"What's new and exciting in the orchid world?" Who knows! We've been down in Florida for 5 months trying to find a house, still looking. Took a few plants along for the ride and its a whole new growing experience for us all. Essex is great. You have to have more light than before. How exciting for you, I'm sure you'll have tons of space to enlarge your collection. I like your idea of a greenhouse. Maybe you can connect it to the house and it would make life easier in the winter. I flowered Catts in West, S/W light. They spent the summer outside. I supplemented with CFL's when they came in. The flowering was iffy but with HID's you shouldn't have a problem. Thanks for the compliment on that Twinkle. Most of my orchids took off in Florida even with neglect. Lost all my Masdes from the heat as well as the Phals. They melted. But everything else is having a ball. I'm at a total loss with the cultural difference here...watering, potting mix, heat. I often stay up late at night, don't get up till near noon, so am good to go throughout the afternoon. However, when a youth on the farm, sometimes when cultivating a field a half mile or a mile long ... ... about 2 or so in the afternoon, on a warm, sunny day, the cultivating marks would tend to start weaving back and forth: on the right track sometimes ... and nearly on it sometimes. Time to lie on the soft ground by the rear wheel of the tractor for a 10 - 20 min. nap ... ... then be in great shape for the rest of the afternoon. For a Frugal Fella like me, the current habit of using the light through the night ... ... and sleeping through half of the day, filled with precious sunlight, seems rather an unfrugal habit. Sue used to say that I could sleep any time ... and any place. I note that I can swig a mug o' coffee half an hour before going to bed ... and drop off to sleep with no problem. I am happy and oh, so fortunate to have a very accomodating body, it seems. ole joyful

They sell plants, fish and garden accoutrements, but they have a beautiful setting near Sugarloaf mountain with acres of ponds to walk around. It's a great place for birding, too. We've seen bald eagles there. C&O Canal Towpath in Montgomery County, Md: If you like wildflowers, take a walk in April or May on the C&O Canal Towpath from Riley's Lock or off Sycamore Landing at the end of River Road in Montgomery County, MD. Even in March, bloodroot are everywhere, and later there are wild phlox, Virginia bluebells, Dutchman's breeches, etc, in profusion. Birding is excellent in the spring there, too. Paca was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and this is a restoration of his 18th-century garden, complete with parterres, a knot garden, a pond and a small observatory. They have a wonderful plant sale each March where you can get heirloom plants for cheap: historic veggies, Lady Banks roses, hyacinth bean vines, Job's Tears, bronze fennel, several kinds of old-style hollyhock, and so forth, all for $2-$4 each. It's off Prince George Street in downtown Annapolis. Aside from the open house during the sales, tours of the house and garden are about $8, and well worth it. They do sell plants, but have beautiful display gardens for strolling. Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden: is also a lovely small garden in Annapolis, Md. It's only 5 acres. I can't rate it as I've never been there personally, but have seen it on TV. Ah, time to travel! Woodend Bird Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, Md is an historic site with 40 acres and dates back to 1699. The Mansion on site dates from about 1925 and was designed by John Russell Pope. This is the headquarters of the Audubon Naturalist Society. (Not really a garden. Some of the grounds are landscaped but mostly it is kept wild for birdwatching. They do have nice events, including a Winter Crafts Fair in early December...the ed.) You can proceed to the Smithsonian's museums on the Mall from there. There's a nice rose garden that you can view when in bloom (from afar, no gate entry) behind the Executive Building by the Ellipse. Also view the old specimen trees that have plaques in the area. Some of these are very rare and OLD. The grounds of the White House are not too shabby either, but only to be viewed from the public areas. It has a wonderful fountain (by Bartholdi of Statue of Liberty fame), and a fantastic garden. My DH and I used to eat lunch there several times a week and made friends with the gardeners. They grow a lot of new hybrids and are extremely knowledgeable (and sometimes share). There are quite a few worthwhile gardening programs in the Botanical Gardens - check their schedule. Anyone actually seen the place? **** Monticello: I went down to Charlottesville last October for a Thursday-night stay in a local B&B, then spent Friday at Monticello. It was definitely the way to go, and the place was not near as crowded as on weekends. The gardeners were very friendly once they realized I had a clue, and graciously allowed me to harvest a small number of seeds to take home. Twinleaf, the resident historical-plant nursery, sells period seeds, gardening implements and plants, but they are far from cheap. Chanticleer: We recently discovered Chanticleer, in Wayne, PA (just a little northwest of Philadelphia, right off the PA Turnpike). It's a small (30 acres?) garden on an old estate, very hilly, and contains a house (open to tour occasionally) with gorgeous landscaping and pool/fountains, woodland gardens, a huge pond full of lotus, a "ruin" garden built on the base of an old stone home, veggies, annuals, grasses, perennials. It is truly a great way to spend about 2-3 hours, and they encourage you to walk on the grass and sit on the lawn furniture! What a wonderful place to refresh your soul and view 60 acres of naturalistic gardens and views. There's a tram with narration one can take or just stroll the grounds. Well worth an overnight stay. The tour of the mansion was extremely interesting as well.

I was worried about foxes and cats, but they really do not hunt them. As I did research, I found that foxes don't want anything that fights back. I had a 6 lb manx Kitty that looked like a little bunny and I worried and worried about her when I spotted my first fox here. One day, she was sleeping on a small deck in my back yard (no railings) and I saw the fox approaching from the forest behind the house. I watched to see what would happen, (I was in the house but near the door to the deck and her) believing I could save her if he looked like he might grab her. She saw him approach and raised her head, but did not move from her spot and did not appear alarmed. He saw her when she raised her head and they looked right at each other, while he just kept on walking around the house. She went right back to sleep! It appeared they had an agreement of some kind. Another time she was lounging under my chair in the garden, with me in it. The fox saw her (maybe a different one) and tried to figure out how to get to her without her seeing (he seemed to be ignoring me). She wasn't asleep but was rolling around on her back looking for tummy scratches. He was walking up from the side; she flopped over and saw him and shot out after him - he flew out of the yard with her in pursuit. She came back to her spot and he tried it again, and she took off after him again. He then took a very circuitous route around the house, avoiding the area she was in. After that I never worried and she lived to be 18. I also saw a fox chase the neighbor's young cat around my house. That worried me until I heard a big fuss and here they came back around with the kitty chasing the fox. So I don't think you have to worry about cats and foxes. It's the coyotes and owls that are the worry...and cougars if you have them nearby.
