Cleaning floor that was previously waxed..plan to have refinished

I have original oak floors in my late 60s home. There was carpet in most of the house. The bedrooms had been poly'd pretty recently before the carpet was put down. The common areas appear to have been waxed. The finish looked ok for a while but where there are area rugs I can obviously tell that the finish on the exposed areas is wearing off.

I plan to have the previously waxed areas refinished in the next year or so.

What would be the best thing to do to the floors in the meantime? We don't mind the look too much right now. I'm more concerned about cleaning products and NOT messing them up.

Thanks for any input or additional questions.
