Although it is true that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross died this past week, I found this to be a cute joke:

I was reading my morning paper, and saw that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author of "On Death and Dying" had died.

I couldn't believe it. It made me so mad.

I thought that I would give up my morning coffee if only it weren't true, and I was so sad.

But finally, I finished my coffee and went to work.

That's cute. I didn't realize that she had left this past week. I do believe that some people believe that others can get through these stages almost that fast. Obviously, they haven't lost some one who they truly love, yet.

Yes, I too heard of her passing.. I thought, how ironic... just when I am learning of these steps.. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author, passes away.. how sad. May she rest in peace...

I love doing things for my husband. He takes care of me. I serve him. Although he serves me more! I stay at home, we decided on that when we had kids. Although if I did work I could make as much money as him. I'm much happier being taken care of and he's much happier taking care of me. He's my best friend and I am his. When I think about all the stomping around he does in dirty shoes, etc... I think would I want to be married to a man who is cleaner than me? Would I want to be married to someone who concerns themselves with what colors I want in the bathroom? Would I want a man who takes more time on his hair than I do? A resounding NO, so I am much more easy going about the heavy footsteps..they're men they walk heavy! I think if someone is thinking about getting married, make sure you marry the right person...and if you marry the wrong person, you have no right to complain. You married him. I realize this is the marriage forum and as such it is a place to release some frustration) but don't make the mistake of striving with your mate. When you marry you are putting yourself under this man's authority and you better be sure he won't abuse that! We need to remember that this man is not our opponent, not our foe, not someone to strive with. He's our other half. (Maybe our not so clean other half) but a part of us nonetheless. Marriage isn't 50/50! Sometimes it's 1/99. But things aren't always fair and Love is not a feeling it's an act of your will. Do you look forward to seeing your husband at the end of the day? Do you wait for him at the door? Do your kids wait for him at the door? Does he rush home after work to see you? Does he talk well about you to his coworkers? Oh life can be so wonderful with an attitude adjustment...believe me. Men love to spoil you when you think they're the greatest thing in the world. I'm not kidding! I'm mostly vegetarian. I don't much care for meat, don't like to digest it, and don't like the taste. When I do eat meat it is poultry or fish. I use bacon occasionally as a flavoring, more often pancetta or proscuitto. My "problem food" is evil cheese. I just love the stuff and can't get enough of it. Cheese has some kind of addictive chemical in it I read. I have to work really hard to limit my consumption of cheese. The kinds I like are full of saturated fat. I do mix the fatty kind with lower fat kinds to try and mitigate some of the damage. I have no heart or cholesterol problems, and have been in generally good health my whole life. I have fairly decent genes. But I think the main issue with eating for health is to eat a balanced diet. It does no good to eschew red meat and then eat tons of sugar and fatty junk foods, which is what I see some young "vegetarians" doing. And these sugary drinks also are terrible for your health. I would be much more concerned about someone eating lots of sugar and junk foods than occasional red meat or eggs. I think that is what does people in, a diet of very little fruit or vegetables, and high in the saturated fat, including bacon, sausage, etc. I don't see a problem with maybe two strips of bacon if you're eating it with whole grain waffles topped with fresh fruit and yogurt. But that's now how most people eat. They eat processed foods. Also, a huge culprit in our national heart disease epidemic is lack of exercise. We lead such sedentary lives that it's almost impossible to control one's weight just with diet. I would say it's not beef per se that is killing us, it's how we raise the beef, how we cook it, and how much of it we eat, and what else we eat (or don't eat) along with it. For most of time, red meat was an occasional treat, and sausage was used as a flavoring for potatoes or beans, and it was a struggle to get ENOUGH calories for folks, not what we're facing today. Most people ate some kind of grainy gruel every day, not the rich dishes that have survived in the cookbooks and literature. My dad's four main food groups are meat, fat, sugar and white carbs. He always goes shopping and lays in a supply of junk food when he comes to visit me. Also suggests that we go out to eat all the time. Once Christmas I cooked and ate like he likes just to keep the peace. I felt really bad after a week of it. Poor sleep, and generally sluggish with mild digestive upset all the time. Of course I guess one's body does kind of "adjust" over time. Anyway, dad had been plagued by digestive problems all his life, and has clogged arteries, yet for whatever reason, cannot change his eating pattern, even though it makes him suffer. He's kind of like an alcoholic. He thought he could get away with it when he was younger because he was an athlete and not overweight. He's still only a little bit overweight, but has terrible acid reflux along with colon and artery problems. Shy of genetic conditions, I would say my dad is fairly typical of what's out there. BF's co-workers are dropping like flies now that they are in their late 50's and sixties. They all smoke, drink and eat like my dad, and are overweight. I would say eating a lot of red meat is in most cases part of a general pattern of poor health habits. Folks here are probably not typical American eaters.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, but actually I posted this one first but I didn't think anyone was interested as no one commented until now. Animals are so amazing, it boggles the mind sometime. It's video's like this that give me my passion for helping animals like the ones who fell victim in the other stories posted. It's not all good sometime, but we need to see it and step up to help change it. They suffer in silence and we are their voice.

I’m currently reading The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. I had been on the wait list at my library for both the audiobook and the hardcover, planning to read/listen to whichever came in first. Well, the audio arrived right before Christmas, at a time when I would be doing very little driving (I usually listen while driving to my kids’ far away high schools). I started it, but only could listen in little blocks of time while running errands, etc before Christmas. I got lucky tho because the hardcover came in this weekend, so I just spent the morning reading. The downside is that Tom Hanks is the narrator for the audio version-my first book with him as narrator and he is very entertaining, esp this book as the main character is a teenage boy but the book spans 50 years of his life. While I’m still enjoying the hard copy, I can hear his voice in my head as narrator! No plans today so Im hoping to finish it later this afternoon.

It's a good, simple explanation of the stages of grief. It's also an illustration of the brief sadness we feel about the passing of someone known to us only through the media.

Kubler-Ross's work matured as she matured. Reading her early work is very different to her later books. She experienced a lot of anger when she had a stroke. In addition to her work, for anyone looking for books on grief Therese A. Rando is a highly recommended author.

If you find Kubler-Ross's "On Death and Dying" interesting and relevant to your own experience, you might find it interesting to comparatively read a short story,"The Death of Ivan Ilyich", written in 1886 by Russian Leo Tolstoy.
Written almost 100 years apart, they fit like hand and glove. It occurs to me that life's fundamental experiences don't change much across cultures and ages. Still we grieve. Derry

I was interested to read in the paper that Kubler-Ross listed four phases of the afterlife:

1-leaving the physical body
2-meeting angels or spirit guides
3-traversing a tunnel toward a bright light
4-becoming spiritual energy

I was interested to read this, because as my mother lay dying in a nursing home, she mentioned people she saw, in particular her sister who died decades ago. I believe she was meeting her spirit guides.

Socks, my mom saw people too. She also stated just four days prior to her death, "I'm going to die". I wasn't there when she said that, and wish that I could have tried to talk to her more about it. She wasn't very verbal at all before her death, but maybe I could have gotten something out of it.
I wish that when she told me just one night before her death, "I see her", that I would have pressed her more as to who she saw. She said, " I see her". Then, I asked her who she saw and she didn't answer me. About a minute or two later, she said, "Bye" to whoever she saw. I do believe that she was communicating with that person she said she saw. She Alzheimer's and couldn't hold a thought for as long as she did from the time she told me she saw her to the time she said, "Bye".
It's so easy to say what we should have done.

oh, my.. Lu.. those would have been intersting answers to hear if she could have given them to you. Maybe it was meant to be for her ears only.

I think I would be interested in reading that Kubler-Ross book and the listed four phases of the afterlife. I have always felt a need for years now.. and especially now to hae something to have faith in and if you could call it.. understanding.. to the point of reassurance. Does that make sense?

I'm glad you explained the joke, which was clever. (I'm tired tonight, and not clever!) I hadn't heard about Kubler-Ross...How old was she?

Once saying of her impending death, "I am like a plane that has left the gate and not taken off."

When my best friend's mother was dying, she said she kept reaching up. When she'd ask her what she needed, she just smiled and kept reaching. My friend said it was one of the most beautiful/heartwrenching things you can imagine.

Every time I read this thread I swear I'm going to buy her book.. I want to read more about her phases and reasoning on the afterlife. I'll not forget this time..

It has been nice spending some time talking aboutelisabeth Kubler-Ross. Good Thread.
