What killed my lovebird ?

Yesterday when I glanced into the cage where I keep 2 mated pairs of lovebirds, I saw that one of them was dead, his neck broken. This one & it's mate decided to set up housekeeping in the "birdie hut", while the other, older pair have occupied the nestbox. Poor baby was laying half in & half out of the doorway. I cannot get that image out of mind, and I'm very concerned about the safety of the other one. Later in the day I saw the mate trying to eat out of the food cup, and one of the others quickly came out of the nestbox & shooed her away. This happened twice while I watched....BTW, I'm not sure whether it was the the male or female which died; I'm thinking that will make a difference in whether I choose to leave him/her in that cage, or move it into another cage with other lovebirds. Any insight anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated, as I am not a lovebird expert.
