Pies VS Cakes

Which do you make more often - pies or cakes? Which do you prefer to eat? This question was inspired by the birthday cake thread.

I used to think I prefered cakes, but I find that I make pies more often and enjoy them more. From what I can tell, cheesecakes and tarts are considered pies - a cake must be something that rises when you bake it, and pies have a bottom or top crust or both. I made a lot of coffee cakes when I was a pastry chef, but that was because the restaurant served them mostly in the morning and afternoon to have with coffee. When I'm having "high tea", I tend to serve cake instead of pie, and I'm not sure why - possibly because I don't like crumpets.

Pies appear to be more popular than cakes in the U.S., but I think cakes are popular because they go further than pies. I liked making cakes when I was a child because I liked to decorate them. I think I see more cakes than pies in bakeries, but I have not done a count. Turnovers are very popular in Mexico, and in some parts they are called fruit empanadas.
