Hardwood over particle board?

We're in the middle of remodeling our 1978 mountain home and have recently gotten three bids for installing red oak flooring. The bids are pretty much the same, which is good, I guess. Where they differ, though, is the finish and their ideas about installing over the existing subfloor, which is 3/4" particle board.

Two contractors said "no problem" putting the hardwood over the particle board.

One said they wouldn't guarantee their flooring without ripping out the particle board and installing OSB, to the tune of $3,000 extra bucks.

The particle board is pretty darn hard and has no squeaks whatsoever. Our stairs, however, made of plywood, squeak like crazy and we're going to replace the treads with oak at the same time.

IS it a bad idea to lay hardwood over the particle board?

Also, one guy still uses oil-based finishes. He bid the job using oil-based, but also bid it using Bonakemi Traffic, which would add another $700 to the job.

The other two bid it with Bona Mega.

I've read a bit about Bona Traffic and it sounds good, but how good is the Bona Mega. It's a lot cheaper, by half, but is its performance half as good as well?

Thanks!
