We installed a Miele Speedoven in 2012 and have no regrets. It is in a wall cabinet at counter height and is used all the time. It heats up very fast for baking allowing us not to use our 36" oven when not needed. It microwaves, bakes, and broils with all types of combinations of those heating choices. The drawbacks are the price and you need a 220v line to power it. The quality is excellent and have not seen another oven that can do what this does.

OMG, Carol, we had that same one until about a year ago. It had to be at least 20 years old, and it never DID actually die; it got knocked off a shelf onto a concrete floor and the door broke. LOL! The only complaint I had about it is that it didn't hold the large slices of sourdough. Looks like I need to start at Target and see if there is a Tuesday Morning nearby as well. This is an item I want to see/touch in person since controls are getting harder and harder for me to see these days. Jessy, MIL has a true countertop convection in the garage that needs fixing. It is HUGE. And she says that whatever repair it needs is pretty minor. When/if DH ever makes it out here and I'm cookingfor more than just me, I might get it fixed. And I WISH I could roast coffee in it. I've found one place in Reno that has really good coffee, but it's a royal PIA to get there and they don't ship. (It's IN a casino.) I'm drinking a LOT of tea these days because I will not drink crap coffee and you can bet Hades will freeze solid before I set foot in a Star*ucks. :) Linda - I like the cripsy bits of toasted things, and microwaved bread just doesn't do it for me. It's either get a toaster or a toaster oven, and the TO will let me butter something THEN toast it. And the thing about unplugging appliances when not in use? Always! I don't keep any small appliances that has a heating element in it plugged in all the time. Heard too many stories from firemen about lousy wiring in those bad boys.

Thanks everyone. I've done some searching today and looking for the keyword "hot". Seems like several models have complaints of them being not well insulated and hotter than the user thought it should be. The B&D I had several years ago didn't get this hot. I don't think I'll keep it. Reminds me of a space heater :o Don't need THAT in Texas 9 months of the year. I wanted to cut down on the energy and heat. Monica ps...momj, are we (THS) oldtimers or what! (lol) This is my 7th year on this site. I know you've been here at least that, right?

Thanks for the responses! These are very helpful to me. Having it sit on something placed on the counter might be a solution. In fact, this morning I realized I have an extra one or two large antique/vintage copper platters with pretty pewter handles. I think that might look great, as there will be other exposed copper pans and such in the kitchen. (By "exposed," I mean a special open, upper corner cabinet designed to house my nice copper cookware; also, utensils will be kept in several vintage copper/pewter teakettles.) I suppose I should give thought to the fact that copper conducts heat, however. As for how hot the bottom gets, I do not recall since I've been without a kitchen since February 2. I do remember the sides get smokin' hot, though, as monicakm mentions. I always assumed that meant the bottom did, too, but perhaps it doesn't. Thanks again!
