Best Internet Filter?

Please help. I need to install an internet filter on my computer and my son's computer. I'm not sure which one to install. There are free ones that I can download and ones I can purchase and I am getting more confused the more I read about them. Any recommendations?

Joanie, the term filter is very vague and can mean a lot of things. If you're talking about a fire wall Alarmzone.com is one of the better free firewalls available.

If you clarify what you need more, I can ask my husband, he's and IT guy and will probably be able to suggest something.

For that price, I think I'd be tempted to go to an upholstery shop and check out their foam selection. Sharp knife and.... Maybe it would at least work for a "temporary" filter while you washed out the old one? Probably not "flame resistant" in case of back fire or whatever specs they are supposed to pass, but maybe....

We used Faucet Direct for last year's bathroom renovation and our current one. They were great and matched other sites prices. I did order a toilet that took weeks to arrive...and then was cancelled because it wasn't available anymore (Toto Vespin). They replaced it with another Toto toilet at their cost (or so they told me...I never checked). But they were very pleasant and delivery was quick.

I found that the best way to filter what my kids did on the computer was to keep the computer in the family room. Everyone was always in there watching TV or reading. That made it kind of hard to go to forbidden web sites. You'll find, as your kids get older, that the filter will probably prevent them (and you) from doing legitmate research or even browsing or shopping, since those programs don't have fuzzy logic. They can't discern the difference between the National Geographic and a XXX web site. Don't forget the password or you'll forever be locked out of the internet.

Now then. Generally? Don't try to garden under a tree. Regardless of the actual (very deep) depth of the tree roots, it's more than that. The tree sucks up all the water it can in the soil under most circumstances. It's almost impossible to keep stuff watered appropriately, so unless you have things that can tolerate shady, very dry conditions, it's tough. Around here, there are about three things I can think of that will do that. If you can get past that, the tree will also happily remove just about every bit of food you can possibly toss at the plants. Anything I've ever planted has been stunted and weak. What have I managed? Crocuses--they blossom before the tree is back and the greenery has time to recharge the bulbs. Any other very early spring bulb works well too, like snow drop, Glory of Snow, and so on. Spread is notably slow, however. Some early-mid spring bulbs do fine, too, like daffodil and hyacinth. They're up and blooming and recharging before the leaves are fully in, and will simply keep their leaves later to compensate for the shadier conditions later on. The bulbs seem to do fine, however, and I have an ever-spreading patch of jonquils under one large tree. Some summer plants have done OK for me, like Melampodium, which is very drought-tolerant once established. But I did have to water a lot until it established.

Joanie, I have used this one www.opendns.com and it works well. It is used by many schools to control their internet. You block access through your router, so all computers on the network will be covered.

We have a Linksys router providing internet access for X-box and playstation 3 online gaming as well as Ipods, phones, and 2 computers. I'm wondering if I need to install software for the 2 computers as well as something for the router, or perhaps that's overkill.

If you put in on the router it will cover all hardwired computers and any wireless devices that go through that router. Set it up first without blocking anything and don't tell anyone. Sit back and observe what is being accessed. Isn't it fun having teens! The only problem is that it tracks sites through the router and not through individual computers, so if you have a couple of kids, you won't be able to tell who accessed it, just that it was accessed. Once you set up the blocks, the kids will see a page that tells them that opendns blocked access to "ABC" site or category of sites.

That sounds perfect Chispa. And I don't need to find out who accessed the info, I know exactly who. So it sounds like I don't need software for the computers as well, just the opendns? Thank you tons

Yes, just the opendns. They have instructions on their site and a forum and tech support for any questions/issues. Just make sure you have passwords on your router, etc that won't be guessed/hacked by your teens!

My only concern is that while teen would be safe with laptop at home and likely collge campus, probably not with another location with wi-fi. I may put software on his but I don't want to slow it down performance wise. Any thoughts? Thank you so much for your help.

the router should be able to report the MAC address of the specific computer that's requesting an internet site
