Just a little light hearted discussion about Red and Blue!

So, to give a little feedback and rules of engagement for
this discussion. I am posting this to challenge the traditional sense of “Blue
is for Growing and Red is for Blooming”. This has been something that I have
been told for a long time and have started to dive into it.

I will lead in with I am a farmer and a very amateur
scientist at best. I am looking to understand if blue really does help plants “grow
faster” and why?

The study I came across is: Stimulation of Growth and Ion
Uptake in Bean Leaves by Red and Blue Light published in 1992. In it they
discuss how the exposure to red and blue light weakens cell walls through
acidity allowing more expansive growth by the plant.

I am assuming this is scientifically why blue and red lights
are used in growing/flowering. As for the specifics I am still diving deeper
into that if someone can point me to some scholarly articles to read. If I am
incorrect please step in and correct me.

I have also came across these sources that seem to back the belief:

Blue light irradiation promotes growth, increases
antioxidants in lettuce seedlings

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT PLANT GROWTH

I did find an interesting scholarly article that discusses
how plants that are going through drought often experience a similar change in internal
pH, which as a side note makes me wonder if the increase in Blue/Red is having
a similar effect much like when Green is increased on a plant it fools that
plant into believing it is in shade (see shade avoidance syndrome).

Please share any criticism on this or areas that I am
missing. I am always looking to poke holes in things or my beliefs!
