Do you have bluestone coping? What deck did you choose?

Hello,

We are getting ready to start a new pool build, and we changed from cantilever concrete to flamed bluestone coping.

I really want a clean and uncomplicated-looking deck space, and was wondering if anyone on here chose bluestone coping, and if so, what decking material they selected.

Pics would be super, and any input is much appreciated.

Do you have any other stone flatwork that would be appropriate to match? Or, a stone or brick veneer on the house to match?

Bluestone coping can go with anything, but IMHO looks best with matching bluestone flatwork or colonial style brick (soft brick, not hot-fired), and not much else. For a clean, uncomplicated look (your words), go with a bluestone deck.

my order came yesterday and every single plant is healthy and huge - love their plants We are due a nice amount of rain Thursday into Friday so will be a planting fool today - some in the gardens and the rest potted up into larger pots. which type of neighborhood would you choose/what DID you choose?

Either B or C...we're not the cheapest house in the neighborhood but there are some that are significantly larger/more extravagant/ pricier than ours. The neighborhood began development about 20 years ago. The original builder is completing the development. We actually chose the neighborhood before we decided to build. We chose it for the school system (best in the city), location (very close commute to work, shopping, highway, etc), and the overall feel. When we walked around while shopping for houses, other people stopped us to introduce themselves and tell us how much they liked their house, neighborhood, and the builder. We also ran into about 7 different acquaintances that all lived there! We looked at another development that is newer but the houses all backed up to each other so the backyards were not private. That was a deal breaker for us. We couldn't find a house in our price range to buy in our chosen neighborhood, so we bought the last lot and are currently builder. So far, relatively smooth sailing.

Bluestone Coping Does not Match Bluestone Decking

tresw, thanks for your input. Actually, I never physically picked the finishes - my pool contract provides for everything to be bluestone and does not state that they will be two different varities of bluestone. The theme of my pool was supposed to have been a uniform looking deck where the coping was indistinguishable from the rest of the deck. During construction when I pointed out the issue I was told that materials did not exist to provide such a uniform look (the stone masons claimed that the 1 inch stone on the deck was not manufactued in the 2 inch thickness that is needed for coping - 1 inch is apparently not thick enough for coping), but I did some research following construction and found out that the 2 inch thickness is available by special order. Now, I need to decide whether to have the pool contactor fix this issue (at their expense) or just let it be. I am leaning towards having them fix the issue b/c I am reminded of the issue everytime I look or go outside. I also agree that having them install a couple of pieces is the way to go if I do decide to drop the hammer on them.

What did you do with your walls if you have no backsplash?

We didn't put in a tiled or granite backsplash b/c we postponed it due to budget (plus I didn't know what I wanted). We just painted w/a scrubbable paint (BM Cornsilk). However, be sure you tell the templater that you will not have a backsplash...and keep telling him/her! Otherwise, they'll assume they don't have do that good a job of templating along the wall b/c they'll think the tile will hide it. Oh, and put it in writing! Even though I was very explicit and they had our design with NO backsplash, they still gave me a gap that was big enough to push my fingers in up to my knuckles...I refused to sign off until they fixed it. I now have a fairly small gap that black silicone (or is it caulk?) hides very well and also keeps water (and crumbs) from falling behind the counters. I have a black counter, so the black is perfect. There is one run that has clear and we tried painting over, but the paint doesn't "stick"...so make sure they use something that either already matches your counter or wall or that can be painted.

Oooooh, thejimbar, I like that! Do you know what the sf on something like that usually runs?

jrobyn, the entire house is brick (all four sides), and we have a large brick retaining wall and a brick gated entry, so I was really wanting something else just for a change. Maybe the bluestone or a light-colored paver like the above would be best.

All a blur at this point...but I think it was around $5-6 a square for the travertine (clearance special, www.gothicstone.com) and another $10/sq ft or so for installation.

I love the travertine pavers. How are those installed? Do you still have the initial expense of the concrete decking then those applied over that? Also is that coping you are using similiar to the cantilever coping? Thanks very much. Beautiful pool!!

We have bluestone coping and went with "pewter" EP Henry pavers...It looks AWESOME! Wish I could show you picks, but I don't know how :) Good luck with whatever you choose!

Travertine set over sand and crushed stone(QP. quarry process), just like a paver. Coping is bluestone that was ground to a bull nose.
