small pine i want to plant outside

hi. i am new to the site, and really like all the tips and stuff i've seen so far. seems like a great community to get some green advice from.

anyway, my son brought home a small pine from school. it is about 8 inches tall and is in an 8 inch pot. i have no idea what type of pine it is though. i was wondering when to plant and where. eg, full sun, shade, etc. we have sandy soil that drains fairly well. any help will be appreciated. thanks

Depends on exactly what species it is. If it is a pine, then in full sun; if it is some other conifer, not necessarily full sun. Can you post a photo?

If it is a full-size tree when mature, it'll need to be a reasonable distance away from buildings, overhead lines, etc. If a dwarf form, then that doesn't matter so much.

It'll likely need watering for the first year or two until it becomes established.

then plant it in fall ...

august is NOT quite the best time to plant...

regardless... it should be outside.. in the shade awaiting fall ... not in the house ...

Hi It is a member of the Aruaucaria family which pre date pine trees lol There are around 20 species . At one time they were the most common tree but are now limited to western pacific and s. america. They grow very well in s florida in fact to the point of being a weed. they are freeze .low humidity and drought sensitive so you will have difficulty over the long term but then you probably have no desire to get it to the 200 foot level lol?? An interesting side note to the family is they appear to have been the main diet of sauropod dinosaurs.lol Good luck with it suspect that it will decline over time but if you religiously water it and no hard freezes?? gary

It's warm enough to harden them off outside now without a greenhouse. The key thing is not to expose them to full sun for more than an hour or so the first few days. They will cook, much like people sunburn if they hit the beach for hours after no full sun exposure. Baby them, as it sounds like you have. Gradual exposure is key. These cloudy days may be a pain to us gardeners, but it's actually ideal for acclimating plants to the outdoors. There is also less transplant shock to the plants when we place them in the garden with cooler temps and not a lot of sun. Hope you have much success!

If you have a BIG tree in his yard I'd plant St. Augustine grass stolons, plugs, sod or seed underneath per mfg. directions. It needs shade so it won't spread to non-shaded areas readily in PHX climate (since you didn't indicate where in AZ you live. Good cover crop for the tree too. Dog will love rolling in it. Just let it grow tall.

And if it's a Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria Heterophylla) leave it indoors because they're tropical and suitable for growing indoors if given humidity and light.

guessing.. schools tend to give conservation district yearlings on earth day ... native to the area ... in bulk ...

up here in MI it would probably be pinus strobus ...

no clue what they would have down your way ...

if you are near the soil conservation district office.. you might be able to pop in and ask .. show them your plant ...

They used to give us bradford pears. I'd have prefered pinetrees because pinecones don't smell like dead fish.

By "pine" I wonder if you really mean conifer? One of my youngsters brought home a little tree from school on Earth Day and it was a White Spruce. We planted it and its now 18 ft high and a magnificent tree. If your tree is indeed a pine its probably a white pine as its the cheapest and thus ideal for give-aways. If so my advice would be to plant it as far away from your house as possible.

In Texas, I'd have thought more likely Loblolly Pine Pinus taeda, but until there's a pic, it's impossible to say.

Do you live in the eastern 1/3 of the state? Probably a loblolly pine seedling, assuming they have given you somthing appropriate.

If you were in the western part of the state then I would guess they gave you an afghan pine becuase they are planted all over the place in west texas. Maybe a colorado pinyon, but those are slow growing seedlings so that's probably less likely.
