Who are you and how do you cope?

im debbie, live in canada. i lost my husband of 25 years a little over 4 years ago. he was a double above the amputee because of being diabetic. he had a massive stroke and we decided to have life support turned off right away. i have i daughter still at home, she just graduated from university in may with 2 degrees and a shih tzu named grace joy devine that my dh got my 3 weeks before he passed. to cope i walk 4 miles one way to the cemetery everyday to visit him. i walk 10 miles a day to try to destress and quilt and knit.

We have been on this site together for quite a while now, I am sorry that you had a bad night but it happens and probably always will.
Who am I - I am an Enlish girl who came to NY to be a nanny for one year but three days after I landed as JFK I met the love of my life and we had 41 wonderful years together, 37 1/2 years of marrage. Until then I didn't know that love like that was possible. Bob has been gone for almost 5 years and I still have bad days (and nights) and I am sure I always will. Sometimes it feels like yesterday and yet other days it feels like he is getting further and further away so I am glad for a bad day to bring him back. Does that make sense?
Knitting has been my saving grace, almost as soon as he passed I went to the library in town and offered to teach a knitting class, I have met some wonderful ladies and we are still going. I have joined Senior Citizen clubs and the Red Hatters and I have fun but they are just a distraction, when I get home I am alone again. I retired last year and some said I would regret it but I don't, work was great for the first 3 years but then it started getting in the way of things I wanted to do.
What knitting project are you working on right now? My class are doing to-up socks and a neat scarf with a collar.

wish our library taught stuff, i live one block from a place called the 55plus senior center, haven't had the nerve to go there yet. i probably will in the fall, but right now i enjoy my own company to being with others(see how different people are). i am working on a Mary Maxim -- reindeer pattern from the erly 60's. they sell them already made up at the Bay store in canada at 360.00!! Al would always see me with knitting needles in my hands, and yes they go through me many days and nights at the hospital. i would love to learn to knit socks --since i live in northern canada, where it might get as cold as -40 and right now it's 104 at 9 pm. as i say to my children isn't it weird how one person can have an affect on your life. well it's the beginning of our canadian civic holiday -- not that it matters,one day is the same as the next.

Start by reviewing the must have hostas in the FAQ section of this forum. I think you need to scroll down to item 19 or 20 to Hostas that meet the 10 foot rule. They are the ones that stand out when someone walks into your garden and there is no doubt what they are. Don't limit yourself from Jim's Hostas. Ask the members here for the suppliers they recommend. Northern Perrenials and Hallson's are two of the favorites. Consider your options and definetely seek advice from the people here. Ask alot of questions before you go overboard buying. When I started collecting here in Minnesota, money was not a problem and I have access to many hybridizers. More is not the answer. Teresa

Make sure the doc works with you on proper medication after the surgery. It may take some trial and error before you feel really good. I had trouble with my doc at first. I described symptoms and told him my mom had hypothryroid and asked for a blood test for the thyroid. He spend about a half an hour talking about my age, stress, diet, depression, menopause, etc. Then the test came back that I am hypothyroid. He prescribed synthroid. Didn't work. Asked for the Levoxy that worked for my boss when synthroid didn't. Levoxy didn't work for me. I'm now trying armour. It's a little better, but I'm no where near myself yet. My doc still talks depression medication when I see him, I just tell him I don't want that, I want the latest thyroid drug I've heard of, and he prescribes it for me. Just educate yourself and be prepared for possible trial and error for a while. Maybe you'll get lucky and the first thing you try will do the trick! If not, and if your doc isn't willing to prescribe anything you want to try, find a new doc. Shouldn't have to argue or convince the doc, IMHO.

petra, we are building a house right now and one thing I have learned through this process is to trust the doubts you are having. I have found that when things are truly "right", and what I deep down want, i haven't had any doubts. When I let my husband talk me into something that wasn't quite what I wanted, or hastened my decision despite some nagging misgiving, it was wrong. If you are able to catch your cabinet order in time, you may be able to hold it up until you are very sure. You will be living with this for a long time and should not let a kitchen designer or anyone else push you. I'll give you an example of something I knew wasn't right, but let others talk me into it. My kitchen window. It is 8 feet long and will be just above the backsplash to allow for electrical outlets to be placed. (Otherwise I would have gone down to the counter with the window). I was talked into double hungs (3 of them in a bank of windows) despite the fact I was concerned about the center of the window cutting into my view outside. It was not a cheap window. Well, the window came and was installed. I walked in the house that I am loving each and every day and started crying. I HATED the window. The center of the windows cut my view exactly at eye level. I had originally wanted a slightly larger fixed center pane with two casement windows on either side (a triple casement) but had been talked out of it due to safety concerns of the window opening into the porch a bit. My gut knawed at me about the double hungs, but we ordered them anyway. My new kitchen window arives this week. I will put a wooden barrel by the window with flowers on it so no one walks into the window. I am at peace. Mine was "only" a $2,000 mistake. Kitchen cabinets cost a great deal more. Sandy

Nope, we were in a coastal town and within a 5 minute drive to the beach. Lots of ocean breeze, but still its hot all year round. Yes, Michigan has humidity and heat too, and yes it can be miserable to be in but it’s not in the 90’s or 100’s year round and we do reap benefits from that humidity like lots of rain (as opposed to droughts). Lawns are lush and healthy, plants and trees alike thrive here. It also never gets so hot that you can fry an egg on the hood of your car. Then there are the thunderstorms. When the humidity peaks, they come in for a quick shower to cool things down. Open the windows and that breeze with it’s smell of the rain is heaven. Say what you will Elmer, but as far as I’m concerned there is really no comparison. I’ll take Michigan’s summer of months of humidity along with it’s snow and ice in the winter over that dry relentless heat any day. I don’t miss it at all. LOL Forgot to add, I’m in one of those suburbs too, about 45 miles north of Detroit. When it comes to snow, it’s the perfect spot because we’re too low for the northern squalls and far enough north to miss the Ohio Valley Blizzards. We usually don’t get more than 6 inches at a time during the season. We live on a hill and the AWD on our SUV’s has no problem driving threw it, but the views are beautiful.
