I miss my Pal, best friend, Father.

My father died 21 years ago when I was 19. We lived together (my Mother had split up with him) and I stayed with him. Time helps but it doesn't heal. I still find it terribly difficult to talk about it all, and when I do find someone who I can open up to ... they seem to just fade away. He died a horrible death (as if there could be a good one !!) from Cancer. I miss him terribly, and wish he could see the things I have achieved and done. He was my Teacher at school until I was 17. In many ways far more than just a Father. I love hime dearly.

I'm so sorry for the pain you still are experiencing. How did you deal with your loss at the time it happened? I wonder if you didn't deal with it at all and maybe that is why it still hurts so much? I really can't say, just a thought. If that is the case you may need counseling to help you and you may have to approach it as if it just happened? Regardless, I hope you find your peace somehow. My Dad died 8 years ago from the complications of Alzheimer's and, like cancer, that is a horrible, horrible ending. By the time of his death he couldn't communicate with us, couldn't eat, couldn't do anything but lay there and make a constant noise that I can't even describe. My husband's death was sudden and unexpected and I have to say that I am glad he didn't suffer for long if at all. I just had a thought: why don't you see if in your community there is a bereavement group that meets. Usually there is a contact and you could maybe call and see if they think it would be ok for you to come even though it has been a while since your loss. After all, there really is no end to a loss, is there? It's pretty much there forever. Good luck to you -

I can certainly understand the pain still being there even after 21 years. I just don't feel that it is abnormal. When we love someone so very much, it's so hard to live without them. I think it's especially hard if our memories are tainted with horrible circumstances surrounding their deaths. My 19 year old daughter was killed senselessly trying to save a dog's life and my mom left us this past June 3 from an Alzheimer's related trauma. My life will never be the same and I'm sure that even after 21 years I will still feel the sting.

Sandy, I'm a newbie to WS, and was checking out this entire site when I came across your post. My heart just aches for you. Four years ago my ex-husband committed suicide. It was the worst thing I have ever gone through- I cried everyday for months. We had been divorced for 4 years (his choice- he felt that it would solve all of his problems), and I had by then moved on with my life. But it just stirred up so many emotions and pained me to think that he was in that much misery. It is such a helpless feeling, and leaves all sorts of unanswered questions. For months I would see people that resembled him and would have to look twice because I still expected him to be alive. I had difficulty letting my car idle in my garage even for a few seconds because it reminded me of how he took his life. But I can tell you that through it all God was sovereign and eventually gave me tremendous peace through my tears. Are you familiar with Michael W. Smith's song "Breathe"? ...It starts out, "This is the air I breathe..." Soon after the suicide our worship leader in church told the story of how Michael W. Smith wrote that song after his own close friend committed suicide. It's a song that has really helped me focus on God and rely on Him for everything. Patricia, My Mother died the same exact way as yours. She had been suffering with a stiff neck for a couple of weeks. On Monday (June 4, 2007) she went to the hospital to get it checked. On Wednesday (6th) we found out she had liver cancer. It had spread to her adrenial glands, lungs and into her neck. On Sunday (10th) she was gone. She too went peacefully in her sleep. I know what you went through, she went really fast. Although this is all still new to me, I too feel your pain. Grieving is not easy for me right now. I smelt saukraut (sp?) the other day and thought it was kind of funny as I was driving down the road. I close my eyes and see her smiling face but yet I can not cry. Her services are this coming week end (17th/18th) and she is being buried on my son's (her grandson's) birthday. He is taking it so hard, but there is nothing I can do. I have talked till I was blue in the face and can not gt my brother to budge. I just hope I have the strength to go through this. With God's help we wil get through this. My mother passed away April 13th 2022. she raised me and my sister, as a single mother. she worked 2 jobs to ptovide for us, but we took her for granted as children. When the mother of my 2 children passed away in 2016, my mother moved in with us. My mother helped raise my daughter(16 now) and my son(15 now) for almost a decade. My mother was more than just my best friend, she was my only friend. i have complex PTSD, and she was the only one that i trusted enough to talk about the war with… she went with me to the VA, when i had to. she gave me strength, she always seemed to understand things that other people either couldnt or didnt want to understand… my dog died about a month before my mother did… 2022 has taken a lot from me and my 2 children… they saw her as a mother, as much as me… i go from feeling numb to feeling deep sadness and loss… i don‘t want to give up, but i always needed her support. she died from cancer, after being on immunotherapy for 2 years… she suffered from many side effects, for most of her treatment. she became so thin near the end that it was painful to see her like that… i was with her until the end, and it may sound strange but i held her for some time after she died and just sobbed onto her… i talk to her still thst she is dead for months, but i still wake up thinking that she is alive… i beli my mother is in heaven, but selfishly i just want my mom back… i miss my only friend… i miss the only selfless person that i ever met… i feel so empty, and i did not think that id feel so lost… she gave me direction when i didnt know what to do… i hope this posts, it does give comfort to know that i am not a

You are not alone. My mother died almost 20 years ago of pancreatic cancer, I was only 24 with 2 small boys. We were very very close. I think sometimes when certain things happen in our lives we miss them more. I still have a terrible ache for my mom to this day that will never go away. I lost my dad a year 1/2 ago and watched the strongest man I know suffer.
On Thanksgiving this year we lost our 12 year old nephew to a drunk driver and I realized something, that if you love someone the pain is the same at any age. Without grief we don't know love and I think that is a good thing, to know you were loved and that you loved back is most important of all.
This is a good site to post your feelings you are not alone.
