Tamara-- What's up with this annoying ad? Despite the Firefox pop-up ad blocker on my desktop computer, now the Pantene is raining down on my mobile devices too.
Friends, what should I do to keep this carp off my iPhone and iPad?
Oly, I thought that's what I had on my desktop, apparently not. I've updated it again today. Up until now I never had a problem on our mobile devices. Tonight I also have it on my iPad and iPhone. It's the same Pantene ad raining down and covering the screen until I can find the darnn X.
Use Opera with it's built in content blocker, not an addon like Firefox and Chrome. I get no ads, no crazy fonts, no goofy backgrounds... and it loads pages far faster than any of the others and doesn't need the extra security measures required by less safe browsers, like Firefox, IE, etc.
Just tried Opera Mini on my iPhone 5... No difference in ads, huge difference in speed. At best twice as slow as safari, on average 4x as slow, at worst crashes. (Tried a half dozen times to open WFD thread and it crashed every time after 2-3 minutes of chugging along. That's currently about a 15 second page on Safari after clearing cache to level the playing field.)
I don't mind them either, dcarch, except when they cover my whole page and it takes a while to find how to close them out. And I hate to admit it, but I was reminded to put Pantene on my shopping list- I keep forgetting!
Dcarch, it's not just about annoyance, it's about tracking. If you click on an ad, that's an opportunity for more companies to track you. Right now, six companies are trying to track me on this page. The add-on DoNotTrackMe is blocking them.
I used Garden Web search last night to look for a recipe (I know, silly me) and saw that now the search results don't start until after a bunch of ad links (in the text, so not blocked by AdBlockPlus).
I don't mind the ads, either, anymore, as long as they don't rain down, or in this case, snow down on our parade. The in your face aspect turns me off, and convinces me to not purchase the product they are selling.
Tricia, as far as I know, AdBlockPlus does not stop tracking. I use it and love it, but I also have Abine's DoNotTrackMe. So far that has stopped 345,125 attempts to track me.
Another fan of AdblockPlus. At home where I have firefox & adblockplus, I never see any ads. At work, I have firefox but no adblock, I do see lots of ads. I know they're a necessary evil & the expanding headers are a little annoying but when it rains or obscures the whole page it's excessive imho.
I discovered Adblock from the CF and it changed my life forever! I now use Firefox with Adblockplus and never see ads ever. There should be an online equivalent to the Don't Call registry for phone ads.
I don't usually mind the ads since they serve a purpose. I get that someone has to pay for these free forums, however...
This Pantene ad covers my entire screen EVERY single time I hit the back button. If their goal was to chase me off, then mission accomplished. An ad that obtrusive will not work for them or for GardenWeb.
I don't mind them on the sides if that's what pays the bills, however the intrusive (and insistent) nature of the Pantene ad was a real turn off. I don't use the product and don't care to. It dried out my hair years ago and it's not getting a second chance! ;-D
BTW-- it seems to be missing on my mobile devices this morning!
Up until now I havenâÂÂt had a problem with ads still not seeing them BUT now I canâÂÂt open a thread or go from discussion to conversation until I temporarily allow popups.
I don't seem to have a problem today, but yesterday I was getting the ad with the snowflakes, it covered the whole screen and I couldn't find the "x" to close it.
Grrrr. It's like the very invasive popup we used to get on the bottom for Angie's List. I'll never use or buy any product that uses something that annoying for advertising. I remember them, alright, and it's not a good thing.
I didn't mind the snow since I could eventually close it out, but now when I click on a link to a thread I get a Pantene ad in place of that. I too do not mind the ads but this is more akin to a virus since it has taken hold of my ability to use the site.
Ellen, that happens to me on another site, in spite of adblocking software. Sometimes the transparent overlay gets through, but the blocker blocks the "x" that would let me close it! With AdBlockPlus you can go into "blockable items" and look for something that says "overlay" and block that. It's hit or miss whether you can find what does it.
I just needed to stop in and say THANK YOU for this thread I just added do not track me and the ad blocker in chrome and after 1 day I have already blocked over 500 tracking attempts. Plus one site I go to a lot has some nasty ads that have nothing to do with what is on the site an poof no more nasty ads.................So THANK YOU Thank-you THANK-YOU
You're welcome CL! And Christine, thanks for the explanation, it makes sense-- as much as I understand ;)
Actually, the ad in question has been MIA since last night. All mobile devices are readable. Is anyone else seeing it now? Both computers at home were always blocked and tomorrow I'll check out the work computer to see if the ad has evaporated on that system as well. I'm going to load Abine's Do Not Track Me on the laptop asap! Thanks,
On the kitchen forum many are having serious issues since the change in format. There has been a noticeable decline in postings. I emailed Tamara and told her that I had to change my browner to google chrome with ad block. I didn't mind the ads before but now they were covering text. I had been corresponding with Tamara before about this issue but it was never resolved. The pantene ad was horrendous.
I would suggest anyone having any issues being able to use this site to please let Tamara know. It would be really sad if this forum drop off too.
