question about teenage boys

My friend's son is 17 years old. She is afraid he might be gay. She said that he had a girlfriend and he broke up with her because she was more interested in a sexual relationship than he was. I was always under the impression the that is all that was on the brain of boys that age. (can you tell I only have girls?) My friend got pregnant with the boy in question when she was 17, and has always harped to him about not wanting him to become a teenage parent like her. Do you think this may be affecting his attitude towards sex?

Not all 17 year old boys just have sex on the mind. And maybe he is just plain smart enough to know that it would be a stupid mistake with that girl. I had three boys, yes, they were interested in girls, but they could see what kind of trouble their friends got into.

My beloved brother is gay and never had a real girlfriend or dated seriously in high school (in the 70's). He had a lot of girls for friends, was also popular and class president. He did take a girl (a friend) to the prom. If this kid is actually into girls and going out with them on regular basis, I wouldn't think right away that he is gay. And so what if he is? I think it is good that he's not into sex for the fun of it and thinking about the consequences. Somebody should sit down and talk about earnestly with him about sex, birth control and relationships in general. If he might be gay, it would be nice if somebody were open-minded enough and close enough to him to discuss this also in a general way, that it's totally OK and he is loved and regarded well whatever sexual orientation he decides. If he admits that he might be gay, not sure, then I would also discuss disease prevention measures with him. AIDS is on the increase again these days because many young men think that the Rx cocktails are going to prevent them from AIDS, should they test positive for HIV (not true, anymore). It is hard for some folks to digest that a son or relative might be gay, but the risk of disease is high for this group and should be addressed as forthright as those we set forth for our straight sons and daughters.

Okay, let's see; 89 octane fuel is okay. We need to know exactly what oil you put in and how many ounces. Seafoam is okay and 1 oz/gal is not excessive. A 2-cycle will smoke from the exhaust if there's too much oil in the gas. The 10550 has the 'Duraforce' engine that requires a 32:1 mix of Lawn-Boy oil. That's one 8 oz can to two gallons of fuel. Re-reading your post it sounds like you picked up two small bottles of 2-cycle oil, probably a synthetic or synthetic blend, possibly designed for a 50:1 mix. This actually should have been okay IF the mix was properly agitated before putting in the mower. The procedure on these hard-to-mix oils is to add the first bottle to about half a gallon of gas and try to mix it the best you can without slinging gas around. Then add about another half gallon, pour in the second bottle and mix again. Finish filling the can, cap it and shake vigorously. Shake the can before fueling the mower, every time. If I had to guess, I'd say you possibly did not have the oil well-mixed, and the gas you put in the mower was too light on oil. This caused the engine to overheat, usually causing permanent damage. At least it didn't seize, which is a hopeful sign. All Lawn-Boy two-cycles have iron cylinder sleeves, so perhaps it's not too bad. Check the air filter - remove it, wash it, dry it and oil it with 2-cycle oil or special filter oil. I'm trying to figure how smoke could come out of the carb. If you did scratch up the piston and bore, the compression would be low, possibly explaining the poor performance after the incident. This one thing probably explains the constantly-dwindling sales of the 2-cycle mowers leading up to Toro finally pulling the plug - all it takes is one time 'straight-gassing' a 2-cycle and it's junk. If they had been a hot seller, they would have found a way to make them compliant with emmissions laws. As it was, they decided to just get out of that game since the LB share of the market was so small. People today will not pay attention to details like this - they expect everything they use to be a 'refrigerator' - you plug it in and forget it. 4-cycle mowers are easy to maintain and have similar maintenance requirements as cars vis a vis oil changes and air filters.

1. If all tomato plants are members of the nightshade family, does that mean that a mutation occured to a nightshade plant in the distant past that resulted in the genetic parent of all tomato plants? The nightshade family, Solanaceae, is very large and has over 100 different genera that includes not just tomatoes, but eggplant, pepper, potato, petunia, shrubs of all kinds and lots of other flowers. They all evolved differently, so no, a single mutation in one member of the Solanaceae family did not give rise to tomatoes. 2. If the answer to the previous question is yes, or partially yes; does that then mean that all subsequent non hybridized tomato vareities are the result of mutation and cross breeding of mutated plants. The answer above was no, but of all the OP ( open pollinated) varieties we know, they first arose by cross pollination to form a hybrid and then some astute farmer or gardener planted out the saved F2 seeds, made selections and kept doing that until the final selection was OP, which takes from maybe 3 to 10 years. And the explanation of how that works is in the link I gave above. The cross pollination is not between mutated plants if I understand what you're trying to tell me. I've seen estimates that say about 95% of OP varieties arose in that manner and only about 5% arose by mutation from a preexisting variety. But it's good to know that there are also about 12 different species of tomatoes of which only our garden tomato and two others are edible. 3. Can a plant be reverse bred to "dehybridize" it? Can you know without examining and comparing the genome of the plants? A known F1 hybrid can sometimes be dehybridized to an OP version. It depends on how many parental genetic inputs there are, to a certain degree. There are OP versions of Sungold F1 and Ramapo F1 and Better Boy F1 and Santa F1 and some others and how close they come to the original F1 is subject to individual opinion. If the new OP walks, talks and tastes close to the original F1 that's about all one can use for assessment b'c DNA sequencing cannot be done for direct comparison b'c not all the genes in the tomato genome are known although it's an area of extreme interest and the Tomato GEnome Project at Cornell is comprised of a lot of researchers who continue to ID tomato genes, as do others not based at Cornell who then report back their findings. There have been instances where a commercial famer has maintained that seeds purchased were not what they should be and there are a few commercial labs that deal with those situations in terms of limited DNA sequencing to determine of the seeds sold were what they should be re any lawsuits that might arise. But I do know of some work, not published, where certain OP varieties are being compared in terms of origin of certain genes, not the whole genome. There is some related work in terms of evolution of tomato shape and size available and was the subject of an article in an issue of Scientific American last year and the cover picture of that issue was showing some of the results. 4. Can a hybrid plant be bred through successive generations which will result in a hybrid which will always breed true in the future? No, if you're talking about doing it via saved seed, thus sexually. Yes, if you're talking about vegetative propagation by using lateral branches, aka suckers, which is cloning, to perpetuate the hybrid. Your "boy" is a young man. Young men don't wear rollers. If he starts "rolling" it, he is in for some serious teasing from the other kids and you will be posting on a different forum for bullying. Leave him be. If he keeps it neat and is a good kid, let it be. BTW, DH in his teens had very long hair, most times in a ponytail. Was it horrible for his mother, I would guess maybe/maybe not. Now as an adult his hair is very short (and gray). I think his mom didn't make a big thing out of it and it eventually went away. Please don't roll his hair, just the thought makes me cringe. I have a 16 soon to be 17 yr. old DD, so I know its not easy with the teen thing. As long as he is doing well- respectful, proper behavior in school, decent grades, good friends, nice social life, let it go. There are bigger worries than his long hair IMHO. Best of luck to you.

3.5 is about average. The lowest I've ever seen is around a 2.5 and the highest a 4.5. I may be wrong - there are a few different types of tests like this, but this is supposed to simulate foot traffic of a family of four over a two year period. Such a test is good to determine quality of one carpet vs. another, but it is not so good to rate performace over a period of time because most people want their carpet to look good for much longer than two years. For example a carpet rated a 4.5 will look very good for at least two years. I would like a test that rates carpet appearance for 5 years or longer.

Not all young men are sex fiends! The kid might have decided that he want's to wait until he's READY for a permanent relationship ... and the mom is worried?

What lazygardens said! I'd be thankful for that. We hear about boys and men who chase women and seem to have an insatiable appetite but there are many who want a meaningful relationship with a woman and use every bit of willpower to refrain from temptation. And no doubt his mother's instruction to not become a teenage parent has had a lot of influence as well.

My understanding is that most gay males become sexually active a little later than straight males - so at 17 I would think it is too early to tell.

My guess is that he doesn't find hyper promiscuous girls atractive.

There is nothing you can do about his orientation. He is what he is.

hmm. sounds like the problem's more with the mother than the son.

she's 'worried' because her son's not the kind of nebbish that SHE was obviously attracted to at his age? or because maybe he learned from his mother's mistakes that being a slave to one's gonads is contradictory to just about everything else in life?

her son's conduct is her business- his sexual orientation is his own business, and while it's not the first time I've run in to women like her- I never stop being appalled.

I think it is doubly important for young males to refrain from promiscuous sex.They will be stuck paying child support for the next eighteen years if the girl gets pregnnt and decides to keep the baby.There are so many young girls that have the ill concieved notion that having a baby and going on welfare can "save" them from a lousy home life.Society tends to treat the fairer sex more gently when it comes to teen pregnancy.Although it is important to teach both girls and boys to be wiser than their hormones,I have really stressed it with my teen boys because it is so hard to get an education when you are forced to pay support for another household too.That young man is hopefully just being a smart one.
