Does anyone have a good recipe for Coq au Vin that is good without bacon? I mentioned making this when I invited some friends over for this Saturday. Their eyes lit up.
I just now got to thinking about the bacon that is in Julia's recipe. One friend that is coming does not do pork. Any suggestions?
I also could use some dessert ideas to go with. All I can think of is Crepes Suzette...
Maybe add portobello mushrooms for a deeper flavor that the bacon would have provided, but do everything else the same. It will still be really good, just not traditional.
I agree, there's enough flavor in coq au vin to carry the dish without the bacon, although everything IS better with bacon.
Have fun, Nancy, what else are you serving? An apple galette might be nice, depending on your other dishes. Of course, I'd go for chocolate. Maybe a sacher torte?
I stopped eating pork and I switched to turkey bacon.
I just made her beef bourguignon last weekend and used the turkey bacon instead of regular. Don't see why you can't use it in this dish as well. Altho I really don't think you'd miss it if you left it out. The wine is what imparts the most flavor to both dishes.
Dontcha miss Julia?! She taught me to cook and I'll always be sentimental when it comes to her techniques and recipes.
