Kitchen flooring - tearing my hair out!

We're re-doing the kitchen with white cabinets and black appliances. They granite is grayish so I need color and it should come from the flooring.

I wanted tile for ease of cleaning and aesthetic but with a bad back I've been warned away from a hard surface like that.

Laminate and vinyl are soft and easy enough but I really need something attractive to bring color into the room. "Colorful" vinyl / laminate looks silly to me, like it belongs in a child's play room. I can't find any elegance or warmth in it.

That leads to Brazilian Cherry or Mahogany, both of which have rich red tones.

I was settling on an engineered brazilian cherry when our GC said we'd be sorry with how fast it wears out and to buy solid hardwood.

Today I went into the tile place about my bathroom floors. When the saleswoman heard I was putting wood in my kitchen she said I'd be really, really sorry. "Drop butter on it, see what happens."

I'm so tired of the contradictions! I really need some experienced, un-biased help.

Not sure about engeneered wood but my sister has had parquet floors in the kitchen for many years and nothing happened to them. The butter can be wiped off just like any other surface.

Nothing wrong with wood floors in the kitchen, a little harder to clean-up, but you can always put down a throw rug near the work areas.

Most engineered floors can not be refinished. Some can not even be screened or need extensive hand work just to renew the surface finish. I can easily tell the difference between engineered and solid when I walk on them - they don't sound right and they are a little spongy. Ask to have sleepers laid so a solid floor can be nailed to the sleepers instead of glued down. For a kitchen, a site finished floor is preferable to a pre-finished floor. The surface doesn't have nearly the nooks and crannies to hold onto -ah- food dust and fluids? In my opinion, floated wood floors are a cheap substitute for hardwood. imo, they are an expensive substitute for hardwood as you need to replace them when scratched up, any water issues and any floorplan change. You can't take new floorboard and thread them in because manufacturers quickly follow fashion.

Ha!, no teen in that gals house, I was sure I was doing things right, then, I just told her this would be the last I would do, cuz I had eliminated everything else, and she told me she was home and on the regular computer, I could have reached thru the screen and strangled her. she also commented she only knew gmail, and I told her I used FF, chrome, and IE as browsers, and then she "discovered" Ff on the machine! I felt I got suckered into a dilemma, and hope I never run across something like that again. As you said, I do not believe she knows how to operate her device, only the simplest things maybe?, and also that she doesn't know the capabilities of it either. I am not a geek, but I have done a few attachments, etc., in my life. I hope with all of this, she now can work her devices as a regular person. Linelle - aack, that was something I hadn't considered, that you might have to turn off the water before reverting to regular flow. That would bother me. I wonder how I can find out about whether the Allegro E Gourmet Prep works like that? Sometimes when you call customer service, they haven't a clue. Also, regarding the spray head size/shape, I have some arthritis and thought the bigger head would be easier to handle than the narrow "pro" spout of other faucets. Fori - thanks so much about the height testimonial. That is a relief that my options are a bit more than I thought. Maybe then I should go for the Allegro E Gourmet non-prep version? Its height is 14-3/4", while the Prep version height is 13-5/8". The reach of the non-Prep Allegro is also about an inch farther (10-3/8"). Anglophilia - I truly detest my current Rohl model's lack of a spray, and needing two handles instead of one. So, I am not keeping it for those reasons. Also, it is about 12 years old from what the Previous Owner said. That Rohl would cost $400 today which--while not cheap--isn't high enough to justify taking out upper cabinetry in order to keep it. Have you seen the Dornbrachts and the Waterstones? Now those are very expensive faucets. Nicole - I hadn't seen the Kohler Bellera. It is lovely. I will have to look at the specs.

I think a big part of the problem is that the flooring does not go with that vanity - at all. If you like the flooring, ditch the vanity for something in a grey or black tone. I don't dislike the flooring, but I hate it with that vanity. If you dislike the flooring, get rid of it. I spent a fortune on dichroic glass tile I hate on my kitchen backsplash, and wish I had torn it out and replaced it the first time I saw it installed.

sophie_blue: parquet can be any type of wood? I'm not sure.

amad: Should the floor have a certain finish to make it easier to keep up? How do you clean a wood floor?

I've never seen parquet in engeneered wood but I was referring to real wood. Wood floors are usually finished with some sort of a laquer(sp?) so that you can clean them with a damp (not wet) cloth or mop.

I'd really question that sales women.
Nothing will affect the Urethane finishes they use today on factory finished flooring. Especially butter

About the only thing that will do real harm is water. like when the sink drain UNKNOWINGLY plugs up from running the disposal and then you turn on the dish washer. Better mop it up quick or it will buckle

OK, guess what I did? I took 8 wood samples and put butter on all. Wiped it up an hour later with a simple paper towel. NO problem at all.

We're heading back toward tile though. We need color with the white cabs and black appliances. We are thinking a red/copperish color Hacienda floor. Anyone believe that tile floors are too hard? Or butter will kill them? :-)

look for an engineered wood with an aluminum oxide finish. Almost all of the newer prefinished woods have them. They are very similar to the finish on laminates except that it can be recoated many times. You never actually get to the 'wood' as your walking on the finish. Have no idea why someone would suggest solid wood. Engineered is much more stable and if you want wood its just as durable as anything else. Brazillian will change color 'darken' rather dramatically and with its smooth finish will tend to show everything, but for ease of cleaning you have a good product. I'm a former district mgr for Bruce Hardwood.

Does the finish mean I shouldn't worry about the floor hardness rating?

I would be happy with a floor that *didn't* show everything.

Would a teak end up being a better choice? Maybe I don't need to go exotic at all with a good finish.

My goals are:
- wide plank for aesthetic
- reds or yellows (like a golden (not brown) teak)
- durable enough (2 humans, 2 cats)
- just really pleasing to the eye in a room that needs color
