help need price advice for ny area flooring

PLEASE HELP!
This is the first time I am refinishing my red oak floor and we have chosen to use the Rubio Monocoat Fume & Rubio Monocoat Hard wax Oil finish.(no poly) We live in Staten Island, NY and I am not sure what a "good" price should be. If anyone from the NY or Staten Island area knows how much it should cost to refinish a hardwood floor per sq ft. I would appreciate some guidance. I've gotten a quote that is $6 a sq/ft & $5 a sq/ft any ideas as this is much more then a typical strip/sand, stain & polyurethane.

When I worked mostly on Staten Island, $6 per square foot is what I got for custom work...and all of it was custom. You can get work for as little as $1.25 if you shop around, but good luck with that. I think you probably can get what you want for about $5...Rubio Monocoat is fairly new, so it is custom work.

Thanks glennsfc - I was hoping you would respond to my question. Do you like the Rubio products? I hear great things about it. Our floors currently look like this and we want them to look more like that on the right. We are going to test of course. Any opinions on products. We are looking for a more natural finish to the floors, ie: shiny poly. ALSO should the price they give us include the materials or is that additional?

You need to seal the deck to the weather before you put a deck on top. Call a roofer first. Explain to him the plan and he will put down an appropriate material. Probably a membrane material. Then call in the deck guy. But make sure he does not sink any nails or screws into the roof. Ron

Hyjenist, you're cabinets are awesome!! nyrgirl, Based on the quote I got from dutchwood, they're out of your price range. For what it's worth, I may be in the minority, but I wasn't impressed with them. I loved my cabinet makers and I'd think they'd go to Staten island. They don't subcontract, make all of the cabinets in their shop (it's in the back of their showroom and you can take a tour), get the doors from the Amish in PA and seem to meet all of the requirements you listed, plus they have fantastic weights requirements for the drawer hardware. On a budget, I'd certainly keep an eye on the Habitat for Humanity Restore down in Menands. Not likely to find a whole kitchen (though some times they have pretty substantial cab collections), but you might find the odd element there. For instance, I bought an Elkay Lustertone prep sink there for $5. It was used, but being a high quality material it cleaned up perfectly. There is an Amish/Mennonite cabinet maker just east of Hoosick Falls in Rensselaer Co. on Route 7 (Down the Northway from CP to New Rt 7> Go east, past intersection w/ 787 > then east up and out of Troy on Hoosick street> through Brunswick > past Tomahannock Reservoir > past intersection w/ Rt 22 > past stop light at the BBQ joint and then about 3/4 mile further east on your left. They have an oversized wooden bedframe in the front, filled with blooming annuals, a "flower bed", LOL) I like Feiden's in Latham for appliances. Of course, there's always IKEA in Stoughton, MA or the one in Paramus NJ, each about equidistant from here. Worth looking into, even though it's a long haul (4+ hours). I plan to use some of their cab boxes with custom door/drawer fronts ordered online from a third-party. Maybe we should see if there are a few GWers from the Cap District interested in a recon trip to IKEA this summer and make up a car pool. Perhaps even go in together on a rental truck to bring stuff back on a later date. I am always surprised to find so many people here who are GW/KF readers and local residents, because I never find one in real life. Help! Need advice on paint colors in open floor plan

Thank you for your opinions. Am going to get some paint samples this weekend. Will first try to see if I can make a shade of beige work...I really want the look of a white/carrera marble kitchen so might have to rethink paint color for entire floor IF I can't find the right cream/beige. I love the warmth of browns/beige, which is why I did not go with grey color originally in our living room area. BUT, the vision for my new kitchen is throwing me. My kitchen currently has brown cabinets so brown tone made sense when we moved in! Would appreciate any other specific paint colors to look at to coordinate with carrera marble. Thank you all!!

The pricing you get should include all materials. Make sure that is so to avoid having a contractor give you a low ball price and then present you with additional costs after the job is complete. Unfortunately most flooring, regardless of what it is, gets marketed that way to entice the consumer to buy the product or service. Get something in writing that spells out what products will be used, how the job will be done and what the contractor will expect from you.

I have not worked with Rubio Monocoat yet, but colleagues love the concept and the visual results. To get your floors to look anything like the picture on the right is custom work. What is your time frame for the work, if I may ask?

Hi glennsfc - thanks so much for the info. We have some time to do the floors but for us the sooner the better. We have been living in a construction zone for over a year now with the kitchen Reno. Why do you ask? Do you know anyone you could recommend? I'm shocked we have had a few people come but no one has followed up with a proposal. Wednesday night we have someone new coming to look. Hopefully they want to do it.

We are still batting zero. But I did find another company that says they do the Rubio often in the city. I'll keep you posted if you need to dust off your sander & knee pads!
