Son 's loss felt DEEPLY

My son left this world March 25th,after 14 months decline in health...even tho disabled,he made it 23 1/2 yrs. w. no hospital stays.I miss him more than I could ever convey~ my life will never be the same~ how long before the raw pain lessens?

I am very sorry for your loss of your son. I too have a disabled son who is 24. I worry a lot as I get a little older about him and his health. I am very sorry for you, and your are not alone. I know it doesn't fix this, but I hope it helps a tiny bit to know that someone understands and cares.

thx. for the reply.Yes,I wondered how I'd keep being able to take care of him, as my health was not as good as it was when I was younger. Bren was never hospitalized for 23 1/2 yrs.,then 8 times in a yr., altho some due to dr. mistakes.
Yes, it is a whole new feeling...not having my son about..as I took care of him the whole time, except for when he was in the hospital.
Treasure every day, make memories to be enjoyed. God bless.

bluebars: This is so sad. I am sorry. Perhaps it is possible to give a level of application of this weed control product that most trees can tolerate while still killing weeds in a lawn. I would never take the risk. Also, I do believe that Norway spruce are more susceptible to poisoning from this product than some other kinds of trees. Norway spruce is one of my absolute favorite trees, and one of its virtues is its very high disease and insect resistance in most parts of the country. These trees are very tough, and also have wonderful drought resistance. But this susceptibility to weed control chemicals is a weak point. I often see some poor looking trees that are weakened if not completely killed by these chemicals. Needless to say, I hate them. The chemicals are designed to kill most everything except grass. Trees, in this regard, are "weeds." Most trees can survive light applications of these chemicals because they are so big and strong, but their basic susceptibility to the chemicals is the same as the weeds. I won't use them around any trees because it has negative effects no matter how light the application. Before we moved here to the Winchester area we lived in Arlington, VA. At the back of our property there we had the most wonderful line of NS trees--especially wonderful in the variation in appearance (growth form, foliage, etc) from tree to tree. Two years ago we went back to see how the old house was doing. The owner invited us in to see the renovations, etc. Out the back I saw all our NS trees dead or dying. All the weeds in that part of the lawn were gone, but also the trees, that were not only beautiful in themselves, but also a wonderful screen blocking the view from the houses behind. Awful! I must admit that I have a different attitude about lawns than most people. Weeds in a lawn dont really bother me, unless there is some kind that completely takes over and then doesnÂt provide a good ground cover. I really love dandelions, etc. and others that produce nice flowers at different times of the year. My attitude is one that was held for many years in this country. If you ever go to Monticello (Jefferson"s home) in VA and take the garden tour, you will probably be told about how people felt about lawns in those days and how the variety of plants that mixed in with the grasses were thought to be a plus. One of the "weeds" that grew in lawns at that time gave a wonderful fragrance when stepped on. I wish my view of lawns were more common. I have tried to talk to my friends about allowing more variety in their lawns and to stop using these chemicals, but I am sorry to say I donÂt think in all the years I have been doing this that I have made a single convert. There are some people I have met who agree with me, but I have never changed any minds. What to do? Two possible solutions. First, one can place mulch around the trees. Because the roots can extend so far, this may not be practical in most situations. Perhaps mulch closer to the tree, and then some kind of ground-cover plant extending further out or a flower garden, maybe. For the lawn--if the weeds get too bad, kill the old lawn with all the weeds, etc--perhaps with Roundup or something that is active on the foliage and not in the ground, and then replant with a kind of seed guaranteed to be weed seed free. Weeds will eventually come back, however. Perhaps for a long time they can be controlled in areas near trees by hand weeding them out. If it is a choice between the trees and the grass--I choose the trees every time. --Spruce

My grandparents' house never changed. Oh, once there was a new slipcover on a chair, or some new towels in the kitchen, but that was about it. According to my father, the big changes since he was a kid were 1) a refrigerator to replace the ice box and 2) the advent of a television to replace the big radio. After my grandparents died, an uncle and his family moved in and they changed everything--new paint, wallpaper, new floor in the kitchen. Then Uncle and Aunt moved to assisted living and the house was sold. Last year, my brother was back in town and we drove out to the house so he could take a picture of it. The new owners saw us and asked what we were doing. We explained who we were and they very kindly offered to let us take a final look around the house. Interestingly, they've brought the house back to very, very close to the way it was when we were kids. The fussy wallpaper is gone and calm, neutral colors are back on the walls. They have a dining room set eerily like my grandparents. The furniture in the living is arranged pretty much the same way. There's even a chest in the upstairs hall where my grandmother had one. And it wasn't just me, my brother was exclaiming over the same things. And it's not as if the house was new when my GPs' bought it--the house was built around 1875 and my GPs' bought it in 1930. But the new owners have a lot of furniture from about the same era. We were able to tell the new owners a lot about the house and how it looked, explained why the kitchen is much newer than the rest of the house (lightening caused a fire in 1938 and the kitchen had be redone), the colors of the walls, the reason for the odd ceiling light in the basement (used to hang over a pool table). They were very kind and I had a great walk down memory lane.

I am so sorry for your loss. We have a 11 year old poodle that has been our "baby", we got him the year we found out we couldn't have kids so he became our world. Five years ago he was diagnosed with diabetes at the time the vet misdiagnosed him and gave him steroids which pushed the diabetes into overdrive so by the time we figured it out he had lost his eye sight. They told us at the time to take him home and make him comfortable. Well me being his "mom" there was no way I was giving up that easily. He's been on insulin for 5 years now and is doing great. But I know the time is going to come sooner than I would like and we will lose our little boy. The thought of that is more than I can bare. I don't know what we will ever do with out him. I made the decision about a two months ago to adopt a little Dorkie, hale doxie, half yorkie. His name is Cooper and he has been such a light in our home. He's even made Buster a little more spry. I knew we would NEVER be able to replace Buster, he's just way to special but I also knew I couldn't live with out a dog in the house. To me having Cooper will make it a little easier when the time comes to tell Buster goodbye. I know in my heart that Buster is loved and has had the best life possible. We have been so blessed to have him in our lives.

Oh honey, I sense your pain. You sound just like Hamsteve, the wonderful stepdad who raised his SD w/ his wife, the girl's mother. The biodad there, also poisoned the DD against her mom and stepdad despite not being there for the girl for the most part in any way, provided her w/ a country club partying life and she moved from VA to FL - not looking back. She is the only child there, too. Like most of our advice to Steve, I think and hope and pray this will run its course. Steve's DD has outright been very negative towards him and her mother, not calling, even flying back to their town to visit friends w/o notifying them, etc. Keep the lines of communication open as best you can. The SM's behavior is despicable and so far out of line, it isn't remotely humorous. I can't understand their motive. But, I wonder if all will be fine and dandy in another few months, or more. It's only been a week and a half. As a mom, I know that sounds like a lifetime, but it isn't that long - they're all still in the honeymoon phase. Even my SD's first few weeks here were great. But, then little things began to bug me - I did more cleaning up than ever before and began to resent her. Of course, she never treated me very well in the beginning of our marriage, so we have a history w/ old wounds, etc. Anyway, even under the best of circumstances, it's tough to share a roof w/ someone who really hasn't been there all along. What do you think their motivation was to get him w/ them? It can't be financial, esp. given the miniscule amount they contributed to his well-being. Just plain old jilted feelings from nearly 20 years ago? Maybe try to ride this out, be glad he's not living in some apt. somewhere w/ a nutty roommate, and be supportive. If they continue their negativity towards you, make frequent visits and then see if DS will consider living in the dorm or an apt. Try to talk that aspect up. If he gets a gf, he may desire more privacy, less rules, etc. My SS disappeared from us over 2 years ago. I think his issues are that he is gay, and not comfortable w/ that, and that he messed up. Everyone had high hopes for this boy - he was very, very smart. He either dropped or failed out of college after moving to a partying atmosphere sr. year. He also stuck me on his $25K student loans I cosigned for him. Nonetheless, I tell his sisters that while I'm disappointed, it isn't worth losing the family over and he is welcome back any time. Even they don't hear much from him. I fear there were drugs he got involved w/ for the turn around. DH buries his head in the sand on most unpleasant issues and they never talked about the gay issue. So, after all of this, I'm just saying to keep in touch w/ your son. He should have more and more of a sense of who was there for him through the years as time goes on. Meanwhile, keep communicating, try not to be always defending yourself if issues arise, though that's hard. It's better to give your side of any stories face to face - and I'd plan to be there as much as I could. All the best, Dana

I'm so sorry for your loss. THough I've never lost a child, my dear friend lost her then 14 year old in a snowmobile accident 6 years ago. She still misses him painfully. Time for the wound to heal differs by the person.

My heart cries tears for you. I am so very sorry over the loss of your son. I wish I was there so I could just hug you and comfort you. I know the pain and anguish that you are feeling right now because I lost my only child "AJ" in January of 2002. He was only 15. Every person's journey of grief is different. Personally, the second year was worse for me because I finally had to face reality and that he was never going to come home again. The first year, I was in a fog of disbelief. My grief has softened but I still have bad days, more than good. I know that I will never get over losing him because when you lose a child the sorrow remains forever. I am praying for you.

I know how sad you must be feeling. We lost our oldest son at 36 and our oldest grandchild age 6 nearly two years ago. I agree that this second year has been awful, because the loss is so real, and we are keenly aware that we will never see them again. The pain is just terrible. Memories cause me to tear up once or more each day. We don't know which we miss more - our beautiful son who had everything to live for or that precious granddaughter who even at 6 was precocious, friendly, loving and just beautiful, the image of her daddy. The pain isn't nearly as sharp as it was at the beginning, but the void that remains is almost worse. I have talked to parents who lost children 10, 15, 30 years ago, and nothing ever makes the pain go away. You learn to live with it and deal with it, though. You are in my prayers.

Starchilde, you have my heartfelt sympathy. It has been 5 weeks today since my 30yr old son died from cancer and the pain feels unbearable, worse with each day. You have the added loss of a child who needed you in many more ways because of his disability and you must be at a loss after so many years of caring for him. My son was married and a father and hadn't lived at home for 10 years but he and his brother were my life and the emptiness is overwhelming. The loving people here have all opened their hearts to me and showed me that we do go on with our lives but we have to live with a new reality and make the best of it somehow. Right now it is hard to believe that it will ever get easier but this is a good place to come when you need help.
Right now it is just a case of waking up each day and getting through it. I wish you all the best, Elspeth

It's been 7 years for us without our daughter, Christin. Some days are much better than others. Some days it is like she just left us today. I think when a parent loses her/his child, the pain and emptiness remain in varying degrees throughout the rest of her/his life. We learn to live with the pain just as someone who is horribly disabled learns to live with their diability.
We each have our crosses to bear and we all have to find a way to survive them in the best way that we can. Different people get satisfaction and purpose for the rest of their lives in different ways. We just all have to find our own unique way to survive this.

Dear one,
I do have some understanding. I lost my only daughter about 10 months ago, after she was in the hospital for 4 months. My heart goes to you. I ache with you. Please remember...we, you, those of us who are traveling this road, are not alone. We are not alone. You are not alone. Diana was/is my daughter's name. What is your son's name? I love her as much today as ever and that is actually a comfort. I tell her how much I love her, and you may want to do the same. You asked about the raw pain. It is not as unrelenting as it was in the beginnng, but it does come for me, about once a week and it is pretty bad. I have told everyone, that I have given myself a year to do, be, think, speak and feel anything I want, anytime I want, without fear of recriminations or rebuke. If I want to renew my option after that...I will.

I want to thank everyone for the blessings in replies to my first post.I had not been able to get on, due to hard drive & computer probs.It's been 7 wks. since Brendan's angel date, & it has been hard.I have been going thru boxes to find pictures, to make a memorial video tribute for his memorial service on June 4th. I miss him so much that sometimes it hurts to breathe.His little sister who is 3 1/2 yrs. keeps saying he is coming back,& saving food for him, like saving a danish for brother.I have been in contact with a parent in the area who lost her son, & talking to someone who knows the feeling helps some.God bless all~ will write more individual replies later~

Time heals wounds. My son died 12-01-92, shortly after his high school graduation. I see beautiful sunsets on his birthday.. then realize the date, have good things happen to me on 12/01 and then realize the date,.... he's still with me.

He was taken suddenly, and with hate in my heart for the one that did it, but Erik is still with me.
