My friend

Very recently a friend lost her husband to suicide. We were pretty good friends (used to have tea & chat together in her kitchen) when our children were younger. Have lost touch with her as the kids got older. I would still see her in town and about at times. I have been thinking of her every day since her husband died (a week ago) I went to visit her at home but she and her children had been staying with relatives. Would it be "proper" when I go to visit her to give her a bouquet of flowers and maybe a box of tea? Leen

Please bring your friend a box of tea and a copy of the book "This To Shall Pass, Keeping Faith During Tough Times". Small conversation is good. She needs lots of time to talk about her sorrow.Hopefully you will be a blessing she needs.
My son was killed 3 months ago today in an motorcylce accident. Greif is always with my family but someone,"out of the blue", can brighten our day with just remembering the joyfull times with us. Bless You for caring enough about your friend to rekindle the friendship.

The plants will be fine. Sorry about the loss of the flowers, but they were close to done anyway, so you didn't miss a lot of bloom. I would leave it like it is so you can see where to plant it with those striking colors. After you choose a spot, make yourself a flower arrangement with the spikes. I do that with all of the iris and lily buds I knock off with the hose. Renee

I finally found the tiles that I believe are on this fireplace FYI - they are from Susan Jablong Designs. I have been on the phone with them for a number of design questions and I have to say they are incredibly pleasent to deal with. I have dealt with Emily (Susan's daughter) and she has just been so helpful as I have gone back and forth on my decisions as I always do, always second guessing my choices. I definately give her the patience of the year award. So here is the link in case you are interested: I considered going to their offices as they just had so many wonderful tile designs but it is five hours each way, but it was probably for the better as I think I would definately have had a more difficult time narrowing it down. Agree with laceyvail and Babs about removing what’s there. If she wants a more formal, uniform planting look, she could do dwarf shrubs, depending on how deep those beds are. If she wants color/more cottage-y style, a mix of perennials, small ornamental grasses, annuals — in varying heights and textures. I think another paved walk to the sidewalk, if budget allows, would look nice and give some definition to the yard. I’d make it a bit wider than the other walkway, and slightly flared where it meets the public sidewalk. A lamp post would be very charming on the driveway side. The ledge under the left window is cute, and if it’s sturdy enough, I’d put some small, pretty pots (or one rectangular pot) on it with flowers. A narrow trellis with a non-aggressive vine would look good on the vertical white thing by the door. Or replace that detail with a post or column. ETA after seeing her location: I googled ‘California cottage’ and saw some ideas. This one has the similar ledges under the windows. :) Also, with being in S Calif, google ‘xeriscape plantings’ for ideas of things that survive drought and heat well. And ask for advice at local nurseries, of course. For painting ideas, you might want to post on the Home Decorating board ... or download a paint app (most of the major paint companies offer virtual painting) and play around with it. How nice to reach out to your friend. I know that since our son died, we have heard from all sorts of people, many from long ago who knew him as a little boy. We are so grateful to everyone who has reached out to us. Thank you for caring about her.

Be careful with the assumption that books about faith and religion are good ideas. Tea, chats and listening are better ideas.

After my sister's death I was swamped with Christian-Themed "Dead People Go To Heaven" books. I'm not Christian, I'm Buddhist.

I think we always have a special bond with friends we had when our children were growing up, even if we have not stayed in touch. Go see your friend, take flowers and tea, and don't "talk around" her loss. She needs to talk about it. She's not necessarily looking for answers, just wants to share what she has been going through. You are a wonderful friend.

I would run, not walk. And bring a box of Kleenex along with the flowers and tea. You are kind-hearted to want to do this. Bless you.

Bring your sympathy, friendship, and good will. Leave your philosphical/spiritual ideas at home unless you know in advance such "sharing" would be welcome.
