Advice needed on which Bona waterborne finish for kitchen remodel

Our kitchen remodel is about four to six weeks off and I'm seeking advice on our kitchen hardwood floors.

The entire house of white oak was re-finished years ago: sanded down, stain applied, Bona Pacific Strong Waterborne Poly Finish layers applied. Regrettably the floors did not withstand normal family traffic well at all (long story).

With the current kitchen remodel, Bruce oak hardwood (left from previous owners) will be placed in any gaps left from appliance and cabinet removal. It's in great shape and tongue and groove. A professional floor refinisher will be performing all the work on the kitchen floors.

My floor question in general is: after screening of the Bona Pacific Strong finish, should Bona Traffic be used? I've been told waterborne poly finish once means waterborne poly forever, unless thousands of square hardwood floor footage is totally redone again which is not going to happen.

I just want to re-do the kitchen floors and do them correctly so the finish lasts a much longer time. I believe that means a Bona Finish similar to the waterborne poly Pacific Strong used the first time. We need consistency from to adjacent rooms. Just the finish is being re-placed as the stain is fine: warm and nice. Is Bona Traffic the same sheen as Bona Pacific Strong? I take it we have the least sheen ever seen on any Bona-finished floors, or the finish just got totally absorbed into the hard wood. This time I know a sealer will be put down before the new Bona product, but which Bona waterborne poly finish to choose this time?

Thank you for your advice. Yes, our new floor refinisher will weigh in mightily here. I also will call Bona tech support soon also to ask which Bona product they advise under these circumstances and I'm hoping one of their regional representatives will come out and give a consultation.

You really do need a professional consultation and guidance. Whether sealer is done or not hinges on what you intend on doing this time around. Whatever you do...do not use Pacific Strong or any other inferior choice.

Traffic now is available in three gloss levels...gloss, semigloss and commercial satin (matte). Traffic HD also is available in a "commercial extra matte" gloss level. Your refinisher ought to be able to guide you in choosing a gloss level that will blend with the rest of your flooring.

Yes, I never knew Bona Pacific Strong was inferior sadly.

I will ask two high volume pro-floor companies to come and look and recommend this time. I guess I'll have to stay with Bona finish since it's every where and I'm thinking Traffic (which should have been used the first time).

This time we're going to have to do it room to room or two to three at a time, not the entire house emptied as first time. This means the Bona finish must be mass produced and QA be the same each time no matter which sheen level.

I'm going to call Bona Products. They know I've struggled with the finish result of their Pacific Strong.

An Advantium has a hard time with a full sized chicken. It can do a small "spring" type chicken, but the larger roasting chickens won't fit. It would die in fright if you showed it a 1/4 turkey. It is in no way a substitute for a real oven. You won't be doing a meatloaf in there, because of the amount of smoke and the heavy cleanup required. You won't be doing cakes or baking either. A pan of brownies, or couple of frozen biscuits, sure. But no real baking. If you need those tasks to be done, then a countertop convection oven is your choice for that. And, it won't fit a turkey. A wall oven of any kind cannot be positioned over a cooktop. Period. Stop. Go directly to jail after your home burns down! You can have a Over The Range MicrowWave (OTR MW) over a cooktop, as long as it has the proper clearances. It is designed (and certified by UL) to be able to handle the heat of the cooktop. The Advantium comes in such a configuration and I own one---mounted under a regular cabinet because it's fan isn't remotely adequate or quiet. If you decide it has a usable capacity for it's trouble and you can modify the cabinetry for it's needed clearances, it is a possibiity for you to get you through until a real remodel can be in the works. You are getting some dangerous and incorrect advice regarding the electrical in your home. If you do choose a 220 Advantium version, you cannot "split" the current 220 that serves your range module. It will have to be an all new 4 wire (NOT 3 wire) circuit from your electrical box to the spot where you want to add the oven. Even if you go with a 110 version, you will need an all new dedicated 110 outlet. It cannot be on the same circuit as anything else. You cannot run wire by just laying it across upper cabinets! That's highly dangerous! All wire has to be behind walls or in an approved protective conduit. No lines can be "extended" unless in proper accessible junction boxes. And you cannot extend a current 220 line at all because the NEC has changed and 4 wire circuits are now required instead of the old 3 wire ones. It's lucky that you have an electrician in the family, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't still make sure he is licensed and insured for your own sake. And he should also pull the proper permits to work on the home. That can come back to bite you big time down the road. Um, and I have to say that there isn't a single contractor on the face of the earth that can redo a kitchen in 3 days. Even with working teams around the clock and having all kinds of production interns at their beck and call, they can't even do that on a HGTV show. It's unrealistic. And worse, it's dangerous. Any contractor that can tell you this with a straight face, even if they are family, is telling you a big fat lie. The rewiring and drywall work alone will take over a week to accomplish! And you are dealing with some issues that are going to need a lot of creative soutions. I'd expect your reno to take at least 3 months if not a year---because family is involved. That usually slows things down rather than speeds them up because your work is always on the back burner to them taking other jobs. You can have a quality job. You can have a cheap job. You can have a fast job. Pick two. You cannot have all three.

So after following along and reading and reading all the good advice and then OP's responses I did myself wonder a couple times (with a few head slaps really????) - are you reading AND THINKING about the advice posted or just posting more "I am totally out of control help me right now" questions that seemed to not take into consideration any of the advice. It was more I have to have 10', I have to have it large, I have to have it.....HELP regardless of the solutions posted. I kind of started to wonder if you are a college student in design school trying to get someone to draw up a kicking design for your homework assignment and it was the 11th hour. But I am no design expert just a learner myself. If nothing else there are some good designs in this thread with lots of elements that many would enjoy (well maybe not the topiary IN the kitchen). Your request for help is quite broad and without a lot of specifics. That makes it hard to answer. I'd suggest breaking it down for yourself and for us like this: 1) Before you start choosing finishes, you'll want to solidify your kitchen and likely furniture layout/orientation. You'll get the most help with that if you post a current floor plan of this entire floor drawn to scale with measurements noted on. Your architect might already have a floor plan you can share here, or you could make one with a tape measure and some graph paper. Generally a 1 square = 1 foot or 1 square = 6 inches is a good, usable scale. Please indicate on the plan which sections of which walls are coming down and any other features (good/bad views out certain windows, fireplace, ducting that can't be moved, etc.). Also note anything you'd particularly like to achieve layout-wise (e.g., an island, a view from the island to the TV, etc.). Post that and and people will have enough information to make helpful suggestions. 2) While you're fielding suggestions about your layout, sift through Houzz and Pinterest to find some inspiration pictures you like. Look for rooms that really sing to you and have the kind of appearance or feel you really enjoy in a home and want to achieve here. Once you have found, say, six or more pictures like that, post all of them together on here and ask people to help you review the images and figure out what the commonalities between the pictures are. This will help you identify what specific things you really respond to so you can include those deliberately in your new spaces. 3) After you can articulate what it is your really like and want to bring to this space, THEN repost this question about colors choices and finishes with that information. Provide your final floor plan (the result of #1), explain what specific finishes you like or what you're specifically trying to achieve through finishes (the result of #2), and then ask us how we'd achieve those stylistic preferences in this space that you have planned. You'll get MUCH more targeted, helpful help. Only then will people understand your taste and the space that we've got to work with. THEN they can say helpful things like, "You might like X paint on Y surface with Q backsplash, plus maybe G feature on M wall? That takes advantage of your space for K reasons while adhering to your taste." Also, some side notes: a) I think you'll have an easier time balancing the dining set with styles you prefer if you break up the set across several different rooms. Use the table in the office, the chairs in the dining room, and the hutch in the kitchen or whatever. With all three - the hutch, table, and chairs - together in the dining room (and being the only furniture in that room), the country note you don't seem to be a fan of will inevitably dominate that room. b) I disagree with Sophie that it makes sense to hire an interior designer at this time. When you bring in a professional, you want to have some idea of what you're asking them for. Something you want them to help you achieve. I don't think you have that yet, and free discussion here is a good way to pin down your own thoughts a bit more. c) I don't think whoever said this looked like an inexpensive house meant it in a denigrating way. You mentioned several very large ticket items (kitchen reno and opening up two separate stories of your house), and I think she/he was simply trying to make sure you're not putting more into the house than you can get back when you sell. That can be devastating. But in case that made you feel weird about having posted, rest assured that people post on here with every single kind of house. Is this the grandest house we've ever seen? No. Is it the humblest? Also no. But no one cares. We're all just here because we like improving homes. The starting point really doesn't matter.

Little update - after talking this over with DH and consulting a stucco guy, we are leaning away from plans that involve moving doors or windows in ways that would require patching of the stucco. Making a patch blend in will be difficult (our stucco is natural and we don't want to paint it), and overall it seems like it will probably be more expensive than it's worth. However, the window on the back could be eliminated without stucco repair because it is under a portico (where I believe the original back door was) and the entire portico area is trimmed in wood. We could easily seal that off and use the area on the exterior for floating shelves, etc., plus it gives me a lot more options inside. We'd lose light, but that's easy to remedy by expanding the current door to a slider and/or expanding the side window. Here are two new ideas with all of that in mind: Island plan (we'd lose the back window, but DH prefers this, as he likes to sit at the island and chat with me while I cook): Galley-esque plan (keeps the back window and I like the separation of mudroom/laundry and kitchen here, but not sure I want to eliminate the possibility of kitchen seating):

Pacific Strong is 'inferior' when compared with other finish products in the Bona line. I am sure some customers have been very happy with the choice.

I doubt that glennsfc. That's why Pacific Strong was pulled by Bona and replaced by Bona Waterborne Traffic. Shame on me for not doing my own research into Bona finishes at the contract time, as Traffic was available. Might have been inadequate drying times that contributed to the mess of a job.

Do your own research hard wood floor lovers!

Bona did not replace Pacific Strong with Traffic, if my memory is correct. Pacific Strong was non-yellowing while Traffic is not. I think they were both in the product line at the same time. Saying that is like saying GM replaced the Corvette with the Fiero.
If anything, the replacement for Pacific Strong in the US is Novia. Between the Novia and Traffic is Bona Mega. You can add Mega booster (aziridine) to Mega and get near Traffic performance for less money. Pacific Strong was much less costly than Traffic, and maintained properly, could provide a suitable floor finish.
If you're looking for better durability at a lower price, you can apply oil-modified polyurethane over your water-borne finish as long as it's cured completely.
Personally I think Traffic is overpriced but if you need a durable finish that dries fast and has low odor it's one of the best water based finishes you can use.

What do you think of Street Shoe waterborne products, JFCWood? Screen, seal, finish. Less costly than Traffic. Gloss sheen.

Hi, I haven't used Street Shoe but I know some contractors around here have used it on restaurant floors and been happy with it.
If you're looking for gloss you must be prepared to recoat it more often regardless of what finish you choose. I would still opt for semi-gloss oil-modified polyurethane if it was feasible. I have it right in my store entry and while it does show scratches and indentations, it has worn very well.

Update: JFCWood, if you see this, my husband wishes a full polyurethane floor finish, as he's tired of the waterborne products and hassle. You said: "I would still opt for semi-gloss oil-modified polyurethane if it was feasible."

-Would you give me two well known manufacture choices of an oil-modified polyurethane finish?

-May we still screen the current Bona poly waterborne finish and then apply a semi-gloss oil-modified polyurethane finish? My husband prefers such for durability, and we would gradually re-work our way through the rooms starting with the kitchen remodel.

Thank you for any advice on this.
