Wow, what great news, Lisa! I'm so happy for you! Nothing worse than not being able to see clearly. I have been wearing trifocals since my mid-40's because I couldn't stand having that DEAD zone in the middle between my distance prescription and my close up prescription. But I have often wondered if surgery would help. Now I'm developing cataracts, and I have to wait for them to "ripen" before they will operate. Meantime, my vision gets worse and worse, especially at night. It seems crazy that you have to wait until the cataracts are so thick you are half blind before they can fix them, but that's the way of it. Maybe I will find out more about other options when I am ready to have that done. Thanks for sharing, and here's hoping your world gets brighter and more beautiful every day. 5 years after successful lasik surgery, one of my eyes has changed fairly dramatically. My eye doctor suggested a touch up on that eye, and I've got an exam scheduled to see if I'm a candidate. I am, of course, worried about it; getting myself geared up mentally for the first lasik was traumatic enough (although I recovered quickly and had no complications). Has anyone had a second lasik, touch up or enhancement? Did it go well?

Even though this is an old thread I thought I would comment. I had Lasik in September of 2005. I had instane correction- BUT my eyes were so dry that the next day when I went back for post op check I coul barely get there! My eyes were so dry the doc said the cornea looked like 'scabs'. I had to stay another day before he would let me drive home- and I had to use drops every 10 minutes. I have had to have them looked at a few times because I will not be able to see, and there is horrible pain in the eyes. The eye doc says it is 'dry eye'. Now that the complication of dry eye is known, I am not certain I would have the surgery or not.... When I go south, where the climate is more humid I don't have such a problem, but here in northern Wyoming it is dry. Yesterday and today I can't read a book, cook a recipe because I can't read. I tried to use the phone book and can't. If there are errors in my tyoing I cannot see them. When my eyes are not dry, I like the results- I guess now I realize that I couldn't stand the contacts because my eyes were so dry. Mixed feelings... If you are thinking about LASIK, be CERTAIN you question your doc about the status of your eyes- if they are dry at all. It has been found that when the cornea is sliced, the 'lubrication/tear' nerves are damaged. They eyes become more dry.

Yes, my husband and possibly another nephew will accompany Uncle to the doctor appointment. Uncle will listen and ultimately ask the "boys" to tell him what to do. Lazygardens expressed the concern: "He'll get some mental clarity from the increased blood flow, but still be unable to get around like he's hoping to. And that might be worse for him than quietly declining and dying with his heart." Mental clarity without regaining physical stamina will likely mean a future move to the nursing home since he can no longer use the restroom or transport himself from wheelchair to bed or chair by himself. And a move to the nursing home is exactly what he does not want. He doesn't even want the physical therapy because it means a 3 block ride and stepping foot in the nursing home where the therapist facility is located. He's fallen enough times trying to move around without assistance that he's lucky he hasn't broken a hip. A couple months ago my husband took him to a VA doctor due to anemia and she suggested 3 things: iron pills, physical therapy and another dietary supplement-like Ensure or other nutritional shake to ward off the weight loss. His response was no, no and no. The doctor joked, "I didn't bring my magic wand to work today - guess that's 3 strikes and I'm out." Ultimately Uncle did agree to the iron pill. He's nearing 87. There are some at that age that still seem so young and agile; however he has reached the tipping point of being so fragile. Uncle hasn't accepted the fact he's dependent upon care and must both ask for it and pay for it, which he can afford but doesn't want to do. He thinks he can figure it out for himself. For example he stopped taking one pill without letting the nurses know (kept it hidden under tongue and later spit it out). Ultimately we found out. And the only reason he talked about it was because we were reviewing the pharmacy pill costs and it was one of the more expensive pills and he mentioned it was silly to be paying for the pills when he wasn't taking them anyway. Oh my.
