Does anyone have pics of their natural hickory HW?

We are doing natural hickory throughout our hallway, lr, den, dining, and kitchen. I'm excited and would love to see pics of anyone who has this. I think we are going to go w/kitchen cabinets that match the darker portions of the grain in the hickory. I was worried at first about it being such a "busy" floor but it is just so beautiful. I decorate very simply w/out a lot of print or bold colors...so, I think I can have floors that are a little more busy and pull it off.

I have to tell you, after months and MONTHS of searching, we finally installed Kentwood Natural Hickory Pecan engineered hardwood flooring, and it is quite stunning. I too was worried about having a "busy" floor, especially with our knotty pine trim and cabinetry, but IMO, it complemented the other woods in our home. It is installed in our LR, DR, FR and hallway. It has a marbled grain, and every plank is like a miniature work of art. Added bonus: It wears like IRON - much harder than oak.

There is much shading variation (mostly cream/gold/brown tones), as you would expect in this wood species. I will warn you that some of the planks that came out of the box had a pinkish hue we did not care for. We simply did not use these planks, or installed them where they would not be seen, i.e., hall closet.

I will try to dig up a pic and post it. Photos do not do it justice, however. I remember seeing interior pictures of homes for sale with this type of flooring and thinking, "Eew - what's with that floor?" but when you see it "in person," it is beautiful. Not for everyone maybe, but we didn't want what everyone else had.

Sorry to be so long-winded. I know you are really after pics, not opinions, but I know the angst I went through choosing a floor (big investment you'll have to live with for a long time), so I thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth.

I had saved this pic because hickory natural was on our short list of flooring that we were considering. It was a tough decision between oak, hickory & amendoim. We eventually decided on red oak natural.

I share in your excitement! Wood flooring looks and feels so wonderful. You will love it : )

I am surprised that no one else has found that the alder cabinets are better on the budget than other wood species. Could this be a regional phenomenon? When I was first pricing cabinets, I found across several different cabinet lines that there was a 15-25% savings when using alder instead of cherry and approximately a 10% savings over maple. We were only pricing all-plywood construction so that may have influenced the price differentials somewhat. These prices were not for knotty alder but the regular alder. BTW, all of the cabinets above look beautiful! And, for the OP- $8K is not a lot to outfit the entire house in cabinetry...it goes fast!!! It sounds as if you rec'd a prelim bid from HD, so maybe you'll end up okay. But, add in any crown molding, rope molding, corbels, light rails, bump outs, better constructed boxes/doors, etc., and you'll be sunk....

I love my floor in my family room. It's Mannington- Heritage Hickory, engineered floor. It comes in several shades. The color we chose is Topaz. I don't have a picture of my family room, but I have a link with a picture of the floor. Not sure what you have going on there, but I sell about three hundred leather pieces a year and never come across peeling like that. Usually there are only two things that can cause that. 1 ) Something was applied to the leather that caused a severe chemical reaction and the topcoat is stripping off 2 ) This is common to see on bi-cast or bonded leather. Let's explore what bonded / bi cast "leather" actually is: When leather upholstery is produced at an upholstery maker they save the hide salvage. Appx 1/3 of the hide is scrap on a build ue to wrinkles, scars, marking, or being on the edges. If they can. they make swatch samples out of the remnants. Otherwise, they all go in the "Bins" which are in the cutting room of factories. Here's a set of "Bins" at Hancock and Moore's factory in Taylorsville NC. These are sold to a company that goes around to all the leather upholstery makers in an area and bins are picked up every two weeks or so. They are then put into a container and shipped to China for processing. Once they arrive at their destination, they are chemically melted into a leather slurry and bonded to a polypropylene sheet, then embossed with a grain pattern, painted and topcoated. These are then sold as either bonder or bicast leather. There is no benefit of real leather any more as the cellulose structure genuine top grain leather has been destroyed in the melt process. Bonded and Bicast leathers don't have much longevity and tend to "Strip" away like you are seeing in your photos. Neiman Marcus is a reputable company, I would suggest you start by contacting the Store Manager in person if possible. If these units are only two years old they should go to bat for you, they are the selling agent and have a duty to respond and interact with the manufacturer on your behalf. Find out what you really have for a cover and then what they will do for you. As long as you did not' apply something to the units that would cause that, they should take care of in some form or manner. Good luck

The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and wear. It measures the force required to embed an 11.28 mm (0.444 in) steel ball into wood to half the ball's diameter. This method leaves an indentation. A common use of Janka hardness ratings is to determine whether a species is suitable for use as flooring. It should be noted that the test is meant to be used only for "unfinished, open grain flooring" manufactured before the 1990s. With the advent of pre-finished flooring in which hardwood floors are treated with aluminum-oxide based sealers that often double or triple the dent and scratch resistance of the flooring, the Janka Hardness test has been essentially rendered useless in modern-day hardwood flooring, unless the end user is purchasing unfinished or oil coated flooring. Yes, i have it. Love it. Didn't know it was going to be soooo busy, but it is funny, when we first got it, I would pick out my favorite boards, and they were some of the most simple, now that I have had it a year, I find I really like the more complex boards. It is just beautiful- the pictures don't do it justice. We have two big dogs, and it is very good at disquising dog hair, otherwise i would be sweeping 5 times a day.

Does anybody know if those are 5" planks? We're trying to decide between 5" and 3.25"... has anybody had any moisture or buckling problems with this flooring?

yes, they are 5" planks. They are also thick - 3/4". We have had it for about a year and a half, and haven't had any moisture or buckling problems. I will say that the do seem to be getting a little more of a golden color, mostly noticible on the lighter boards.
