Try Pinetree. You have to look under the Italian vegetables to find the Tromboncino.

Fedco has both as well but you'll have to spend on shipping if you don't meet their minimum order.

You just rocked my world so hard! I don't know how I missed them at Pinetree, but I'm so happy they have them. They even have Sun Sugars, which I wanted to try also...along with $20 worth of other stuff, lol. Yay! I will have my Sungolds and Tromboncinos after all!

Another good site to try for unusual tomatoes is Sample Seeds (http://sampleseeds.com). I think she sells each packet for just $1. I ordered from her this year and the seeds are great!

I'm in the bay area too, and I always see what fellow SF'ers are doing.
Just my two cents, but I think you are late to start tomatoes from seed for this year. By time these are ready to plant out, you may not get enough heat and light to make the tomatoes. I am usually planting my seedlings now, but they are about 10 weeks old. At least.

I did have a tomato that overwintered, amazingly, but that is unusual, and not best for real fruit production.

You are good for squash, which you can seed directly in the space it will grow.

Have to agree with dgbeig. I bought a Sungold seedling from a home improvement store (HD and OSH both offer it) kind of late last year. It did exceptionally well. It fruited in a few weeks and went on until Nov/Dec. This is a good time to get tomato seedlings in.

Yeah, I know I'm really late, but I've been trying to avoid going to the local nursery to buy my Sungold seedlings because, honestly, I just hate them, lol. I haven't seen a single Sungold at HD or OSH, sadly, although I've been to both places probably 5 times each in the last month or so. The one place I'm almost positive they'll have the seedlings, I'm avoiding like the plague. The people are really rude and nasty, and when I had tomato psyllids last year, they basically told me I was crazy until I had the county extension office confirm it (and even they hadn't heard of anyone this far north having them - lucky me...).

I didn't start any of my tomatoes until the end of May last year. Transplants went in and I started seeds at the same time, and the ones I started from seed did eventually catch up, although I'm not sure what they would have done in terms of production had I started earlier.

I'll cross my fingers for a long growing season, and I'll order the seeds anyway, but I'll probably end up buying a seedling if I come across one, just so that I don't miss out on the awesomeness that is Sungold.

Be aware that there are two cultivars out there named Sungold. The original is an F1 hybrid. Sungold Select is a dehybridized version, open pollinated. Similar but not the same (this is the one Baker Creek and several others vend.)

I was wondering about that. I saw some on ebay that were labeled as being heirlooms, but I could have sworn they were F1 hybrids. I imagine the one I'm looking for is the original, but I'm not 100% positive.

How similar is the taste, or are they virtually indistinguishable from one another?

haven't tried Sungold Select but there is a Sungold Select II which is an improved version that 'better matches the hybrid'.

Bet those folks on the tomato forum have some strong opinions on this...

"Bet those folks on the tomato forum have some strong opinions on this..." LOL, I'm sure they do! I don't think any tomato has come close to the real Sungold F1. A LOT of people have tried. I think the gene pool for this tomato must be complex. It is not a simple cross as far as I can tell. Some people really like Sungold Select II so it must be good and worth growing, but I would not substitute it for the real thing.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience at the store. Our local Home Depot at Fremont has greatly improved in the recent two years. So I'm lucky to be able to shop at both HD and OSH and receive excellent service.

One variety I tried which was also very good was Sunsugar. That's also one that gave me non-stop harvest from May to Nov. OSH has the red Sunsugar now. I'm planting Juliet this year so I did not get it.

Starting tomato late in our zone definitely has its advantage this year given the unusually cool weather. Maybe your late tomato sowing will outdo all of ours in two months :-) Good luck!

If you are interested in seedlings to back up your seeds, check your local farmer's market for tomato and other vegetable seedlings. Several vendors at mine sell dozens of varieties.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the seeds last night, both Sungold and Sun Sugar, and we'll see what happens once they get here. Even with the late start, I'm hoping that since they produce so quickly, I'll get some tomatoes out of 'em.

Xanadu, my local farmer's market opens up this evening, so I'll be heading down to see if anyone has any interesting plants. Hopefully someone will have something worth buying!

spaghetina if you find yourself heading east to the foothills within the next couple weeks I think we have a couple extra sungold babies. The hybrid, I believe, bought the seeds from Territorial. Let me know!
