My baby sister killed herself...

and this is the first forum I found. I stayed with my parents for a week to help them but I am back where I work now. I tried to be strong for my family during the time but now that I am alone I feel this distant yearning, I don't feel right. I looked after her my whole life. She came to me for advice and I gave her the best I could. She suffered from mental illness so I got my masters in counseling in hopes of helping her. I just feel like I have failed her.

I am so sorry that you've lost your dear sister.

The life path of anyone who has "mental illness" (I don't think there's really such a thing; I think it's more accurate as well as kinder to call it "brain disfunction") is rocky & filled with obstacles.

& there's only so much they, or you, or I, can do to ease the journey.

Please remember what your education taught you;
we recover from grief & loss in stages, & each stage takes its own time.

You've taken on a lot of responsibility, to your sister & to your parents;
be as kind to yourself as you have been to others, be patient with yourself, give yourself *time*.

Again, I'm so very sorry, & I wish you the very best.

Hi Peggy I love hearing from a FL zone 10 rose grower! It sounds like you had the summer we did, like walking on the surface of the sun...and it continues, 94 yesterday and 93 for today...non-stop heat and still we have no rain. I am considering containers but am trying to figure whether it is worth the effort to do it and have the roses die due to lack of rainfall (as yours did) when we are on a long vacation. DH has gotten involved and we are considering having the well investigated for potential deepening. Cost is an issue. I am considering not using the irrigation at all and mulching heavily, using drought resistant florida natives for the bulk of the landscaping and keeping the roses that have survived thus far. My thinking, which may be wrong, is that the irrigation did more harm than help with it's high salt content. I think that most of my plants might have survived the drought but that the saline water hurt them at a time that there was no rainfall. The baby roses would have been goners no matter what (drought, salty irrigation). That's a lesson learned the hard way. Water conservation is an issue, as you know, in Florida and I heartily support less use on yards. My dilemma is how to make the changes and keep my roses, that I so much love. I once put a broccoli seedling on my railing and went to gather some stuff up before I went outside to plant it. I came back to find my sweet little girl cat (right now purring in my lap) helping herself to a nice fresh salad. Grr! Cats like broccoli?? Most humans don't like broccoli, and cats are carnivores! I took the seedling back up to put it under lights where it could grow another leaf or two before I planted it. It's doing fine, actually. So's the cat. I did not kill her. She's too cute. I just yelled at her. My spare room is a cat-free zone. That's where my quilting, my plants, my crocheting, and all those other delicate items stay, and the cats aren't allowed in. My thoughts and sympathies re: the Virginia Tech shootings. I have a similar back yard. I'm from Colorado.

My darling husband passed away 15 days ago. We knew each other for 8 years. He was very vibrant and full of life, had a good job house and car. Internally though he was suffering from chronic depression and was addicted to alcohol for many years even before i knew him. It got worse when he lost his mother 3 years ago. He would constantly talk about killing himself, praying that God would take his life. It was like seeing him die everyday. I prayed that he comes out of his depression, went to the psychiatrist to get meds for him, put him in rehab, gave him unconditional love but nothing seemed to work. He stopped eating and would just drink and watch the tv the whole day and night. Any attempt at communication was met with silence. He did not want to talk about anything. He gradually became so weak that he was bed ridden. I would coax him to eat or at least have some soup or juice but it was an uphill task. 3 years and 10 hospitalizations later he is no more. His body and organs were so weak that it could not process any medicines. I just wish that he would be alive today maybe he would have made an effort at living. People tell me that he is free from his worries and depression. I hope he is finally at peace. People say that your love was one sided but i know that he loved me and needed me. He would feel more depressed when i was not around him. I would call him my sunflower. In the end i feel he could not help himself. I miss my darling a lot.

Thanks everyone! pecanpie- purr fect pet- LOL love it, funny! flyleft- our local shelter runs a website updated every 20 minutes, they detail photo (usually) age/sex etc and temperment/overview including things like 'not suitable with children' 'used to dogs'. I started looking on the website about 8 weeks ago and when he came up I thought he sounded like he had a great personality. They close for the public at 4.30pm Friday and this was 10 to 5pm Friday. Needless to say we were there waiting at 10.30 on the dot Saturday waiting for them to open! DD clicked with him straight away and when I explained the situation the staff thought he'd be perfect. The funny thing that happened was another different cat came up to DD at the cage door and was all gooey and purring and the staff we amazed as this other cat apparently hates children! LOL my DD is a cat magnet! Bill- siamese? his eyes are quite oriental -and yes flyleft he is a talker. Thanks for all the well wishes! Em and DD

God bless you. There is nothing more that you could have done. Don't let the enemy trick you into thinking this was your fault. Be strong and think of how she would want you to move forward.

I have to start by saying that I have never joined a forum in my life. I saw this and felt pulled to do so for about two days prior to giving in.

I just want to support you in your grieving because your story is my story. My sister overdosed on 6/13/13. She had mental illness(bipolar and addiction), was 28 weeks pregnant at the time, and "they" were taking her off her meds the past month due to the pregnancy.

I became a counselor 16 years ago in a sole effort to help her. It worked for many years and then she is gone. Just like that. I am not working as of 07/03/13. I can't think of anything else, so like you the burden of guilt and sorrow is consuming. (yes, I have been to alanon for years) Grief changes everything for me and I can't even begin to describe what it is like for my parents.

I guess I wanted to tell you that someone really "knows." I found some help in the book entitled "Surviving The Death of an Adult Sibling" by TJ Wray. She also has a website and forum.

The book addresses the sibling connection and how in some cases it falls under "disenfranchised grief." I feel that becoming a counselor in order to understand and better help my baby sister takes it to a new level. I feel like such a fraud and a failure...in so many ways.

I hope you are OK and that you are getting support from those that know you best. I can't say how this is supposed to get better or different but hang in there.

hi my best friend has lost her sister to suicide she was 8 months pregnant when she passed away my friend is beside her self and is feeling lost and alone like this has never happened to anyonr else juat wondering if any one who had been through similar would be willing to chat to her via email or any way you feel comfortable i am trying to fo everything i can but feel ot may help to speak to someone who has experienced somthig similar x
