Garage opener: 3 screws, 4 clicks and 5 blinks

My craftsman 1/2 hp opener (back-panel part# 41A5021-2D) has a similar problem of 5 blinks and no movement: pressing the button on the remote gives a click sound on the opener unit and 2 seconds later another click. No other sound or movement. My problem is different from many other posters in that the garage door is in the closed position. I cannot find out how the opener responds in the opened-door position, since I have been unable to operate the opener at all.

Per Don's recommendations on this forum, I played around with the up and down screws on the opener. I noticed that when the Down screw is above a certain point, the opener makes 4 clicks, and below that point the opener makes 2 clicks.

When I opened the cover of the opener unit, it looks like the up and down screws may or may not make contact with a center screw, depending on their position. The center screw and the contacts are visible only when cover is opened. The up-screw is nowhere near making contact with the center screw. But the down screw is close to makign contact with the center screw.

When I turn the down screw so that the down screw does not make contact with the center screw, and press the remote, I hear 4 clicks. When I turn the down screw in the opposite direction so that the down screw makes contact with the center screw, and press the remote, I hear 2 clicks.

I have no clue what is going on with the clicks and the 5 blinks. Help!

When the door is closed the contact for the down limit must be making with the center contact for the door to reverse. I have a feeling your logic board is bad. Have you had lightning?

Those up and down screws are not going to help your situation. The down limit ( or screw ) should be making contact the the center screw as you call it and the up should be no where near the center screw b/c the door opener is in the down position.

The 5 blinks means rpm sensor failure. In other words the motor is locked up or the trolly is stuck on something or you have a bad relay in the circuit board.

#1 Disconnect the door from the opener and see if you can open it manually. If you cannot, you have a door problem, probably a broken spring and need to have that fixed. The opener should still be making some sort of effort to lift the door though.

#2 With the door disconnected from the opener try hitting the opener button and see if anything changes.

#3 If nothing changed with the door disconnected then take off the chain and hit the wall button if the motor runs with the chain disconnected then the trolley was stuck on something. Free the trolley and hook it back up and set the limits. If the motor still just clicks then it is locked up or you have a bad relay in the circuit board and the circuit board needs replaced. Unfortunately I don't have a sure fire way to test and see which one it is ( maybe Don does ) but, I will tell you I have saw the relay go bad more often than I have saw the motor being locked up.

We need to buy two new openers for our wood doors. One door is large- for a two car area & the smaller door would house one car. We hardly use the second door, it's just for storage, anyway. In our remodel both have broken. The large one was on it's last legs anyway so our contractor sent a guy out to check it out. His idea was that both doors need new springs (no big deal) new brackets and hinges and door buttons. I asked for weatherstripping on the bottom of the doors as well. The contractor's guy spec'd two Genie units (no model numbers) but I believe are both belt drives as quietness was discussed. The bid was $2500+!!! I called in a guy who my neighbor had used about 4 years ago. He put a Stealth in her same large garage door for $500 at the time. He came today and recomended a Liftmaster belt drive instead of the Genie recomended realignment and hinges etc and all told his price was $1800. You can guess what I'm going to tell our contractor. I don't have the quote yet (he's faxing it today or tomorrow)but is a Liftmaster better than the Genie Stealth? Not sure of the horsepower either is spec'ing. Input please!

When your opener quit working was the door in the open position? Does the small LED blink 5 times then pause and repeat? It is located next to all those white wires. If so your trolley is probably jammed against the bolt just in front of the opener. Remove the bolt and run the door until it closes. Then using a small screwdriver turn the 'up limit' control about 4 turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. The 'up limit' is located on the side of the opener. Let us know.

Lightning does the darndest things. I would check the logic board for burnt or missing traces on the P.C. board. If there aren't any obvious causes I would opt for a new opener.

I figured it out. Problem with adjusting the limit switches was due to a missing pin on a gear that is on the main motor shaft that turns another gear that moves a plastic screw that hits the up and down limit switches. In other words, the internal up/down limit switches were not getting consistant feedback of the garage door position. Nothing that a twisty tie from a garbage bag couldn't fix. So that problem was fixed. The garage door now moves and it now moves up and down without whacking the header going down and the stop limit bolt (protecting the GDO motor unit) on the way up. I knew I was wasting time when the manual says a single rotation on either screw would result in a 2 inch travel change. and nothing I did was consistant. It either hit the bolt or header or it would just HUM and not do anything. I think the original problem of why the belt's tention spring/bolt came undone was due to excessive vibration due to non-sufficient belt tension. As soon as i got the garage door operational, I noticed it was hecka jerky initially going up or initially going down. Mid-travel was smoother. By tightening the nut (collapsing the tension spring) to the 1.25 inches specified in the owners manual seemed to make the garage door much smoother. When I have the time, I'll adjust the force screws down. I think I have them maxxed out right now. I'll also test the safety/reversing feature. For now, it open and closes smoothly. I'm happy. So, while the owners manual didn't tell me to open the thing up, common sense told me to. Also, this unit has a diagnostic feature. When you press the LEARN button, it will light up the diagnostic light and blink. 5 blinks told me the motor was overheated or the RPM sensor wasn't happy. No mention of what the RPM sensor was. I'm assuming something was stuck. Anyways, adjusting the limit switches got it moving and once I cracked open the motor housing case and saw the limit switches in action and saw how misaligned they were, it was a pretty easy fix. Glad I disconnected the door so I could cycle the belt for testing without crashing the door. that made way too much noise at 10PM tonight. Once again, thanks for your help and I hope something in this helps someone.

Don: I have been out of town for 3 weeks, and just got back. I wouldn't be surprised if there was lightning - friends were saying there were a couple of heavy rains.

Doorguy: When I disconnect the door from the opener, I can manually open the door. The opener behaves the same irrespective of the door being connected or not.
Next, I will try disconnecting the chain from the trolley.

I was also thinking if I should connect the non-working board with my other (working) garage opener. The only hesitation is that the non-working back-panel part number is 41A5021-2D, whereas the part# on working one is 41A5021-2C. Any problem if I swap them for testing?

Yes. Board was the problem. When I replaced the board of the non-working opener with the board from the working opener, problem was solved.
