a product to make wood/laminate stairs less slippery?

I am going to be putting down a high gloss laminate on the first and second floor of house. There are wood floors that I dont want to cover with carpet-I will either high gloss them or put laminate treads on them. If I sand and stain them is there anything that can be mixed with the poly or stain to have them be less slippery?

Any experience with rust oleom as2102? Its supposed to be some kind of spray on I saw online. Thanks-

Thats a truck bed spray liner. Thats going to ruin the treads. As far as making the treads less "slipery" keep them dry. Or there are peel and stick mats you can place on each tread. Also could go the traditional carpet runner.

Is there a reason you want a high gloss finish?
Although its your choice. A gloss finish on stair treads will look nice for about a month. Then you will start to notice wear on the finish. And yhe smallest amount of wear on gloss sticks out like a sore thumb.

Of course if you go with a runner or mats on the treads then the gloss would be ok without a worry of early wear.

It's called carpet.

And ditto on the high gloss. It is a super high maintenance look that isn't suitable to most people with real lives. And, it can be kinda 1970's bar top cheesy if done poorly.

At one time I was thinking of using the vinyl planks in my living room, which has a stairway connected. I am pretty sure I read where someone tried to use the vinyl on stairs and it did not hold. I ended up using hardwood for my living room, but I didn't want to spend $100 per stair to put wood on my stairs, which will have a runner on them anyway. I have seen quite a few stories on the Net where people painted their stairs, so I tried it. I am amazed at how well the paint is holding up. I'd procrastinating with putting down a runner, because I love how easy it is to clean the wooden stairs. The Benjamin Moore floor paint was $65-$75 a gallon. BUT, it dried to the touch in about an hour,it is especially made for floors, and a gallon goes a long way because it is very thin. Unfortunately I had to paint my stairs during a week when there were extra people and a lot of activity in my house. So I would put a coat on at night and first thing in the morning people were walking on it. It was still tacky so it picked up all of the dirt off people's shoes, but the shoes did not pick up the paint. The paint is thin and you need to do at least three coats. Each coat stays tacky for a few days. I need to put a fourth coat on mine just because of the dirt that got into the third coat while it was still tacky. But so far I am astonished that the paint seems indestructible. An extra benefit of painting is that you can fill all the edges with calk and paint over it, so that you don't have a bunch of quarter round trim all over the steps. I highly recommend painting the stairs rather than trying to do them in vinyl or laminate.

Sorry, didn't see this, Lynn. One thing I read while I was looking for the 5/16" solid -- and I may not recall this exactly right, so just derive the general idea -- was that when looking at engineered wood, there are 3-ply and 5-ply veneers on top. Obviously the 5-ply would have more resurfacing potential. They recommended to always get the higher ply veneer. I saw yesterday, in Home Depot, the 5/16" solid. Yes, it does look kind of thin, but it's solid. I don't have any idea how much weight those things can take or the type of damage, but I'd think having your subfloor correct would be important in supporting it well enough to withstand heavy cabinets. My mother has a huge antique armoire, extremely heavy, sitting on the thin 3/8" engineered stuff in their condo. I think I'd be more afraid the veneer would give, now that you've mentioned it, than a solid. They have 1/2" solids, too, not just 3/4". Which I'm sure you've discovered. How much is the sf price difference between 1/2" solid and 1/2" veneer? When I've casually looked around, just to get a feel for things, the prices seem to be all over the place. Very true with the laminates -- wood floors are slippery enough for our pets and the laminates are even more so.

I feel like lighting will make a HUGE difference. Usually when people say "busy" I imagine cluttered, but your decor looks intentional and your house looks lived in but not like a completely kitchy mess. I think it's just the light/contrast letting you down. So don't be so hard on yourself! I'm a photographer and the think that always stands out to me in houses that are really beautiful is how much light gives the spaces texture, definition, and brightness. Because you have darker floors and some darker pieces of furniture in some spaces they all kind of blend together and look really heavy even though they aren't packed too tightly. It's super easy to just plug whatever lamps you have into outlets and flip a light switch that turns on some lights on your ceiling and stop there, but I think the big difference between really put together living spaces and those that don't quite feel as polished is often the intentional use and choices of light. Layering lights at different levels, paying attention to task lighting, and being selective with fixtures can really make a huge difference. I've no where near perfected this in our house yet, but the few changes we've made in some rooms have really had a big impact. I think the right lighting in your home can do wonders and really help establish the ambiance you are going for.

Yes-carpet. Ive heard of that. Ive also heard of sarcasm.

Im not worried about "bar top cheesy"-the flooring is not.

Its not bowling alley glossy its just not as dull as my satin wood now.

Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

We did wood laminate floors and were advised to do hardwoods on the stairs because the wood laminates don't last as well on the smaller surface of a step. The wood laminate is a floating floor system and the small size of a step doesn't have much room to float/give....I don't work in the industry; this is just was what I was told when I put my kitchen floor in last summer.

The guy who put in the wood laminate didn't really want to deal with building out the hardwood steps and the cost elsewhere made me reconsider....we are now doing carpet on those steps because the other room is carpet and really, really needs replaced.

Laminate is unsuited to stair usage. Choose hardwood or carpet (or both) for them.

A high gloss floor is also a lot of work. You either have to be OCD with a swiffer in your hand and a Roomba running or else you you have to be able to ignore the footprints, spots, dust, and loss of gloss from normal wear. I would suggest runners for traffic paths and on your stairs if you choose to go high gloss, both from the slip and slide perspective and to minimize the wear and tear.

I saw this in the building a home forum

Bona Traffic Anti-Slip. The person that used it said the wood looked normal, but said it was not slippery.

I don't think you will have the gloss though. The poster said that it made an attractive matte finish. Try googling it and see what the images show. If it is too dull you may have to try something else.
