plant mass, blooms, fruit ...... Your soil choice has a very significant impact on how easy/difficult success is going to be, and on how wide the margin for grower error is. My take on what constitutes a good soil, at a minimum, is one you can water to beyond the point of saturation, i.e. until at least 15-20% of the total volume of water applied exits the drain, carrying accumulating salts with it, this, without the grower having to worry about root rot or impaired root function. In most cases, the inability to water correctly also prevents you from being able to institute a nutritional supplementation plan that works well because nutrient ratios quickly become skewed if you can't hit the 'reset button' by flushing the soil regularly. Dennis is right about tight little root balls, too. If I get sets that have congested roots, I rip the bottom half of the roots off the plant and use as nylon pick to tease the remaining roots apart before the set gets planted. I also remove the lower leaves of the sets and plant very deep if in a pot, and deep and at about a 30* angle if they get planted in the ground. Often, roots allowed to remain in a tight little wad end up staying in a tight little wad with the plant suffering for it, and that's something you want to avoid. Roughing up the roots actually sends chemical messengers to the rest of the plant, telling it it needs to direct energy to the root mass. Plus, the closer roots are trimmed to the stem, the more juvenile and vigorous they are (look up 'ontogenetic age'), so make sure the roots are going to be able to easily colonize your soil mass by correcting congestion before planting and using an appropriate soil. Yeah, I've did without the search bar before too. Set my homepage to Google or whatever. And I've combined the menu bar, navigation, address bar and even bookmarks on my netbook to gain space. The reason I used Classic Theme Restorer was to put tabs back on the bottom, square them off, get my refresh icon out of the address bar and... I forget what else. :) Have fun and good luck.

HOLD YOUR GROUND and YOUR REMAINING BALANCE. It's great that they had fancy measuring tools, but if they don't transfer that right in fabrication - then the tools are not that helpful. (Or if fabrication can't execute) Telling you your cooktop isn't square is very annoying. It's even more annoying because I am pretty sure tey would not have tried to deploy that to your GC (assuming he's male) or your husband. Agree - measure it corner to corner and dispel that myth immediately . I mean what are the chances that a mass produced, engineered and factory built appliance is not square but the counters that have a variety of problems are "perfect"? People that say crap like this in front of homeowners (and then don't go over and measure themselves...) need some accountability. Right now, 40% is their accountability. My counters were measured by hand (me and DH), submitted to the granite company, their lead fabricator came out, validated them, took a sample of the island pop ups and took the template of our induction top and sinks back with him - and created perfect tops. (And both the cooktop and the island pop ups are flushmount) . 3 sinks, 2 faucets, soap dispensers and bookmatched island. The faucet error they made is a rookie mistake - especially since they were the ones installing a full depth 4" splash! (It may have still been tight to the sill, but much less so if they moved the sink forward. And yes - a narrower front rail is more fragile - but it's doable. There is no excuse for any of these issues - they are all their problem and they ALL should be fixed. That is likely to mean new material.

Not that this is a helpful answer, but lots of stuff that works fine in I.E. doesn't work fine in Netscape. Netscape parses tables differently, doesn't handle a lot of the script well, etc.

Sorry I can't help you but I wanted to declare that I am having the same exact problem. I hate Netscape. It always gives me problems. I posted a message today regarding table borders that I hope someone can help me with.

But as for the form problem with Netscape ... I would love to know if you found anything, Rob.

People at other forums sent me the following. Perhaps this will help for someone:

I found thet following explanation at http://www.saila.com/usage/tips/?print#textfield. He has some other good tips too.

Here's what he says:
Unfortunately, both Netscape and Internet Explorer display form fields using different criteria.

Because, Netscape uses the browser's monospaced font to render text in a text field, and IE uses a variable font Â generally sans-serif typeface Â it's best to optimize the box for Netscape first.

Once you've done that, use a style declaration (which older Netscapes will ignore) to stretch the box for Internet Explorer.

Here are three examples. RIGHT CLICK WITH YOUR MOUSE AND CHOOSE "VIEW SOURCE" TO SEE THE SOURCE CODE FOR THE THREE BOXES.
A plain Netscape 4.7 text input box:

An IE 5.5 text input box, styled to match the size of the Netscape box (the padding helps vertically align the text):

Another guy suggested this not great solution: "I decrease the NS size by using the style "font-family: new courier" for input boxes. But it doesn't decrease them as much as I'd like."

In my own case, I took a not-great dummy approach. The problem with over-sized NS 4.7 boxes only occurred when I was using Styles. Without styles, the box behaved in NS. So I stopped using styles for that page. It made some other stuff look not so hot, but I was willing to sacrifice to get those NS boxes the right size.
