Rejection by grandchild

I have recently been rejected by my 21-month-old grandchild. I have gone from favored person in her life.....often preferring me over mom and dad. Suddenly, and in a one-week period she has quit coming to me, isn't happy to see me (often saying "no no" and crying). I am trying to understand. Nothing has changed....same routines, etc. She even hit me a few times when I wasn't even interacting with her.....just sitting in chair in the same room. She goes to everyone else as always....happy to see them! I am heart-broken.

Have you talked to her mom or dad to find out what is going on in her life. Maybe someone with hair your color caused her to be leery of anyone resembling them.

Maybe she was left with a babysitter about your age and it did not go well. Many things could be in the making of the changes.

Please do not be hurt by a 21 month old, they go through many stages. They sometimes will become more clingy to parents and reject others.

My grandchildren would always go to my husband before they would to me. Some people have that thing that little ones are attracted to.

Do not push toward them, let them warm up to you over time. I have been through this and know what you are going through. Sooner or later your granddaughter will come around again and be your best buddy!

I think it has to do with the parents.I have grown grands Forthy and older who treat me the same way.Never found out why.I leave them in the hands of the Lord.

The only grandparent I have that’s still alive is my dad’s mother but I don’t have any grandparents. I’m 22 years old. My mother’s father was coward who killed himself when my mom was 3. And she was forced to grow up without her father. And her mother did a horrible job raising her. But my mother is a wonderful woman. She never left me or my siblings in times of need and raised us to be mature responsible adults. And she is a hard worker. Her mother was there for a little of our life and abandoned us when I was really young. Not even 10...that had to be hard for my mom to fill the void. My father’s side was great until my aunt was born. His father died when I was 2, my brother was 6, and when my sister was 8. My dad was only 27 at the time, but he is a great man. He worked hard for decades to provide for 3 kids, and a wife. He was never afraid to be the bad guy if that’s what it took to teach us what we needed to know. And he never stops showing us love when we need him. I’ve had the best parents I could’ve ever had or asked for. But my father’s mother is the worst. She was never there for me or my brother and never even met my sister. I invited her to my graduation party (only because mom told me to) she said she was gonna come and she lied. Not even a congratulations card. I finally told her I was done. I gave her another chance after her mother died but I didn’t even get a half a try. She never called, never asked if I was doing alright in this time of the coronavirus. So I finally deleted her number. she doesn’t deserve to be part of the life a man who’s engaged and has a double bachelor’s. Or a man who is working on a music career. Sometimes I wish I could spit in her face. She is not grandmother of mine, or my siblings. And never told her own son that she was proud of him. That has to hurt my father to the core, maybe that’s partially why he’s such a hard worker, because his efforts were never enough. Not to his own mother anyway.

Didn't I say, "Non-stop"? My husband will be back home tonight, so I still do not know how the meeting went. However, here are new findings about SD's life style, just learnt this morning. The SD has obtained another credit card since her old debt was paid off by her ex a year ago, and made several payments on two cards this month, which sums up to $9,000. All the payments were solid figures like, "$2,000, $4,000", ball park. Now I don't know how much she owes. However, it is way over her monthly income. (Don't even ask me why I got this info. Long story.) In the mean time, she tans herself regularly and gets her French nails perfectly done. Oh, yes. I am venting now. During her college years, the SD spent out support money to get breast augmentation to look like Pamela A. (her idle) and hired a personal trainer to participate in a body building competition. No wonder she could not finish the schooling. Even though she came home with enormous breasts, my husband and her older brother (SS) were both in big time denial, saying, "She always had the figure." The SD comes home and stays with us w/baby on holidays or in summer. At first, my husband warned me not to give the SD hard time with rules and discipline, as she should relax and take good rest from her single-mom life. Then, she took off to downtown all day to party and hang around with friends, and came home like 4:00 a.m. She slept in until 2:00 p.m. only to get ready for another partying. Wife of my SS (visiting then) got very mad about SS and my husband's defensive attitude for SD, as we were taking care of SD's baby all the time. We confronted the boys and gradually made SD to stay w/her baby. SD totally believed that she was giving us an opportunity to have a quality time with her baby??? Whatever that is, I cannot have her back here to be a full time student. She will leave the baby to us (me) and either study, sleep, party, etc, like normal STUDENTS do. I am not sure about this "upgrading her education for her future career opportunity" idea. The lost income and cost of living for two years is very expensive. Landing on any better paycheck to pay off all the lost money and keep up with her life style will never happen. Anyhow, I am not looking forward to seeing my husband tonight, only to have another friction about the SD's plan... BIG SIGH.

Some people do not have the energy to deal with toddlers. I was with a friend with children the same age as your toddlers, and it is exhausting and all consuming. The two year old kept running to the stairs (even though the child could not do stairs) and the mom kept bringing the child to another area to play, but the child kept trying to go on back to the stairs. When the mom would pick the child up, the child would kick and scream and cry (AKA a major temper tantrum) returning again and again for the stairs. The mom was trying to visit with friends, and have a conversation, and the child made this impossible. At the same time, she was trying to keep and eye on her 3 year old who kept wandering off. Some people just do not enjoy babies and toddlers, and do not feel comfortable being responsible for someone else's toddlers. Friends would take turns watching each others toddler, while the other ran errands. After doing it a few times, it stopped, as the one child would scream for the entire 2 hours. No amount of distraction or toys helped. One of the friends said that the few hour break was not worth the price of having to return the favor and watch a child who cried so much. Toddlers take enormous energy, and you have to focus on them every minute. It is one thing when they are your children. It is another thing entirely when they belong to someone else. Trust her and try not to take it personally. Several years from now (5 or so) if they still leave your children out, then you may want to talk to them. But for now, don't force your toddlers on someone who is not willing. Perhaps you can do somethings with them bringing the toddlers, so that a relationship begins to develop, but you are there to help if your children cry or wander off. At some point, they may feel up to the challenge of an outing with one or both of your young children. This may have "nothing" to do with their step child versus your children, and have everything to do with the fact that some people are uncomfortable with babies and toddlers. Wait and see as your children become more self sufficient (around age 7-8) if they are included. If they are not, then I imagine it will be their loss. Many people simply do not have the energy to enjoy taking such young children out on outings. The others are right in that with the toddlers along, they would be unable to focus on the older grandchild. You yourself must know many parents who cannot even go out to dinner and actually enjoy it with toddlers. The child wants out of the high chair, and then is running around the restaurant, or will not go in the high chair and is crying if made to sit in a high chair. Or one of the parents is walking around outside with the toddler, while the other parent finishes eating., etc. Not a relaxing dinner out by any stretch of the imagination, for anyone. So again, try not to take it personally right now. Respect their discomfort being responsible for someone else's toddlers, and do not try and force them into something they are clearly uncomfortable with.

I'm already thinking about my next dood but my husband isn't so sure-he's perusing the rescue cats ;) They do have mini and medium-doods as well. Mine is non-shedding but there is no guarantee, some have straighter coats and they will shed. Purebred Portuguese Water Dogs like Bo and Sunny are very popular around here as well, also have curly hair coats. I think they can be a handful. They only get to medium size and often have lovely colors. One thing I love about Penny is how goofy she is. She bounces everywhere (very slow runner because she runs like pepe le pew). Also I think her muzzle is going to turn out to be too narrow for her body (poodle muzzle on a golden body). So basically she's gonna look weird. She would not be suitable for someone who likes beautiful dignified dogs. You can see the muzzle problem in this photo. It was enlightening hanging out with my foster dog (GORGEOUS brindle shepherd-pit mix) as she was a real show stopper and people crossed the street to meet her based on looks. If I were to get a purebred GSD I would check dam and sire carefully for the cant of the back. It is my personal belief that the steeply sloping back that is currently in vogue is very bad for the hips and legs. Dysplasia is no fun. I think this change in conformation is part of the reason Belgian Malinois' are getting more popular, although my impression is that they are a lot of dog and can be difficult to satisfy their working drive and energy needs. A woman at my work has a Malinois a bit older than my pup and he is still fully in land shark mode, mine has already calmed down a lot. I would never go for a Mali myself as I would be a terrible owner for a hard headed, extremely intelligent, extreme high energy dog. I knew I needed a soft dog and picked a soft puppy for that reason. Signing up for working-dog drive is a big commitment. My sister's sled dog (malamute GSD mix) was impossible to keep up with and very hard to live with for the first 18 mos. Multiple runs per day were not enough.

Babies and children go thru stages. I to have been rejected at various times by my grandkids, but have worked things out. We cannot blame the parents for everything, but we can talk things out--sometimes. The kids today are exposed to so much more that we were ever. They see and hear things at a very young age that we did not know until we were married with kids. We to have to listen and with me, if my granddaughters have their electronic stuff glued to there ear, I just laugh and ask them about some of the stuff they have. That is called communication.

I have a question for other Grandparents. I was alone raising my children so I was not able to save a lot of money and now that I am on Medicare, I am not able to take my 5 Grandkids places. Their Grandfather, my ex and his wife never gave much support to our children and now they have the time and money to take the Grandkids everywhere and I never get to see them. They act like I am nobody and just want to be with the other Grandparents. The kids are 17-3 and I have tried to plan visits but they never want to be with me. I can't compete with money to take them where they want to go. My children know this but make no effort to bring them over or plan me in much. Does any one else have this problem? It makes me so sad. I can't force them to want to be with me. What would others do or say in my case? Thank you.

to OP - my son is 20 months old and he started to pinch me, hit me, bite me. Does not do this to my husband, so it is just me. It only happens once or twice a day, other times he loves to play with me, runs to me, calls for me, even cries when I go to bathroom - he thinks I am leaving him? Anyways, give a kid (20+ months old) time to re-discover you. Take him to a playground and swing and catch him as he slides down the slide.

I am experiencing rejection from my 2 1/2 yr old granddaughter too. She is sweet and loving with everyone else it seems, but either just ignores me or actually will yell at me, push me away, etc. it is very upsetting and difficult to handle. Amazing to me how such a little person can rock your world. I'm hoping time will help, but I feel like I'm walking on eggshells around her now so she doesn't get mad at me. I'm going to try more little gifts, fun times, laughing off her rejection, etc.

My 2 1/2 yr old grandson pushes me away or tells me to get out of his room. He gravitates to my husband. When I try to do something for him he asks for his grandfather or mother. I am very affectionate with him and try to play or read to him and believe I am very kind towards him. This makes me and my husband feel awful. His parents try to help and feel bad for me as well.

Kids do that. My own DD used to tell me she wanted Dad, not me, at times. I wouldn't let it get to you. The more fuss you make about it, the greater a sense of power he will unconsciously get from doing it, so just don't react. Do cool things on your own that might entice him to want to join you.

Hello everyone, I too am being rejected by my 2 yr old grandaughter after being her favorite and yes it hurt at first, but now I think I understand, i think it has something to do with breastfeeding because my daughter had been trying to ween her. I just feel the only female she wants to be around is her mommy because with my husband baby's still close and affectionate so I believe after weening is over ill get my baby back

This has been part of my life . My granddaughter told me she doesn’t love me I have tried everything she is 9 she has been like that since she was 3 . I give her everything defend her but still I guess she just hates me . Her brother with autism adores me so since she adores him she is jealous I can’t think of any other reason . Very sad grandma !
