You might talk to your husband about how you fear he might have sleep apnea. You need him to see a doctor for his health and to ease your mind because sleep apnea is potentially serious and it sounds a lot more impressive than 'snoring.'

I think he should be willing to see a doctor, so I'm thinking maybe he thinks 'snoring' is a trivial problem. Maybe to him it would be like seeing a doctor because a really unseemly or embarrassing problem. Further, he may not realize that his snoring may be disrupting the quality of his own sleep.

This is short and sweet. When the man I've been with for a number of years starts to snore it's because he flipped onto his back. So I'll give him a nudge and say,"you're snoring" then he'll flip over onto his side and then he's quiet. Also, at times I'll wear earplugs and that helps tremendously (get the good plugs).

I want to thank Taylor and Nancy for their response...I appreciate it so much. In reply to his sleeping on his back, I wish it were that easy but he snores in any and all positions.!! I had tried ear plugs but couldn't stand them. I'm interested in knowing what would be the best kind to buy. It seems like a good solution if I could adapt to them. What a nice feeling it is to be able to share with you all out there...you're great.!!

My sympathy goes out to you. My husbands snoring got so bad that my ears actually hurt. Your are right that snoring can occur in any position. And perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad if it was the same sound but it was constantly changing.

The snoring was louder than I would play the radio or TV. Even in a queen size bed I was right next to the noise. I know it was so loud it actually damaged his own hearing.

When I started sleeping most nights in the family room he got the idea he needed to do something. He finally went to a sleep specialist after we saw a special on the local news. My husband had a procedure called a somnoplasty. He actually had it done 3 times. Sound waves are used to toughen up the back portion of the palate.

This is not a procedure that can be done if the actual problem is sleep apnea. The procedure caused a very sore throat each time for several days. I can tell you it made a world of difference. Although he still snores, the snoring is more like audible breathing and no longer keeps me awake or wakes me up.

If he refuses to go to a doctor then you will need to do whatever it takes to protect your own hearing. You need to get regular sleep.

Dear Barbara: I want to thank you for your reply. At this point I can't talk my hubby into seeing a doctor about his snoring problem...I think he's afraid that it might envolve an operation. I think a lot of his problem is caused because he always breathes through his mouth...never his nose and it seems like there could be a blockage and that's what I think he's worried about. In the meantime, it's seperate bedrooms until we figure something out. Once again, I want to thank you all for taking the time to send your thoughts and suggestions...I appreciate you.

There is an answer other than operation; it's called a
C-pap. Ask your doctor to explain it to your husband.

I put a loud fan on the dresser in our room, the "white noise" drowns him out a little which makes it easier on me. Years ago I would put a tape recorder on my side of the bed and play a tape recording of the ocean waves, cannot find the tape, but it really helped.

My husband also snored. He passed away 10 years ago and I would love to still have him by me and snoring. It would b nice to here it again. Somtimes it bothered me but in the long run it was worth every snore. Have your husband have acheck up by the dr. If it isn"t anything serious just put some ear plugs in your ears and be glad that you can reach out to him at night.

EAR PLUGS DON'T WORK AT ALL, LAST WEEK I BOUGHT A SMALL SOUND BOX..OCEAN WAVES, RAIN, NIGHT WOODS SOUND AND ALOVELY SOUNDING BROOK..DID IT WORK NO NOT AT ALL. INEED SLEEP TOO,SOOOOOO I USE THE EMPTY ROOM. GOOD LUCK. EILEEN

You don't mention if he is overweight, a smoker or drinks on a nightly basis. If so, then he may be afraid that a dr. will tell him to change his unhealthy habits. In the meantime, tape his snoring, then play it back to him. He will be astonished at the sound and may accuse you of turning the volume way up. I don't think it would hurt for you to say that it is his turn to sleep in the guest room. I would find a sleep clinic or specialist so when he is ready to address the problem you can tell him whom to call.

oh my gosh, your guy might have sleep apnea which is a serious condition. Please get him medical attention from a pulmonary or neurology specialist.

It's been awhile and nothing has changed with my husband but I guess that old saying "what goes around, comes around" is true. My DH has been enjoying sleeping (and snoring) in the guest room but we've had some company lately so we're back sleepng to-gether....and in the meantime I've developed the 'restless legs syndrome" which is about to drive me amd DH crazy.!!! So, I guess you could say our problem is solved, we definately need seperate bedrooms.!!! But I would sure appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions on how to cure the RLS. Dear, please enjoy each second of his snoring!! I lost my husband of 54 wonderful years three years ago, and what I wouldn't give just to hear him snore one more time. You see, I snored,too, (didn't believe until he taped me one night). I found that I had allergies, then took 25 mg. of Benadryl at night and fell asleep first, so his snoring didn't bother me after that.

I know alot of people have told you this but he had better get to the doctor before he dies. It sure souunds to me like he has sleep apena. Has he read all the responses you have gotten about this. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. If he gives a hoot about you he will go.Can't he see the handwriting on the wall??? Sounds like he is kinda stubborn to me. My heart goes out to you.

I went through the same exact problem with my husband of 36 years. He refused to do anything for years until our son (a physician) told him he had apnea (a very dangerous condition). He finally got a C-Pap machine and it has been a life saver. After spending many nights sleeping in separate bedrooms and him waking up with a headache every morning...he is now feeling so much better and we are sleeping in the same bed!
I sympathize with the ladies who have lost their husbands and would give anything to hear them snore again...but this may be a dangerous health risk for your husband. I hope he listens! Good luck!

My son uses those new nose strips and is now "snoreless". You can get them in the market.

I read a web site lately where the woman's husband used the nose strips, then ran out of them. She had him put a piece of Scotch tape across his nose and it seemed to work as well as the nose strip. Just a thougt.

Loving your husband doesn't mean loving his snoring. I have sleep problems and it is not due to snoring just can't sleep at this time in my life. I wish solving it were as easy as moving to another room, I would do it in a flash and I love my husband.

My husbands snoring drove me up the wall until I started using ear plugs. I use the little yellow foam ones. You can get them at a drug stores, but will probably find them cheaper at hardware stores. They took a little while to get used to. There are times that they fall out while I am sleeping, so I keep a pill bottle full of them tied to my bedpoast.

My husband snores too so I make him sleep downstairs.I told him he could come back to bed when he buys some snore strips but he hasn't bought any after about 3 months so I'm thinking of visiting a solicitor about a divorce.Can you apply for a divorce on the grounds of unreasonable snoring?Luv Jain

Sleep Apnea only involves surgery if the case is REALLY severe. Otherwise, the doctor will have your husband wear a machine called a CPAP (I don't know what it stands for)--it's sort of a face mask that forces a gentle stream of air into your husbands mouth/nose to keep his airway open at night.

In addition to the lack of sleep you're getting, your husband is lackign sleep as well. In addition to snoring, Sleep Apnea causes your husband to wake up several, possibly hundreds of times per night because when he's snoring, he's loosing oxygen in his brain. Have you noticed that he'll snore then stop breathing then make a "Snork" type sound? He makes that 'snork', or really loud snore because he's starting to breathe again.

This is a VERY serious medical condition. I know because just last week I went to a sleep lab to be tested for Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea can cause heart attacks, storkes, as well as death because sometimes he'll stop breathing and not start back up.

If your husband had to get surgery, it would be less invasive than getting your tonsils taken out. In fact, it's usually an outpatient surgery where they just 'nip' away a part of the back of his throat. Do you notice that he's overly tired during the daytime? Does he have problems concentrating and staying awake? Is he overweight? If he is overweight (which sleep apena most often affects men, and of those men, most are overweight), you could suggest a light exercise program because weight loss WILL help sleep apnea.

Above all, you really should strongly suggest that your husband see a doctor. Like I said, when I went in for my sleep lab, i was afraid of the surgery too, but that's only done when NOTHING ELSE works. The CPAP is the most often prescribed method to "cure" sleep apnea. Let him know that it REALLY is in his best interest to see a doctor.

I got the first GOOD NIGHT of sleep in 25 years last week. It was great to wake up and feel like I had actually slept. It will do you wonders as far as being able to sleep, as well as your husband for being able to live!

Here's my two cents. Married 28 years to an insomniac and snorer. Well, he didn't snore for about the first fifteen years, but now my husband has sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, so I had to move to another room. He has had surgery (removed the uvula in the back of his throat, but it was an experimental operation and didn't help much.) He also recently tried the CPAP machine, but hated it.

Other habits: He likes action movies (blood and guts...) and likes to turn on the light and read at all hours of the night, and that wakes me up. He is currently on Ambien for insomnia -- takes 1/2 tablet 1 hour before bedtime for sleep and also uses Mirapex for restless legs. He's drinking chamomile tea before bedtime. These things help a little but not completely. During the night, he kicks and rubs his arms, talks in his sleep and wiggles a lot,and we both have a good deal of internal flatulence/gas. Weird! I still love him and we get together to snuggle (!)and watch TV. Then I go to my own room and SLEEP! Hey, it's a life... but you have to look out for your own health. You should get your husband to see a doctor and perhaps the outcome will be better for you. Good luck!

This can be a serious problem. My DH is a loud snorer, too. He lost about 25 lbs and it does help, but he also has to sleep on his side. He also snores a lot worse when his back or neck is out of alignment. So there are a lot of causes of snoring and sleep apnea is one of them.

DH lost his uncle, the man who basically raised him, to complications of sleep apnea 4 yrs ago. He was only 54 yrs old. It is hard to imagine. I always thought he was older, but most of his problems were caused by not being able to sleep well. He had a cpap machine, but he waited so long to do something at all that it had time to do a lot of damage to his heart and brain. He would fall asleep driving and stop breathing any time he dozed off. It is a terrible thing to lose someone you care about because they refuse to take care of themselves.

I hope that you can talk your husband into getting his snoring checked out. Maybe a chiropractor can help, but maybe he can also (if your husband will listen) get him to understand that it is doing damage to every system in his body.

In the meantime, you will have to take care of yourself. If you are not getting proper rest, you cannot deal with anything clearly. There are many ways of getting help with RLS. The doctor can prescribe medication and there are herbal supplements that help with it as well. I also found out, through a brief spell of it myself, that taking an epsom salt soak will help with it. The magnesium in the salts will help to relax the muscles. Potassium, calcium and magnesium have to be in proper balance in your muscles for them to work properly.

I hope you get the relief you need from the snoring and the RLS.
