I want pine floors!

We're building a new house and I really want Heart Pine floors on the ground floor. Several people (including my builder) have said, "You'll be sorry." They say pine is too soft and will scratch, dent, gouge, etc. I have 3 young kids and I'm sure we will have our fair share of mishaps.

But I love the warm feel of heart pine, it almost glows. A dark wood is too formal for me, maple is too pale, and I don't love the grain in oak.

I can live with some "character" being added to the floors by my very active kids, unless they will be totally wrecked. I guess it come down to 2 questions that I would love some input on...

1) Do pine floors really damage that easily?

2) Is there another wood that is harder that would give me the same feel as the pine? (I've heard about Australian Cypress, but what I've seen has lots and lots of knots. Does anyone know if it comes in different grades?)

I would love to take advantage of other people's experience so that I don't make a costly mistake. All input is appreciated!!
